Both Members Of Cutting Pair On Same Carrier Patents (Class 83/320)
  • Patent number: 4437372
Abstract: A shearing machine for cutting off a material being continuously fed at a constant high speed into a relatively short lengths requiring adjustment of the revolution speed of a driving motor only within a relatively small range. The shearing machine comprises mainly three sections: a reciprocating mechanism driven by a motor to move cutters horizontally, a travelling assembly and double-acting cylinder to drive a movable cutter vertically while being moved horizontally, and a two-way rotary valve driven by the motor to control the double-acting cylinder device in conjuinction with movement of the reciprocating mechanism. The reciprocating mechanism translates rotary torque into reciprocating linear motion of relatively small stroke length. The two-way rotary valve is driven directly by the motor, facilitating synchronization of horizontal cutter speed with material feed speed and rapid movement of the cutters without any response delay.

  • Patent number: 4411182
Abstract: A flying cutoff for cutting successive lengths of a continuously moving, elongate workpiece includes a carriage assembly provided with a cutoff die set which is slideably mounted on a swinging ram and is selectively accelerated or decelerated in synchronism with the movement of the workpiece by a belt drive system which includes a plurality of endless, flexible, toothed belts, each secured to the carriage assembly and trained around a corresponding drive and idler gear. The belts are of different pitches and/or tensions so as to give the belts differing resonant and harmonic frequencies which tend to cancel each other out in order to eliminate cutting measurement error created by the cumulative effects of belt oscillation. The drive gears are driven by a hydraulic motor whose output is precisely controlled by a direct current, reversible stepping motor.

  • Patent number: 4407179
Abstract: Process and apparatus for cutting an elongate complex structure composed of materials having different properties, e.g. a liner and a core which are relatively soft and flexible and susceptible to rupture or crushing and a facing of hard material such as a metal plate. The facing may have an upwardly turned portion, flange portion and groove portion at each side thereof. A carriage and a base frame are movable in the direction of the travel of the complex structure and in the direction perpendicular thereto, respectively. Various types of cutters are mounted on the carriage. The complex structure is instantaneously cut in the direction of the width thereof while it is travelling at a high speed. The cut composite structure has smooth and fine cut edges, and is useful for e.g. a siding of a building.

  • Patent number: 4394829
Abstract: In a flying shear wherein strip stock moves lengthwise forward, a lower blade carrier, confined to forward and backward motion, has an upwardly facing clamping surface and carries a lower shearing blade. An upper blade carrier, connected with the lower one for back and forth motion with it and for up and down motion relative to it, carries an upper shearing blade and is biased to a raised position. A gripper, connected to the lower blade carrier to swing about an axis spaced substantially above said clamping surface, has a bottom wedging surface curved eccentrically to said axis. The gripper is biased forward, for engagement of its said surface against strip stock whereby the strip stock is clamped to the clamping surface and pulls the blade carriers forward.

  • Patent number: 4376401
Abstract: A flying ram cutoff machine for severing successive lengths of an elongated workpiece continuously moving in the direction of its longitudinal axis employs a bevel gear drive for swinging a ram in synchronization with movement of the workpiece. A motor drive fly wheel and clutch assembly power a drive shaft which extends parallel to the longitudinal axis of the workpiece, at the rear of the machine. A pair of bevel gears disposed at spaced locations along the drive shaft form power take-offs for transmitting power from the drive shaft to a pair of input shafts which extend perpendicularly away from the drive shaft and toward the swingable ram. A pair of crank assemblies couple the input shafts with the ram to produce swinging movement of the ram upon rotation of the drive shaft. Backlash of the drive system is controlled by interposing a stabilizing spacer between one of the bevel gears and a stationary support.

  • Patent number: 4301723
Abstract: A swinging ram type cutoff press for severing lengths of elongated stock such as tubing is provided of the type in which a ram is supported for swinging movement to operate a cutoff die set. The cutoff press includes a power cylinder combined with a toggle link arrangement to produce the swinging movement of the ram. The relative geometry of the ram link support and the toggle mechanism coupled with the arrangement of the cylinder is such that a complete ram motion cycle is carried out during a single forward or return stroke of the cylinder. The force exerted by the cylinder and toggle mechanism is not resisted either by return springs or the weight of the ram, thereby further maximizing the usable power of the power cylinder. Accordingly, one may reduce the cylinder size requirements for a given application. In addition, the mechanical advantage afforded by the toggle mechanism provides for a maximum force at the ram full down position to maximize the force available for the blade stroke.

  • Patent number: 3994191
Abstract: A flying shear is disclosed in which a shear carriage is arranged to be driven along the pass line of a moving strip, between a pair of spaced shear platens. The carriage is constructed for telescoping movement and mounts a pair of cooperating carriage plates. The platen members are stationary, but are arranged to have relative closing and opening movement, in order to telescopically compress the shear carriage at desired times, to effect a shearing operation.A novel form of support is provided for the shear carriage, enabling the carriage normally to be supported from the platen structure by means of antifriction rollers, which accommodate rapid acceleration and high speed movement of the carriage. At the instant when the shearing operation is to occur, however, the closing movement of the platens serves to effectively disable or retract the antifriction roller support for the carriage and cause the carriage to be supported by relatively broad area, elongated, sliding friction bearing surfaces.

  • Patent number: RE30025
Abstract: A tubing cutoff die having a horizontally moving scarfing blade and a vertically moving cutoff blade. The tubing being cut off is held in clamping jaws movably mounted on the lower die shoe of the die and actuated by a cam extending from the upper die shoe. The scarfing blade is also mounted for horizontal reciprocation on the lower shoe and actuated by another cam fixed to the upper shoe. The cutoff blade is mounted on the upper die shoe. The two die shoes are reciprocably connected by post and bushing arrangements. There are three of these disposed so that the centerlines are at three of the corners of a rectangle. One of the clamping jaws is mounted on a holder reciprocably mounted on the lower die shoe and the other jaw is mounted on a second holder reciprocably mounted on the first holder. The mounting for the cutoff block provides for either of two rigidly located positions, for different tubing sizes, and the scarfing blade is also adjustable.
