Patent number: 5301584Abstract: The present invention is a pair of split dies comprises of a pair of fixed die halves, with each fixed die half having an associating movable die insert. The pair of split dies are separated from each other in order to admit a cutting blade therebetween and a variable width opening is formed between each of the fixed die halves and their associating movable die inserts. The movable die inserts move toward the fixed die halves and thereby decrease the width of the openings in response to cam means attaching to the blade which engage movable cam tracks located on the movable die inserts opposite the openings. The openings close on tubing located within the openings so that the tubing is held stationary on either side of where the blade cuts the tubing. The movable die inserts move away from the fixed die halves and thereby increase the width of the openings in response to disengagement with the cam means.Type: GrantFiled: March 15, 1993Date of Patent: April 12, 1994Assignee: Touchstone, Inc.Inventor: Wayne A. Patent number: 5125306Abstract: An overload assembly is disclosed for use with a tube cutting apparatus of the type having a die set for holding a tube while a blade cuts the tube. The die set comprises two die jaws having cam followers which contact a die jaw cam to move the die jaws to clamp the tube. The overload assembly allows one of the die jaws of the die set to stop moving when an obstruction is encountered. The overload assembly includes a spring mounted through a lever arm to the cam follower. An overload biasing force is applied to the cam follower through the lever arm. If an obstruction force exceeds the overload biasing force, the lever arm is rotated and the effective length of the lever arm is reduced, causing the overload biasing force to decay to a lesser value. A scarfing blade may initially score the tube prior to cutting. In one embodiment, the overload biasing force is applied to the die jaw which does not encounter a binding force between the scarfing blade and the tube.Type: GrantFiled: November 27, 1990Date of Patent: June 30, 1992Inventor: John Borzym

Patent number: 4872384Abstract: A tube cutting apparatus of the type in which jaws carried by relative reciprocal slides move into and out of clamping engagement with tubing, the clamped tubing is thereof notched at its upper periphery with a scarfing blade, and the notched tubing is thereafter severed with a guillotine blade. The scarfing blade and the guillotine blade each are secured to their respective holders by a cam pin which coacts with a cam surface to bring an eccentric portion of the cam pin into wedging coaction with the blade in response to rotation of the pin and firmly and wedgingly secure the blade to its respective holder. The blade may be removed from the respective holder by simply rotating the cam pin a fraction of a revolution and then withdrawing the blade. A new or reground blade is replaced in the respective holder by simple insertion into the holder and rotation of the cam pin a fraction of a revolution in the opposite direction.Type: GrantFiled: January 29, 1988Date of Patent: October 10, 1989Inventor: John J. Patent number: 4867022Abstract: A device for producing perforations in a flexible rack. With mechanical drive systems a "rack" is a linear element used with a rotary element whereby linear and rotary motions are displaced. The flexible rack processed by this invention consists of a tape having a cross-sectional curvature. It is thin, rigidly straight, resilient and used for "interconverting" (mutually converting or equally displacing) linear and rotary motions. A method is taught for perforating a rack along its length. Perforations are produced whil the rack is bent radially and flattened laterally corresponding to a position with which the rack will be used when "interconverting linear and rotary motions.Type: GrantFiled: August 11, 1987Date of Patent: September 19, 1989Inventor: Edwin A. Patent number: 4848723Abstract: An overload protection device for the clamping portion of a tube cutoff die set. The overload protection device is used to prevent destructive overload forces in the event a mechanical obstruction prevents the tube clamping die jaws from fully closing in response to the forces applied by a control cam. The overload protector comprises a wedge mounted between rollers. If overload occurs the wedge is squeezed out of position against the operation of a compression spring. After the overload condition is eliminated the wedge is returned to position by the compression spring.Type: GrantFiled: February 11, 1985Date of Patent: July 18, 1989Inventor: John J. Borzym

Patent number: 4846029Abstract: A heated aluminum log which is to be sheared is inserted through a stationary die and a movable die. A clamp of the stationary die is then moved towards an axis of that die to clamp the log against a diametrically opposite portion of the internal surface of the stationary die. Opposite members of the stationary die are then moved towards each other in a direction perpendicular to the direction of movement of the clamp, to limit expansion of the sheared log. The movable die is then moved to shear the log.Type: GrantFiled: February 19, 1988Date of Patent: July 11, 1989Assignee: Mechatherm Engineering LimitedInventor: John A. Gardner
