    Abstract: In an apparatus for cutting pattern pieces and creating apertures in sheet-type work material a frame has a support surface mounted thereon for carrying at least one layer of the work material. A carriage is coupled to the frame for movement back-and-forth there along a first coordinate direction in response to commands issued from a controller. A cutting head is mounted to the carriage and moves in a second coordinate direction along the carriage approximately perpendicular to the first coordinate direction. A rotary die is coupled to the cutting head and at least one cutting tool is mounted to the rotary die. The cutting tool includes a shaped cutting portion corresponding to the shape of an aperture to be formed in the work material. During operation the rotary die is movable between a working position wherein the cutting tool engages the work material and a non-working position wherein the rotary die is positioned away from the work material.

The punch is coupled to a punch holder which is configured to move vertically relative to a collar supported upon a base. A pipe support provides a preferred form of die to hold the pipe adjacent the punch. The pipe support includes a first edge, second edge, third edge and fourth edge which can be selectively presented for supporting the end of the pipe adjacent the punch. The first cutting edge and second cutting edge of the punch can be selectively provided for cutting the notch in the pipe. The punch and pipe support are preferably both reorientable to select various different edges for supporting and cutting the pipe.

    Abstract: A hand-held, manually operated book index notch cutter is placed in the book to be notched. The notch cutter has a cylindrical cutting member (405) which moves parallel to and rotates around its axis. The axis of the cylinder is perpendicular to the book leaves being notched. The cutting member rotates and advances within a cutter guide (200), which is attached to a thin baseplate (100). The upper surface of the baseplate is a resilient platen (102) on which rests the stack of book leaves to be cut. These leaves are adjusted in fan and lateral angle with the help of a leaf guide (300), which is movable to allow a range of notch depths. The cutting member is attached to a knob (401) which is pressed and turned. Inside this cutting member-knob assembly is a spring-loaded ejector assembly (500). After a notch is cut, the ejector button (501) is pressed, capturing the paper cuttings and raising the cutting member to the ready position.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for forming draw tape bags wherein the bag material moves continuously during the manufacture, except for the last step. The apparatus may be used with an in-line system wherein a tube is extruded and a side gusset is formed to create a hem; or the apparatus may be used with an off-line system wherein folded bag material is used, and a continuous hemmer is provided to turn the loose edges. In the off-line system a constant tension dancer precedes the hemmer to maintain constant tension on the web regardless of the size of the supply roll. The web continues to move, and a cutter is actuated to move through a circle and engage the web to punch finger holes in the hem. A reel of a strip of material is continuously fed, the strip being slit longitudinally to provide the draw tapes which are inserted into the hems. A tape guide tensions the tape and assures that the tape is well within the hem, the hems are sealed, and the bags are side welded.

The second drive is operable independent of the first drive to maintain the cutter at a speed sufficient to form notches in the back of the book regardless of the speed of movement of the cutter support disc.

In preferred forms, the slitter mechanism includes a bag-end separating assembly having a vacuum manifold and a cooperating adjacent deflector bar serving to separate end portions of the sidewalls of a moving tube. A sequentially rotatable blade is also provided which first enters the open end of the moving tube between separated wall portions, overtakes and slits the leading side margin of the tube, and then stops with a trailing slitting edge situated within the tube open end; subsequent bag movement causes the trailing tube side margin to engage and be slit by the stationary blade edge.

    Abstract: A rotary cutting apparatus for forming serially connected envelope blanks from a longitudinally advancing web of sheet material is provided with two rotary knives, both of which rotate into cutting relationship with the same stationary knife but at different times. The web of sheet material is advanced over the stationary knife so that at least one side of the web is positioned between the stationary knife and each of the rotary knives to remove a section at the side of the web. With two sets of rotary and stationary knives operating respectively on the two sides of the web, a series of interconnected envelope blanks can be formed by feeding the web through the cutting apparatus at a speed coordinated with the rotations of the knives. By adjusting the angular relationship of the two rotary knives with respect to one another about the axis of rotation, the section of sheet material removed from the advancing web can be varied correspondingly.
