    Abstract: A cutoff system for exterior siding which includes a flying punch and shear. The system includes a main carriage which is adapted to reciprocate and, in one direction of travel, move at the same speed as the siding to be cut. A pair of punches are then actuated to form the hanger and butt notches at the lateral edges of the siding. Upon withdrawal of the punches, the travel of the main cylinder is slowed such that the siding travels away from the punching area. Upon sensing the notched areas, the main carriage is again moved to travel at the same speed as the siding. The speed is timed such that the center of the notches is located below a shear. This shear is then actuated to form a single parting line across the siding. The carriage is then retracted to await the next cycle of the system. As such, with each cycle of the system, the notches are formed in the trailing and leading edges of adjacent panel segments, and the leading panel segment cut from the continuous siding.

    Abstract: In a multi-bobbin machine for making paper booklets e.g. of interleaved cigarette paper, a multiplicity of strips from respective supply bobbins are interfolded and converged to form a booklet strand which is cut to length by a cutting station which reciprocates along the strand so that booklet lengths enter it and are cut. A rotating non-circular shaft passes through the cutting station and a sleeve in the cutting station slides axially along the shaft as the station reciprocates and rotates with the shaft. The sleeve is independently linked to a strand clamp and to a cutting knife which are separately timed and move along different paths, the strand clamp moving longitudinally towards and away from the strand while the knife makes a slicing movement across and through the strand.

Use of a lever arm pivoted to one of the die shoes in combination with a cam on the other die shoe optimizes horizontal movement of the notching blade relative to vertical movement of the die shoes. In a preferred form, the cutoff blade is passed through a slot in the notching blade holder. The die set can be used in apparatus where the tubing is intermittently supplied, or, as in a tubing mill, a continuous length of tubing is moved during the severing process.

    Abstract: Apparatus is provided in which booklets of interleaved cigarette papers can be made from continuously moving strands of strip paper in which a cutting knife used to sever the paper strips precisely follows movement of the strip. Movement of a driven input shaft is brought onto the moving platform and used to operate the cutting knife. Paper from bobbins is converged by formers and a spreader into a strand advanced by nip rolls through a cutting station. The knife in the station cuts a booklet from the strand while the station moves with the strand. A driven rotatory shaft of non-circular section transmits its rotation to a sleeve that slides therealong as the station reciprocates relative to a shaft. The sleeve is operably connected e.g. by gearing or by a cam and follower to the knife so that rotation thereof brings about the cutting movement.

The carriage is reciprocated by a crank drive mechanism and additional connecting structure, which insures that the carriage will move at a constant linear speed for a duration of time sufficient to shear the tube as the carriage moves from a first location to a second location. The additional connecting structure includes a bell crank having an intermediate portion which is pivotally secured to the carriage, one end of the bell crank being secured to an end of a connecting rod of the crank drive mechanism, and the other end of the bell crank being provided with a cam follower which is caused to engage a stationary cam carried by the frame.
