  • Patent number: 6227088
Abstract: An apparatus for the opening of paper bobbins and other rolls of material is provided. A flat blade is advanced from the side of a wound roll of material such that it intersects the roll over substantially its entire width. A cutting blade or other cutting mechanism then severs the layers of the roll which are outside the flat blade, and the flat blade protects the inside layers from being damaged. In preferred embodiments, a jet of air or other gas may be used to ease the insertion of the flat blade, or a gripping device which pinches the surface of the roll between opposed friction pads creates an arch in the surface of the roll through which the blade is inserted. The device is particularly suitable for use in cigarette making machines which require undamaged paper feeds.

  • Patent number: 6176164
Abstract: A process for the compression cutting of foam which uses a moving table which supports a template over which a foam block to be cut is placed. The foam block and template are moved under an angled moving belt compressed and passed against a moving blade. The improvement of the present invention includes the step of placing a second foam block above the foam block to be cut and passing both the foam block to be cut and the second block under the moving belt and cutting only the foam block to be cut. Next, the second foam block is removed and placed on top of the template and becomes a foam block to be cut and a new second foam block is placed over the block to be cut and the process is repeated. The template has a flat base with removable form members affixed to its upper surface. Then, when the template becomes worn, a new base board and sidewall can easily be formed and the removable form members removed from the worn form and placed on the upper surface of the base of the replacement template.

  • Patent number: 6142053
Abstract: A method for shaping a slab of compressible or cellular polymer material, such as polyurethane foam, by cutting portions of the material from one surface uses a compression roller, a support surface, a blade and a moving patterned platform interposed between the compression roller and the support surface. The moving patterned platform, preferably an endless belt or a series of interconnected panels, defines at least one recess, and may define a pattern of recesses of complex or simple shapes and at various depths. When the slab of cellular polymer material is compressed between the compression roller and the support surface, a portion of the material fills the recess or recesses in the moving patterned belt. At least a portion of the compressed material within the recesses is then cut from the surface of the slab by the blade just as the slab emerges from between the compression roller and the support surface.

  • Patent number: 5211525
Abstract: Packs formed from a group of sacks bound by straps for feeding to so-called sack applicators are conveyed continuously in succession by a particular arrangement of endless driven belts, comprising a belt acting on the lower central part of the pack and a central upper belt and two lateral belts or shoes acting on the upper side parts of the pack to result in transverse arching of the pack and the insertion of a fixed reference member between the pack and strap to bring the strap into contact with a rotary cutter for its cutting. The hanging cut part of the strap is led between cooperating inclined rollers which remove the strap.

  • Patent number: 5211091
Abstract: An apparatus for cutting pleated paper, and especially for filtration media for the automotive industry. Two tooth roller chains in parallel are supported above a support plate upon which pleated paper is placed. There is an opening in the plate through which the teeth of two sprockets supported beneath the plate may extend to mesh with the teeth of the corresponding roller chain. The teeth on both the chain and the sprocket are the same height as the pleated paper and when driven by an electric motor pulls the paper through the device separating each pleat. One pleat at a time is pushed through a slit in the table top at which point the pleat knuckle is sheared off by pneumatic operated cutter blade. A fiberoptics infrared scanner is used to monitor the amount of pleated material available. The number of pleats cut on any one run is controlled.

  • Patent number: 5174180
Abstract: A method and apparatus for edge sharpening a strip that provides a doctor blade or a squeegee blade (e.g. for use in screen printing), wherein a rotary cutting blade cuts through the strip between the opposite major faces of the strip, and at fixed angles to said major faces, while the strip is move longitudinally relative to the rotary cutting blade. The apparatus, which constitutes a strip blade edge sharpening machine, comprises a rotary cutting blade, a support structure to support the strip in upright attitude upon a minor face of the strip, and a mechanism to effect relative movement between the rotary cutting blade and the strip in a direction longitudinally of the strip such that the rotary cutting blade cuts through the strip between the opposite major faces of the strip, and at fixed angles to said major faces, at a location spaced by a predetermined constant distance from the strip's supported minor face.

  • Patent number: 5163216
Abstract: A roller conveyor supports a bale at a cutting and removing station. Side compactors and a top compactor compress the bale slightly for positioning it. The bale is pushed against a wire cutting channel in which a blade having a surface that protrudes into and forms a groove in the bottom surface of the bale is passed diagonally across the bale, with the wires springing into a recess in the blade. The blade continues to move, pulling the wire against the back wall of the recess until the wire exceeds its tensile strength and breaks. The bale is then lifted on pins so that a wire pulling blade can be moved also diagonally across the top of the bale. The pulling blade also has a forwardly inclined surface that pushes the bale down while allowing the wires to be captured in a recess in the blade. The blade is moved across the bale, capturing all of the wires and removing them from the bale. Another embodiment uses a turner to rotate the bale to cut and remove wires from adjacent sides of the bale.

  • Patent number: 5155889
Abstract: The invention relates to an apparatus for the formation of an insulating material ply, e.g. in the manufacture of insulating chutes. The object is to provide a continuous insulating material ply (17) of a predetermined thickness. A primary ply (14) of surplus thickness is first sawn out of an insulating material roll (1) by rotating the insulating wool roll against the edge of a band saw, and this primary ply (14) is fed to another ply-cutting saw (16) which saws the primary ply into the final ply (17) with the predetermined thickness. The surplus from the primary ply (14) is collected on a drum (19) provided in connection with the ply-cutting saw (16) to form an intermediate storage. When the insulating material (roll) run out, the sawing of the final ply (17) is continued from the intermediate storage without interruption until the leading edge of a new opened insulating material roll (1) reaches the ply-cutting saw (16).

  • Patent number: 5129295
Abstract: A method of cutting stacked layers of compressible material utilizing a steel rule cutting die. An open cell foam member is placed in the area between spaced portions of the cutting die to define a flat upper surface substantially flush with the sharpened upper edge of the cutting die. The stacked layers of compressible material are placed on top of the foam member and on top of the sharpened upper edge of the die and the upper platen of the associated press is lowered to precompress the stacked compressible layers prior to the cutting operation by the die. The foam member is an open cell member and has a compressibility such that it maintains a flat upper face flush with the upper cutting edge of the die during the precompression of the layers and thereafter moves downwardly in a smooth translatory manner to allow the layer to be moved downwardly through the cutting die.

Abstract: A compressed wastepaper block fastened by a plurality of wires is placed on a working table, and deformed or bent arcuately on the working table. After the compressed wastepaper block is bent, wires exposed in a concave created by the bent compressed wastepaper block are gripped by a presser/wire clamp, and a cutter is thrust substantially centrally into a convex side of the compressed wastepaper block which is opposite to the concave, thereby to cut off the exposed wires. The wires thus cut off are then removed from the compressed wastepaper block.
