  • Patent number: 7097727
Abstract: A pad forming process forms a stack of sheets, each sheet bearing adhesive on at least a portion of one side thereof. A sheet cutting die is provided having sheet collection cavity therein. A web comprising a linerless elongated sheeting having one side at least partially covered with an adhesive is advanced past the die. The die cuts the web to form a first cut sheet which is retained within the sheet collection cavity of the die. The web continues to advance past the die. The die then cuts the web to form a second cut sheet from the web which is retained within the sheet collection cavity of the die, wherein the second cut sheet adheres to the first cut sheet within the sheet collection cavity to form a stack of sheets.

Abstract: To produce at least one perforation in a non-woven sheet (N) of fibers or filaments, the sheet (N) is brought into contact with a perforated cylinder (2), equipped with at least one insert (8). Each insert includes, at one end, a plane surface (S), and is provided with a recess (8b) which emerges in the plane surface (S), and which has a sharp edge (8g) formed by the intersection of the inner surface (8f) of the recess (8b) with the plane surface (S). A perforation in the non-woven sheet (N) is obtained by cutting out a portion (P) of the non-woven sheet (N) by shearing of the fibers or filaments of the non-woven sheet (N), between the sharp edge (8g) of the insert (8) and a perforating member (9) driven simultaneously in translation and in rotation about its own axis.

  • Patent number: 7004053
Abstract: A closed-loop system can maintain a pre-set cut length of a material as the material is cut and placed on a web. The system has the ability to measure the actual cut length, compare the average actual cut length to a target cut length, and to adjust web tension or feed roll speed to achieve the target cut length. Actual cut length variation is thereby reduced. Furthermore, short term cut length variation is further reduced by minimizing the tension of the web just prior to the material being cut.

Abstract: To shorten the processing time in modern plants for cutting away pieces or sections from a continously moving endless material, e.g. a glass strip, one after the other by flying cutting the cutting bridge carrying the cutting device (6) is accelerated until at a speed within a predetermined tolerance range of the feed speed of the continuously running endless material. Then the cutting bridge speed is synchronized for each piece or section to be cutaway and the cutting away of each piece or section takes place after the synchronization. To attain a very high precision cutting the spacing of the front cut edge formed when the previous piece or section is cut away from the cutting device is measured by means of an image-taking device (7) prior to cutting away of the next piece or section. Then the measured spacing is compared with a set value for the spacing and the speed of the cutting bridge is synchronized or fine tuned according to the comparison prior to cutting away the next piece or section.

Abstract: Novel apparatus and method are disclosed for cutting a sheet material by a rotary die cutter. A die shaft has an outer circumference and at least two die shaft bores having coaxial counterbores. The counterbores relieve stresses imposed by a die cutting insert. A knife formed about an outside periphery of the die cutting insert has a cutting edge and first and second side walls aligned at an angle of at least 15 degrees. The die cutting insert is removably attached at the inside periphery to the die shaft outer circumference. At least two threaded bolts sized to die cutting insert apertures secure the die cutting insert to the die shaft bores. Stresses are relieved in the internal metal of the die shaft as each insert is mounted, interchangeably and repeatedly, for cutting layered absorbent articles in large numbers and with multiple replacement of cutting die inserts without machining all of the die surfaces to keep the nip constant.

Abstract: A hydraulic press is provided with a fixed base and at least one rail. The hydraulic press is slidably disposed on the rail. A die is slidably mounted on the hydraulic press for operatively engaging a moving coil of material upon activation of the hydraulic press. A clamp is fixably connected with the die and is slidably mounted on the hydraulic press. The clamp has a pneumatically powered anvil which secures itself to the moving coil of material to cause the clamp and the die to move along with the moving coil of material. A first stop is disposed between the press and the die for providing engagement there between to stop relative movement between the die and the hydraulic press. An accelerator displaces the hydraulic press with respect to the base to move along with the moving coil of material. The clamp holds the material while the die engages the moving coil of material to ensure tension in the moving coil of material.
