  • Patent number: 5802941
Abstract: A cutter assembly for severing pieces from a length of material and advanced into proximity thereto includes a driven anvil roll and a driven rotary cutter roll disposed in opposed relation with each whereby the length of material is advanced between the rolls for cutting. The cutter roll carries at least one knife blade on its periphery to cut the material against the anvil roll into predetermined lengths as it is advanced between the rolls. The at least one knife of the cutter roll is mounted at an angle with respect to the longitudinal axis of the cutter roll so as to engage the material in a shearing motion and the cutter roll is attached to the anvil roll and mounted so as to be movable away from the anvil roll against the force of resilient means as the knife contacts the anvil roll during rotation. The degree of such movement may be adjusted by the use of shims removably placed between the resilient means and the mounting point of the cutter roll.

  • Patent number: 5216962
Abstract: The present invention relates to a shear for shearing laminar elements, flat material. This shear comprises at least one pair of blade-holders and associated blades which move substantially parallel to each other along straight lines which are spaced apart a predetermined distance from each other. The predetermined distance is computed as a function of the thickness of the material and the nature of the material which is to be sheared. The blades have cutting edges which, at the time of shearing, apply a pair of mutually perpendicular forces Fx and Fy to the material being sheared. The force Fy acts along a straight line perpendicular to a plane or surface through the material or upon which the material rests. It is along the straight line of the force Fy that the blade-holders and blades move during the shearing operation.

  • Patent number: 4450740
Abstract: A rotary envelope machine blank cutter is provided with laterally adjustable, independent frame units for each meshing set of knife rolls for changing the depth of a side cut into a blank for envelope size and style production changes. The rotational and axial meshing of hard and soft knives respective to a single knife roll set is adjusted without disturbing the roll mount of either knife. Changes in envelope length or style are accommodated by the mechanical capacity to adjust the rotation cut timing between the knife roll sets of a two-set unit and also between respective cutting units of two or more two-set units. As in the case of lateral cut adjustments, knife roll mounts are undisturbed by rotational timing adjustments. Consequently, the machine may be quickly and accurately changed for production runs of any of several envelope style and several sizes respective to each style: all adjustments being made without disturbing the knife profile mesh of any knife set.

  • Patent number: 4426897
Abstract: A method and apparatus for setting the positioning between a first rotating member and a second fixed or rotating member in a rotary machine comprises controlled thermal elements positioned on the frame supporting the members and/or on the rotating member(s) itself to counteract the effects of centrifugal force on the rotating member(s) to thereby approximately maintain the setting between the members. The temperature of the frame controlled by the thermal elements can be maintained in proportion to the speed of rotation of the rotary member(s) to maintain the setting of the rotary machine throughout its operating speed range. A predefined temperature may be set by the thermal elements prior to the manual setting of the rotary machine so that the temperature of the frame and/or rotating member(s) can be controlled to compensate for wear of the rotating member(s) in machines wherein such member(s) encounters wear over operating time.

  • Patent number: 4359919
Abstract: A rotary punch for punching envelope blanks from moving webs of paper or like or for making shaped cuts from prepared envelope blanks has a backup roll which bears on a cutter roll. The punch is characterized by the provision of intermediate bearings with an adjustable member therebetween. This precludes unwanted movements in the bearings between the two rolls due to varying cutting and out-of-balance forces, the adjustable member making it possible to correct the between-axes distance to suit cutter wear.

  • Patent number: 4341525
Abstract: In apparatus having a pair of spaced apart cylinders rotatable on respective axes that are substantially parallel and lie in a common plane, each cylinder has at each end thereof a smaller diameter concentric bearer ring. Each bearer ring on each cylinder is adjacent to a bearer ring on the other. For each bearer ring there is a roller supporting member that is movable in directions parallel to said plane and transverse to said axes, each roller supporting member being adjacent to its bearer ring, between that bearer ring and an adjacent roller supporting member. Two rollers on each supporting member, at opposite sides of said plane, rollingly engage its bearer ring. An adjustable spacer member reacting between adjacent supporting members substantially on said plane hold them spaced apart by an adjustably variable distance that determines the distance between the cylinders.

  • Patent number: 4308776
Abstract: The housing of web sectioning apparatus having a rotary knife assembly and a rotary cutting drum is provided with a pair of bearing surfaces. A frame is pivotally mounted on these bearing surfaces, and the rotary knife assembly is rotatably mounted to the frame eccentrically of the pivot axis between the frame and the housing. Thus, by pivoting the frame relative to the housing, the axis of rotation of the rotary knife assembly can be moved towards or away from the cutting drum to adjust the degree of engagement between the edges of the knife assembly and the cutting drum. Clamps are provided to force the frame against the bearing surfaces of the apparatus to prevent movement at the pivot axis between the frame and housing during operation. These clamps are released to allow adjustment. The frame can be pivoted in small increments to finely adjust the position of the knife assembly rotation axis relative to the cutting drum.

  • Patent number: 4208932
Abstract: A cutting mechanism including a backing roller having a longitudinal axis of rotation and a rotatably mounted cutting member having a cutting edge and a longitudinal axis of rotation disposed parallel to the axis of rotation of the roller member. The backing roller is freely rotatably mounted about its axis of rotation. Thus, the cutting member cuts at different locations along the circumferential surface of the backing roller each time. The backing roller is resiliently mounted to float in a direction transverse to a plane extending vertically through its axis of rotation. The roller is mounted on a carrier body that is laterally movable to effect movement of the roller in a direction parallel to the axis of rotation of the roller. Unique timing belt and gear drive mechanisms are used to effect driving of the draw rollers and cutting devices. A particular guide mechanism is used to direct the tear strip from a supply to the point where it is superimposed on a web of wrapping material.
