With Resilient Anvil Surface Patents (Class 83/347)
  • Patent number: 4031600
Abstract: A replaceable cover band for a machinery drum wherein the respective ends of the cover have mating flange portions which join together within a transverse slot located in the surface of the drum. Aligned apertures are located in the respective overlapping flanges for receipt of securing bolts to fasten the respective ends to the drum. Mounted in one of the flanges is a support bar which provides strength to that portion of the cover band which extends over the slot in the drum.

  • Patent number: 4020725
Abstract: An apparatus for perforating sheet material during travel of the latter in a given plane. The apparatus includes rotary punches which penetrate through the sheet material during travel thereof. The punches turn around an axis extending transversely with respect to the direction of travel of the sheet material so that each punch approaches the plane of the sheet material to initially contact the latter and then penetrate through and be retracted from the sheet material. Each punch has a concave punching end surface forming part of a cylinder whose axis is perpendicular to the punch axis and parallel to the axis around which each punch turns while approaching the plane of the sheet material. Thus, each punch has at its punching end leading and trailing tips which lead and trail considered in the direction of rotation of each punch.

  • Patent number: 4016786
Abstract: A sheet material is advanced to a first location where cutting tools cut into it but not through it along the outline of the desired blank. Thereupon the sheet material and the cutting tools are jointly advanced to a second location where the cutting tools cut completely through the sheet material along the outline, and subsequently the thus-severed blank and the surrounding sheet material scrap are removed separately from the second location.

  • Patent number: 4014234
Abstract: This cutting apparatus includes a frame structure supporting a cutting roller and a counter pressure roller arranged at an angle relative to the feed advance direction of sheet material to be cut. Drive means are provided for the cutting roller and for the counter pressure roller in the form of a common drive chain positively interconnecting the rollers with a drive motor through an instantaneously operable clutch, such as an electro-magnetic or pneumatic clutch. A brake is provided between the cutting roller and the frame structure, whereby the control of the clutch and of the brake is such that engagement of the positive drive through the clutch disengages the brake and vice-versa.

  • Patent number: 4005627
Abstract: The invention provides a rotary cutter drum for use in apparatus for cutting continuous web material into discrete lengths in which the polar moment of inertia is kept to a minimum. The drum consists of a prefabricated metal load bearing member to which a block, on which a knife blade is mounted, and a balancing member are secured. The load bearing member, the block and the balancing member are then covered in a light-weight material such as an integral skin polyurethane rigid foam material arranged so that the outer surface of the whole drum is rotational symmetrical, the surface being interrupted to allow for the mounting of the knife blade.

  • Patent number: 4004479
Abstract: A rotary chopper having upper and lower chopper rolls, in which the rolls run in contact with one another, with the chopper blades being formed flush with the surface of the rolls, the surface of the rolls between the chopper blades being formed of a relatively hard stiff resilient material, of such a nature, that at least adjacent to the location of the chopper blades themselves, it may be deflected inwardly to accomodate the overlap of the chopper blades, and then will spring outwardly again so as to constitute the smooth cylindrical surface of the roll. In this way, the scrap edge portion of the strip is permanently gripped between the nip of the rolls at all times, and at the same time the fan-like action of the blades is eliminated, since they are flush with the surface of the rolls.

  • Patent number: 3992967
Abstract: A fiber cutter for cutting lengths of glass fibers and glass rovings into short lengths includes a cutter roller carrying a plurality of cutting blades and shaped annular means cooperatively associated with a resilient back-up roll means. In operation the force executed between the cutter roller and the back-up roller controls the spacing between the rollers by forcing the shaped annular means into the resilient surface of the back-up roller means. In addition to permitting control of spacing, the coaction of the cutter roller with its shaped annular means and the resilient back-up roll means holds the rollers in alignment, reduces the bounce between the rollers as the blades engage and pass over the back-up roll means and permit force to be used to build the blades in engagement with the back-up roll means without blade breakage.

  • Patent number: 3977617
Abstract: Apparatus for unwinding synthetic resin film from large mill rolls of such film, and concurrently winding the film in a product roll for purposes of marketing, after transversely perforating the film at spaced intervals along its length to form a series of detachably interconnected sheets of film. The apparatus includes means for automatically feeding mill rolls to the unwinding mechanism of the apparatus, means for optionally automatically or manually braking the rotary motion of a rotating, unwinding mill roll with a braking force of a magnitude correlated to the constantly changing diametric size of the unwinding mill roll, and means for automatically counting, in a precise fashion, the number of sheets of the film formed in the wound product roll defined by pairs of adjacent perforations therein.

  • Patent number: 3971277
Abstract: Matted fibrous material is fed between a rotatable shaft having a chopping blade mounted thereon and a rubber-covered back-up roll cooperable with the blade. Clutch and brake means enable the blade shaft to be rotated intermittently through one turn to chop off a selected length of material. An upper portion of the back-up roll is above the plane of support of feed and discharge conveyors on opposite sides of the back-up roll, and a cam on the blade shaft compresses the material before it is chopped by the blade.

  • Patent number: 3968713
Abstract: A machine for cross-cutting a web of material. A roller-mounted knife carrier is supported along its length on a bend-resistant support by supporting plates which are rotatably driven in synchronization with the knife carrier. The plates are of generally circular configuration with recesses on the circumference thereof to permit passage of the knife therethrough.

  • Patent number: 3946628
Abstract: A rotary veneer clipper has a pair of cutting blades spaced 180.degree. apart on a rotary clipper shaft for cutting cooperation with a roller anvil below and parallel to the clipper shaft and over which sheet material passes. The clipper shaft rotates intermittently on signal to cause one of its blades to clip the sheet. The clipper shaft is driven by a pair of pneumatic drive cylinders mounted one to each of two crank arms connected to a common drive shaft. The cylinders stroke once simultaneously to rotate the drive shaft alternately in opposite directions through 90.degree. upon each successive clip signal. When the drive shaft rotates in one direction, a first gear train transmits power from the drive shaft through a first one-way clutch to the clipper shaft to rotate one of the blades downwardly and through 180.degree. to clip the sheet.
