  • Patent number: 5195413
Abstract: The invention provides a punch press and shearing tool which operate to provide a series of cuts linked end-to-end for severing a work piece such as a piece of sheet metal. The shearing tool includes first and second elongated, cooperating cutting blades. Each of the blades has a pair of slidably related faces that slide against one another in a plane of reciprocation. The cutting edges are oriented at a small angle, e.g. 2.degree. to 6.degree., relative to one another to sever a piece of sheet stock progressively along a line with a scissor action. An intermittent work piece advancing motor shifts the work piece toward the cutting blades and parallel to the cut when the blades are apart. Gripping members can be yieldably mounted adjacent the cutting blades to grasp and forcefully hold the work piece in place as one blade moves toward the other. Yieldable stripper members on opposite sides of the second blade engage and independently deal with the stock on opposite sides of the cut.

  • Patent number: 5184498
Abstract: A turret punch press wherein the upper and lower turrets are rotated, and the upper die positioned in the processing position is struck by a piston rod (striker element) of a striker device mounted on the lower end of a ram when the ram is lowered by means of a crank shaft (mechanical vertically moving means). The piston rod can be freely moved vertically by a hydraulic cylinder so that the amount of the stroke of the striker element with respect to the upper die is the sum of the amount of the stroke of the ram and the amount of the stroke of the piston rod in the hydraulic cylinder itself. Accordingly, the upper die and the lower die come into contact and the processing occurs only when the ram and the piston rod are both at bottom dead center.

  • Patent number: 5119666
Abstract: A turret punch press includes an upper and lower turrets for respectively supporting a plurality of punches and dies; the punches are arranged two-dimensionally in a punch mounting regions on the upper turret and the dies are arranged two-dimensionally in a die mounting region on the lower turret. The turret punch press further includes a ram and a striker for striking the punches. The striker is provided on a bottom of the ram so as to be movable in two horizontal directions above the punches indexed in a processing region. In the turret punch press, when the turret is indexed in the processing region, many punches and dies are simultaneously indexed in the processing region. Thus, by moving the striker in two horizontal directions above the punches indexed in the processing region, many successive punch operations can be quickly performed without intermediate rotation of the turrets.

  • Patent number: 5072620
Abstract: A stamping tool for use in an auto-indexable tool station having a number of character inserts that can be rotatably moved below a striker area so that a thin metal plate or sheet of metal may be marked. The stamping tool allows for automatic adjustment of tool length for any variation in material thickness. A pneumatic cylinder actuates a mechanism that engages the key way in the head nut. The tool length is changed by the rotary motion of the auto-indexable tool station. The character housing is rotated by the indexable tool station through the punch key which moves the selected character insert to the striker area within the tool. The striker area causes the character insert which is spring biased to protrude lower than the character inserts that are not in the striker area. When the stamping tool is struck by the ram, only the character insert in the striker area will contact the material to be marked.

  • Patent number: 4341137
Abstract: A pneumatic press assembly 10 uses air pressure to power a piston 70 in a cylinder 52 through a power stroke. Springs 76, 78, 80, 82, 84, and 86 oppose the motion of the piston 70. A set of return springs (76 and 78) is effective over the entire stroke of the piston. The return springs are compactly mounted within the cylinder 52 between the bottom of the piston 70 and a shoulder 56 which extends radially inwardly from the cylinder wall. The shoulder also cooperates with a central portion 110 of the piston 70 to prevent rotation of the piston. A second set of springs (80, 82, 84, and 86) is effective only when the piston 70 is within a predetermined distance from the bottom of the power stroke. The second set of springs 80, 82, 84 and 86 is disposed between the bottom 230 of the cylinder 52 and a preload member 234. When the piston 70 approaches the bottom of its stroke, it contacts the preload member 234 which in turn compresses the springs 80, 82, 84, and 86 bringing the piston to a halt.
