  • Patent number: 6484551
Abstract: A process for manufacturing holes on the circumference of a hollow section situated in an internal high pressure forming tool uses the action of a punch integrated in the forming tool. A desired breaking point is formed on the hollow section, which follows the edge contour of the operating face of the punch; and after the withdrawal of the punch, the hollow section material surrounded by the desired breaking area, acted upon by internal high pressure, is extracted from the hollow section from the inside to the outside, forming a hole. In order to produce holes on the circumference of hollow sections, in which the shape of the outer circumference of the hollow section is maintained, the wall of the hollw section is weakened to form an unstable thin area. The punch penetrates into the wall of the hollow section at an internal high pressure which corresponds to the forming pressure for forming a hollow blank inserted in the forming tool.

Abstract: Method and apparatus for forming unobstructed holes in a hydroformed metal part employs a punch having a peripheral side conforming to the desired hole shape and an end face having a central cutting edge with a high point that contacts on closure of a hydroforming die with an unsupported wall section of the part initiating a stress riser therein. During forming of the part, the hydraulic pressure forces the above wall section outward against this high point increasing the magnitude of the stress riser. The punch is advanced while maintaining the hydraulic pressure causing the above high point to fracture this wall section at the stress riser and the above cutting edge to then split and cut this wall section to form oppositely facing cut edges in this section. Simultaneously, oppositely angled cutting edges at opposite ends of the central cutting edge and at the punch end face periphery then cut this wall section in directions away from the oppositely facing cut edges to form oppositely extending slugs.

The internal tooling comprises a mandrel having a position stabilization rod extending along the tube end feed path and equipped with a pair of spaced apart latches which operate in a complemental fashion to permit tube lengths to be fed onto the mandrel rod and later fed through the shear without ever unlocking the stabilization rod and losing the proper positioning of the mandrel.

  • Patent number: 6119324
Abstract: An apparatus and process for forming a discontinuous slot, recess or other such opening of predetermined size and location in an extrusion section, such as a window jamb liner. The apparatus includes a cutting or shaping device mounted on or closely adjacent an extruding die, such device including a tip movable between a retracted position and an extended position. In the extended position, the tip engages the extrusion as the extrusion is formed and leaves the die, to thereby slit or otherwise remove a strip or other predetermined amount of material from the extrusion and thus form a recess or opening. As the cutter-like member is extended into or retracted from the extrusion, the tip of the cutterlike member shears the extrusion cross-wise to form an opening which may form an end of a slot and the length of time the tip remains in such contact with the extrusion determines the slots length.

  • Patent number: 6058605
Abstract: A process for forming angled trim lines on vehicle frame cross members to mate and secure the ends of the cross members with frame side rail members with a high degree of accuracy and in a cost efficient manner. The process includes the steps of removing portions of the end of a rectangular tube to form angled trim lines and connecting the angled trim lines with the frame side rail member. A cam trimming die is used to form the angled trim lines. The die includes substantially symmetrical drivers, slide cams, and filler cams. The drivers move the slide cams and filler cams in opposing directions. The slide cams carry cutting steels that form the angled trim lines as the slide cam moves. The filler cams support the rectangular tube and produce a sheering effect with the cutting steels as they move past one another.

  • Patent number: 6032559
Abstract: A pipe punch apparatus which generally comprises a punch housing, a punch means situated within the punch housing, and a collar. The punch housing is connected to a bi-directional hydraulic fluid pump means. Depending on which direction the pump is set, the pump releases fluid into the punch housing which causes the punch means to either extend from the punch housing or retract into the punch housing. The collar is connected to the punch housing by a connecting means so that a notch within the collar receives the punch means when the punch means is in the extended position. The parts are also relatively situated so that positioning the punch housing within a pipe will cause the collar to be located exterior to the pipe. Thus, as the punch means moves from its initial retracted position to its extended position, it will also punch a hole through the pipe.

  • Patent number: 6006566
Abstract: A method and a device for removal of a slug separated from a hollow profile by means of a fluidic internal pressure from a hydroforming tool. The slug is separated from the hollow profile from the inside to the outside by the retraction of a plunger integrated into the hydroforming tool and clearing a slug channel when retracted, and is forced out of the die cavity of the hydroforming tool into the slug channel. Then, with the hollow profile in a zero-pressure state, the slug, which after it is pressed in abuts the end of the plunger, is removed by a removal tool from the hydroforming tool. In order to remove slugs from the hydroforming tool in any desired position of the slug channel that leads into the die of the hydroforming tool, in which the slug is initially received after perforation, in simple fashion, the slug is held at the end of the plunger during its stay in the slug channel by an adhesion means connected with the plunger.

  • Patent number: 5974936
Abstract: It is the purpose of this utility process invention to allow a means to recycle the common aluminum beverage can. This is accomplished with the addition of a scribe or scribes to the circumference of the can. The depth and position of the scribe acting as a pre-conditioner, weakening the can a specific amount in a specific location, there by allowing the desired or eventually desired separation at that specific location by secondary means if required. The scribe allows the can to be separated into cylindrical sections having a very smooth and accurate cut edge. These sections may be containers similar to a cup shape, sections with both ends of the can removed and sections with the can top removed. These scribes may or may not meet. Depending upon the eventual use, the sections may remain united. These scribes may be added any time during the can's life span either before opening or after opening and emptying the original contents.

  • Patent number: 5974846
Abstract: A metal tube is cold formed into a stamped member by filling the tube with a liquid change-of-state material, freezing the change-of-state material, sealing the tube containing the solid change-of-state material, and stamping the tube in a die. The change-of-state material compresses during the stamping step to force the walls of the tube to conform to the die cavity, eliminating the need to pressurize the tube prior or subsequent to stamping. Additionally, the solid within the tube provides support to the wall of the tube during a piercing step to form a hole in the tube having less deformation surrounding the hole than a comparative tube pierced without having the solid fill. After the stamping or piercing steps, the change-of-state material is melted and drained from the tube. Further, a tube is pierced by forming an outwardly bulged area and piercing the tube in the outwardly bulged area while simultaneously depressing the tube to substantially flatten the outwardly bulged area.

  • Patent number: 5967010
Abstract: A process for cutting hollow molded plastic parts uses two knife cuttings in sequence. A first knife blade (42) is pressed on an uncut hollow molded plastic part for cutting therethrough with a guillotine blade action to form an access hole (46, 48) in the plastic part (10). The plastic part (10) may be secured onto a clamp (34, 36) for the first guillotine blade action. An outer support clamp (50, 52) is then secured about the plastic part with an outer side of the support clamp being positioned in proximity to the finished cut edge (65) of a finished plastic part. A mandrel (54) is inserted into the access hole (46, 48) of the part. The inner end of the mandrel is axially spaced from the outer side of the support clamp to allow a thin knife blade therebetween. A thin knife blade (62, 64) then cuts off the rough edge (47) to provide a finished cut edge (65) in the plastic part axially interposed between the outer side of the support clamp and the inner mandrel.

Abstract: The invention features implementation of a flat triangular blade which has wo cutting edges and a sharp point. The blade is caused to move pointwise across a cylindrical can's diameter, with the plane of the blade perpendicular to the can's axis, so that the point pierces the can, the two cutting edges slice through the can in both directions around the can's circumference, and the point again, diametrically oppositely, pierces the can. The inventive removal of the residual contents and propellants from a spent aerosol can is optimally effective, because the invention divides the can into two separate parts, concomitantly subdividing the can's internal components.
