Abstract: A stitch flap cutting block is mountable to a cutting head of a board blank cutting machine, along with a slotting knife. A sheet of board passed between the cutting head and an anvil head is cut to form a blank for a box or the like. The cutting block comprises a steel body with a cylindrical barrel holding a cylindrical spring block, to which is mounted a blade holder carrying an elongate blade. The blade moves within a transverse slot across the body and is deflectable into the body and may rock about a midpoint of the slot. Impact forces are reduced, cleaner cuts are produced, and re-setting of the blade is required much less often. An alternative stitch flap cutting block is mountable to the cutting head by a separate side arm, facilitating mounting to cutting heads having different diameters.

Abstract: A method and apparatus particularly suited for cutting continuously moving thermoplastic film such as linear low density polyethylene and includes a stationary anvil, preferably a roller of tool steel and a tungsten carbide die mounted for rotation along a circular arc intersecting the anvil. In an embodiment for punching holes in the film, the apparatus includes a saddle shaped hollow tungsten carbide die projecting slightly above the cylindrical surface of a roll passing under a spring biased tool steel roller for cutting a semicircular hole in a continuously moving continuous plastic film web for the manufacturer draw tape bags. A vacuum is supplied to the center of the die for removing the segment of plastic film cut out by the apparatus.

  • Patent number: 4860623
Abstract: Apparatus for severing the running web of tipping paper in a filter tipping machine has a rotary drum-shaped counterknife which cooperates with equidistant knives at the periphery of a rotary knife carrier to sever the leader of the running web at regular intervals. The knives are individually adjustable with reference to the counterknife so that their cutting edges merely contact the peripheral surface of the counterknife when they assume severing positions in planes including the axis of rotation of the counterknife, and each knife is unyieldingly held against any movement relative to the carrier when the apparatus is in actual use so that the adjusting mechanisms for the knives need not take up any of the stresses which develop when the knives cooperate with the counterknife to sever the running web.

Abstract: The notching device effects transverse cuts in strip wrapping material, and in particular, along the length of a continuous strip of transparent outer wrapping material incorporating a longitudinal tear-open ribbon, which is severed with each cut. Use is made of an incision roller fitted with at least one peripheral blade, and a pressure roller mounted rotatably to a shaft having two distinct, coaxial end sections that are carried by a support in such a way as to permit adjustment of their angular position; the shaft also has an intermediate section which is embodied skew in relation to the two end sections, and it is to this skew section that the pressure roller is mounted.

  • Patent number: 4799414
Abstract: A variable rotary cutter assembly for transverse cutting of web material as it passes through a nip between rotating anvil and knife cylinders includes one or more cutter assemblies selectively positionable on the periphery of the knife cylinder. Each cutter assembly includes a base block adapted to be releasibly mounted on the knife cylinder, and a pair of pivotally connected block members one of which is adapted for releasibly mounting on an associated base block and the other of which carries an elongated knife blade and is outwardly pivotable about a pivot axis parallel to and spaced from the knife blade. Spring means bias the knife carrier block member outwardly about its pivot axis so as to effect a predetermined cutting pressure per unit length of the knife blade against the anvil while enabling self-adjusting movement of the knife blade to accommodate substantial variance in anvil and knife cylinder spacing and knife blade wear.

Abstract: A device for dividing a continuous web of wrapping material into successive single sections of the same length, particularly for dividing a web of wrapping material into successive single bands used in the manufacture of filter-tipped cigarettes. The device includes a rotary cutting roller with one or more angularly equispaced peripheral radial blades, the cutting edge of which is parallel to the axis of a shaft for driving in rotation the said cutting roller (1). The blade or blades are each secured to a bridge-shaped blade-carrying member which by elastic deformation is elastically yieldable in the radial direction and can be completely or partly made from the skirt of the cutting roller fastened to the roller or from a block added and secured to the skirt.

Abstract: The invention refers to an apparatus for dividing a continuous web of material into successive single sections, particularly for dividing a web of covering material into successive single bands used in the manufacturing of filter-tipped cigarettes. Such an apparatus comprises a rotary cutting roller with one or more peripheral radial knives which are angularly spaced apart from each other and have their cutting edge parallel to the axis of rotation of the cutting roller. According to the invention, each knife is secured to a knife holder consisting of a bridge-like member having an inherent elastic compressibility in the radial direction, which in the fashion of a beam with a plurality of supports is supported by the cutting roller on two end supports and on one or more intermediate supports. The supports are preferably adjustable in the radial direction, and particularly consist of wedges.

  • Patent number: 4732067
Abstract: A veneer clipper of rotary type is disclosed wherein a cutting knife carried by an intermittently rotatable knife carrage roll cuts through a veneer sheet moving past an anvil roll. The clipper has a plurality rotatable back-up rolls which are movable reciprocally toward and away from the carriage roll. In their operative position, the back-up rolls are pressed against the circumferential surface of the carriage roll for bracing the same to counteract the reactional pressure exerted by the anvil roll during veneer cutting. There is provided means for driving reciprocally the back-up rolls in conjunction with the intermittent rotation of the knife carriage in such a way that the back-up rolls may be kept in pressing contact with the knife carriage roll at least while the veneer sheet is being cut by the knife and then moved away from the surface after each such cut.
