  • Patent number: 4500042
Abstract: The knife is normally clamped tightly against a supporting arm by a retaining bolt, but when the bolt is sufficiently loosened, the bolt itself and the knife through which it passes may be forced radially inwardly or outwardly by shifting a transversely reciprocable slide plate in the appropriate direction along its path of travel. An oblique slot in the slide plate receives the bolt and pushes it in the selected adjusting direction as the slot is displaced transversely by shifting of the plate. A pair of counter-acting set screws serve as means for shifting the plate and for releasably retaining the same in a selected position. A long key on the slide plate slidably fits into a mating key way on the supporting arm to guide the plate in its transverse movement, and because the key extends transversely of the path of in-and-out adjusting travel of the knife, it helps absorb and resist radial loading on the knife which occurs during the cutting operation.

  • Patent number: 4155282
Abstract: A cutting mechanism includes a removably mounted backing roller having a longitudinal axis of rotation and a rotatably mounted cutting member having a cutting edge and a longitudinal axis of rotation disposed parallel to the axis of rotation for the roller member. The roller member rotates in a fixed relationship with respect to the cutting member so that the cutting edge operates at substantially the same surface location of the circumferential surface of the backing roller to cut film thereagainst upon each revolution of the cutting member. The roller member is mounted to resiliently float in a direction transverse to a plane extending through the axis of rotation for the cutting member. The drive of the rotating elements is effected through the use of a timing belt operating from the main drive of the machine on which the cutting mechanism is mounted.

  • Patent number: 4056022
Abstract: In a tobacco cutting machine where tobacco is cut by knives mounted on a rotating drum, the knives are advanced as they are worn away. In order to prevent the knives being advanced too far, and becoming damaged by contact with other machine parts, a safety device is provided. This includes a blade positioned near the path of the knife edges to be struck by a knife if the latter is advanced too far. The resultant movement of the blade is amplified by a lever system and is used to trigger a microswitch in the cutter drum drive circuit, whereby when a knife is advanced too far the cutter drum is stopped. The advancing mechanism for the knives includes a ratchet device driven by pulses of compressed air via a piston and cylinder device.
