Abstract: A band saw for an industrial band mill is hollow formed, preferably on both sides thereof, and substantially from edge to edge thereof. This hollow forming eliminates the need for prestressing the band saw by roll tensioning during its manufacture. Additionally, the band saw may be made thinner to reduce material costs and to result in a thinner saw cut, thereby reducing sawdust waste. Less friction between the band saw and the timber being cut reduces heat build-up, thereby improving the useful life and reliability of the band saw, and facilitating faster cutting rates for improved production efficiency. • Patent number: 4195541
Abstract: Apparatus for making holes in a web of photosensitive material which is transported in a copying machine has an electromagnet with a reciprocable armature connected to one leg of a U-shaped carrier. The other leg of the carrier supports a material removing tool which penetrates through the web when the electromagnet is energized. The carrier is held against wobbling by a ball bearing which is connected to its one leg and extends with minimal clearance between two parallel guide faces which are machined into a stationary holder for the electromagnet. The holder has a plate-like extension with a hole which receives the tip of the tool subsequent to penetration of such tip through the web. The tool is normally located at one side of the plane of the web, and the extension is located at the other side of such plane.

  • Patent number: 4103576
Abstract: A cross-cutting shear of the type where the nip formed between the blades travels in the direction of movement of the material being sheared is driven by a single crankshaft. The upper blade is attached to the crank portion of the crankshaft, and the sliding motion of the blade-carrying carriage is provided by cam discs mounted on the crankshaft and acting against rollers in a stationary frame. The crankshaft is journalled at each end in links pivotally attached to the bottom part of the blade carriage. The guide links are free to pivot independently of the blade carriage. By this construction, reaction loadings are prevented from being transmitted through to the stationary housing, when a shearing action is taking place.

  • Patent number: 4091701
Abstract: A cutting machine having a table on which multi-ply layups of sheet material are positioned during cutting operations utilizes a reciprocating cutting blade that is suspended in cantilevered fashion above the table and lowered into cutting engagement with the material during cutting. The sheet material and blade are moved relative to one another while the blade is oriented to remain tangent to predefined cutting paths followed through the material. A blade guide is mounted in a presser foot which slides over the material, and several guide rollers in the blade guide engage the sides and trailing edge of the blade to control blade positioning immediately above the sheet material.
