Patent number: 6711979Abstract: The present invention provides a cutting method of a ceramic honeycomb formed body 5 for cutting the ceramic honeycomb formed body 5 with a fine line stretched at an appropriate tension substantially at right angles to the direction of throughholes 9 thereof. The method comprises the steps of providing a cutting guide groove 10 running through the outer periphery of the ceramic honeycomb formed body substantially at right angles to the direction of throughholes 9, and putting a fine line 2 to the cutting guide groove 10, to cut the ceramic honeycomb formed body 5 only by pressing the fine line 2 against the ceramic honeycomb formed body 5. By using this cutting method, it is possible to cut a ceramic honeycomb formed body having thin partition walls of under 125 &mgr;m without causing a distortion. The possibility to reduce the cutting frequency of the fine line leads to possibility to improve the cutting efficiency.Type: GrantFiled: June 7, 2001Date of Patent: March 30, 2004Assignee: NGK Insulators, Ltd.Inventors: Takashi Miyakawa, Yuji Ueda, Satoshi Sugiyama

Patent number: 6457468Abstract: The vertical blade saw assembly for ceramic and masonry materials is designed to provide an assembly that allows the user to make cuts of any shape to ceramic tiles and masonry materials in order to permit the installation of precision cuts for a particular setting. The assembly has an electric drive motor that is protected from the coolant used to keep the blade from overheating. The assembly has a plurality of parallel arms that are connected and permit the oscillating motion of the arms. The vertical blade is connected to the arms which place the blade in motion. The assembly has a base unit to provide support for the assembly. A coolant tray is positioned around the base unit. A water pump and accompanying tubing is used to circulate the coolant to the blade. Several cutting blades are also disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: April 27, 2000Date of Patent: October 1, 2002Inventor: Nicolas Goldberg

Patent number: 5924209Abstract: The saw includes a frame having an opening with a pair of proximate and distal blade retaining chucks located on respective sides of the opening. A saw blade is retained between the pair of chucks. A plurality of pulleys are attached in spaced relation to the frame including pulleys on opposed sides of the opening. A flexible band is entrained about each of the plurality of pulleys, with the band having a first end operatively connected to the proximate blade retaining chuck and a second end attached to the distal blade retaining chuck. A reciprocating drive is attached to the proximate blade retaining chuck. The reciprocating drive and the flexible band work in conjunction to pull the blade in opposite directions during each cycle of the drive. An alternative embodiment of the present invention may take the form of a stationary table saw.Type: GrantFiled: October 8, 1997Date of Patent: July 20, 1999Inventor: Troyse W. Ward

Patent number: 4222299Abstract: This invention relates to gang saws and other cutting apparatus having oscillating cutters for cutting workpieces into slices. The invention provides apparatus, having two elongate spaced apart cutter supports which are driven to oscillate 180.degree. out of phase with each other. Two sets of cutters are connected to the supports. For a suitable workpiece the cutters may be of a hot wire type. Each cutter of one set is connected to the first support by a resiliently extensible connector such as a spring and to the second support by a non-extensible connection. Each cutter of the other set is connected to the second support by a resiliently extensible connector and to the first support by a non extensible connection. Desirably the cutters of one set alternate with cutters of the other and all cutters are coplanar. Movement of cutters of each set in opposite directions tends to cancel the local influence of cutters on the workpiece.Type: GrantFiled: January 2, 1979Date of Patent: September 16, 1980Inventors: Peter Treffner, Charles Treffner
