Abstract: A programmable machine for roll forming metal decoiled from a roll of metal and cutting the panels at a desired angle is provided. The roll former can form male and female edges on the metal which are necessary for a metal roof. The machine has a notcher to notch the metal where it is to be cut in order to avoid difficulty in cutting through a male or female edge. An exit cutter is provided after the metal has been roll formed. The angle at which the exit cutter can cut is also calculated in the programmable computer. A measuring device for measuring the roof and transferring the data to the programmable machine for cutting the panels completes a system for automatically and accurately cutting the panels for the roof.

  • Patent number: 5195412
Abstract: A cutoff system for exterior siding which includes a flying punch and shear. The system includes a main carriage which is adapted to reciprocate and, in one direction of travel, move at the same speed as the siding to be cut. A pair of punches are then actuated to form the hanger and butt notches at the lateral edges of the siding. Upon withdrawal of the punches, the travel of the main cylinder is slowed such that the siding travels away from the punching area. Upon sensing the notched areas, the main carriage is again moved to travel at the same speed as the siding. The speed is timed such that the center of the notches is located below a shear. This shear is then actuated to form a single parting line across the siding. The carriage is then retracted to await the next cycle of the system. As such, with each cycle of the system, the notches are formed in the trailing and leading edges of adjacent panel segments, and the leading panel segment cut from the continuous siding.

  • Patent number: 4548114
Abstract: A cylindrical body resembling a piece of pipe has the sharp edge of a utility-knife blade extending into the bore of the body to cut a longitudinal slit in the wall of a piece of plastic tubing that is pushed or pulled through the bore. A removable stop protruding into the bore momentarily stops the piece of tubing until another utility blade, connected to a guide and handle positioned at an angle across the cylindrical body, is pulled into the slitted end of the tubing to cut on a line that intersects the longitudinal slit. A pointed angular piece is thereby cut out and removed to leave in the end of the piece of tubing a notch with a surface slanting outward toward the end of the piece of tubing for functioning as an inclined plane to spread the tubing. A linkage connected between the angular guide and the stop removes the stop to permit completion of slitting. A handle with a triangular blade is also connected transversely to the cylindrical body for cutting the slitted tubing into lengths.

  • Patent number: 4283976
Abstract: A cutting means in an apparatus for continuously manufacturing spiral strip piping, fed in unbroken lengths, consisting of an upper, driven knife wheel (4) and a lower, freely rotating, circular, substantially horizontal support roller knife (20). The knives (4,20) are arranged on a table (22), swivellable in relation to the travel of the strip (1) and displaceable perpendicularly to the travel of the strip (1). Before cutting, the angle of the upper knife (4) to the travel of the strip (1) is adjusted, by means of the swivellable table (22), to the desired pipe diameter for providing square pipe ends.

  • Patent number: 4265104
Abstract: In a method for simultaneously cutting three continuous double-comb components from a metal strip the strip is moved forward stepwise. At each stop, a row of notches is made along each edge to form teeth and a row of crosses is removed from its central part, the crosses being made up of two portions of the central part and two teeth facing notches and separated therefrom by a portion of the central part. After the teeth have been bent, the comb-shaped components can be used to reinforce rubber packing or linings, more particularly in the car industry.

  • Patent number: 4098154
Abstract: The apparatus disclosed herein is designed to advance a row of aligned, on edge, sheets of corrugated, which are destined to become partitions, past a table-mounted notching saw. The apparatus is particularly suited to be used at the end of the run to advance all of the remaining corrugated sheets through the notching saw without manual assistance. A horizontally positioned, reciprocable slide member having pairs of pivotally mounted latches which serve to engage the last sheet and, upon actuation of the slide, draws the sheet and column of sheets in front thereof through the saw. One set of latches, upon reciprocation of the slide, moves the sheets to the saw or notching zone and upon further reciprocation the second set of latches will engage the sheets and draw them completely past the notching zone and free of the saw.

  • Patent number: 4070890
Abstract: A method and apparatus for automatically cutting wrappers or the like from metal sheets. A metal sheet is conveyed in the x-direction to a cutting position wherein a pair of cutting blade (i.e., shears) assemblies cut edge portions from the metal sheet to form a cut wrapper or the like having longitudinal edges. The cutting assemblies are movable in the y-dimension--transverse to the x-direction--and are also angularly movable. From the cutting position the cut wrapper is continuously conveyed to a notching position wherein notching assemblies also movable in the y-dimension may form notches in the longitudinal edges of the cut wrapper. At a further point in the x-direction, an edge deforming position may be provided including edge deforming apparatus that also is movable in the y-dimension. Flexible elongated members or the like support the metal sheet spaced from its conveyor during conveying to prevent damage to the conveyor by the cutting or notching assemblies.
