  • Patent number: 8549967
Abstract: A scoring or cutting assembly forms a part of a cutting die used to score and cut corrugated board. The scoring or cutting assembly includes a cutting or scoring rule secured to a die board. First and second elastomers are secured on the die board such that the scoring or cutting rule extends between the elastomers and there is defined a space between the scoring or cutting rule in each of the elastomers. There is also provided a pair of retainers, each retainer being secured to the die board adjacent an outboard side of the elastomers. During a cutting or scoring operation, the elastomers engage the corrugated board on opposite sides of the scoring or cutting rule and apply and inward force to the corrugated board towards the scoring or cutting rule. This causes the corrugated board to resist cracking on opposite sides of the scoring or cutting rule.

  • Patent number: 7111534
Abstract: The present invention entails a rotary cutting die having one or more scrap strippers secured thereon for stripping scrap corrugated board pieces from adjacently disposed scrap cutting blades during a corrugated board die cutting operation. Each scrap stripper comprises a resilient member having a base and an angled flexible finger extending from the base so as to define an open area between the angled finger and the base. During a die cutting operation, the entire scrap stripper including the angled finger and base is compressed as the stripper passes through the nip defined between the cutting die and an associated anvil. As the stripper exits the nip, it expands causing the underlying scrap piece to be stripped from adjacently disposed blades. In addition, the angled finger extending from the base extends outwardly and engages the underlying cut piece of scrap and pushes or urges the cut scrap against the underlying anvil.

  • Patent number: 4522095
Abstract: A punch for a cutting die is provided for forming holes in corrugated board or the like. The hole punch includes a tubular metal member of circular transverse cross section having one end substantially flush with the back surface of a die plate in which it is mounted and the other end extending beyond the front surface of the die plate and terminating in a circular cutting edge. A body of resilient material, preferably molded rubber, is located within the cylindrical member and has one end terminating near the back end of the tubular member and another end terminating near the cutting edge of the tubular member. The purpose of the body is to eject and strip the scrap of corrugated board from the punch and from the rest of the blank being formed by the cutting die. The resilient body has a central, cylindrical recess at one end which enables the resilient material to be deformed inwardly when engaging a corrugated board being cut by the circular cutting edge.

  • Patent number: 4499802
Abstract: A cutting die is provided with scrap ejection provisions for removing scrap from the die. The ejection provisions are particularly effective for ejecting elongate scrap from elongate openings such as slots which are formed in carton blanks and the like, the blanks being produced from sheet material, such as corrugated board. The ejection system includes resilient ejection member located between two parallel cutting rules, which members eject or push out the scrap from between the rules in an asymmetrical manner, exerting more force along one edge of the scrap than the other. This causes the scrap to twist and be more easily ejected. An additional ejection member is located outside one of the cutting rules to cause a portion of the blank to deflect to further aid in the scrap ejection.

  • Patent number: 4466319
Abstract: A rotary cutter for a printing press directs a web between a knife cylinder and an opposed anvil cylinder. The outer surface of the knife cylinder mounts one or more knife blade assemblies each having a sandwich construction. Each assembly includes at least one and usually two blades separated by a spacer bar. The assembly also includes a perforator blade and an ejector bar located on opposite sides of the spacer bar and set in recesses formed on the sides of the spacer bar. The perforator blade has laterally spaced sets of chisel-like teeth that impale trim pieces cut by the blades. The ejector bar reciprocates radially within the assembly to remove the trim piece from the teeth. The assembly is held together by two sets of bolts that allow the location of the blades to be set independently. A set of half rings each carrying radially projecting locating dowels are nested in circumferential grooves formed in the knife cylinder. Each ring is aligned against locating pins mounted in the knife cylinder.

Abstract: A cutting device for cutting threads into predetermined lengths. The device has a first rotatable smooth faced drum and a second rotatable blade bearing drum having a plurality of radially extending circumferentially spaced cutting blades on the outer periphery thereof. Centrifugal force responsive means comprising fins connected to a deformable ring are positioned between the blades and on rotation of the drums act to press a thread onto the smooth faced drum. The blades are connected to the blade bearing drum only at their ends.

Abstract: Stripping apparatus to remove scrap around die cut blanks in a web comprises a roll pair through which the web is passed, one roll carrying spikes to impale the scrap pieces and the other roll carrying abutments to contact the scrap pieces on the opposite side to the spikes. According to the invention the abutments are retractable, so that effectively the scrap piece is pinched between the spike and abutment shortly before the nip of the rolls. FIG. 1 illustrates the preferred arrangement.

The apparatus employs a rotatable drum equipped with a large number of radially disposed cutting blades, the drum cooperates with a supporting device for supporting the strand as it is cut. Ejector bars are maintained in position on the drum between adjacent cutting blades by elastic mounting members that receive the ends of the ejector bars. The elastic mounting members cause the ejector bars to compress the strand against the support drum as the strand is being cut and, in conjunction with centrifugal force arising from rotation of the drum, to eject the cut pieces of strand from the cutting drum.
