    Abstract: In an apparatus for making plastics carrier bags from a web of tubular film of thermoplastic material, a feeding mechanism intermittently conveys the webs by one bag width and a severing mechanism cuts the web into half tubes along an undulating curve. A carriage displaceable in the machine frame transversely to the feeding direction of the web is reciprocated by a drive derived from a first rotating control cam through gearing. A cutting knife pivotable in the carriage about its longitudinal axis passes through the plane of the tube about an axis perpendicular thereto and is so controlled by an oscillating drive derived from a second rotating control cam that its edge is substantially tangential to the undulating curve at the cutting point. A detour assembly retards one of the half tubes to bring the bag side edge zones into phase and each half tube is formed into bags by a transverse sever-sealing device.

A nozzle mounted on the cutting arm and connected to a source of high pressure fluid and a fluid jet ejected from the nozzle towards the web and moved by the cutting arm in an oscillating manner along a path between the turn-around area and the position over the web. As the fluid jet oscillates along its path, the movement of the fluid jet in conjunction with the movement of the web results in the cutting out of a section of the web.

    Abstract: A cutter system for pipe casings and the like, including a generally "C" shaped cutter assembly body having an always open side entry and exit area leading into the centrally located cutter area with an annular trackway extending an exemplary 290.degree. about the operative center of the cutter system. A cutter sub-assembly is carried on the trackway for back and forth movement of an exemplary 110.degree. in each direction with the sub-assembly carrying two, directly opposed rotating cutter blades which cut the pipe casing as the sub-assembly is moved to and from on the trackway. The two blades travel in each direction a minimum of one-half their arcuate spacing difference and preferrably less than their arcuate spacing difference, producing a full 360.degree. cut. The cutters are radially moved in and out by a reciprocating yoke assembly. The cutter body assembly is pivotally mounted onto a telescoping boom attached to for example a work vehicle.

    Abstract: A method and device for slitting or edge trimming strip material on a process line are described in which trimming knives 2 mounted on a base 3 which is pivotally mounted on a sub-base 4, trim the edges of strip 14. The lateral position of the strip is sensed by sensors 10 and the position of the strip relative to center line of the process line is determined by a computer (not shown) which controls the lateral movement of the sub-base 4 by a hydraulic jack 9 so as to keep the strip and trimmer in alignment. The speed V of the strip is sensed and the speed V.sub.T of the trimmer is sensed by a transducer 12. The base 3 and thus each pair of knives 2 is pivoted about a pivot 11 on the sub-base 4 so that the angle .alpha. the knives make with the center line of the process, tends to equal tan .sup.31 1 (V.sub.T/V).

    Abstract: A handle bag of a predetermined width is made from a synthetic-resin tube. This tube is fed at a predetermined feed speed through a cutting station where it is spanned over a cutting drum formed with an endless circumferentially extending and undulating cutting groove. A blade engages radially inwardly through this groove so that as the tube passes over the drum it is subdivided transversely into a pair of tube halves. The blade reciprocates back and forth transversely of the tube in the cutter groove by rotation of the drum at such a rate as to form on the confronting cut edges of the tube halves interfitting and staggered handle flaps. One of these tube halves is then detoured through a distance equal to an odd whole-number multiple of half of the bag width and then is realigned with the other tube half with the flaps in transverse alignment. The two tube halves are then seamed together simultaneously.
