  • Patent number: 4364294
Abstract: A horizontal power band saw having a frame fabricated of rigid weldments (as opposed to castings) thereby to appreciably lower the cost of the band saw. A system is disclosed for accurately pivotally mounting the saw head on the saw bed, for adjusting the pivotal axis of the head parallel to the bed, and for positively holding the head in desired relation with the bed so as to enable the head to be repeatedly and accurately raised and lowered while the blade of the saw is held in a plane generally perpendicular to the bed. The saw blade is tensioned in such a manner that a desired tension load can be accurately applied to the blade and so that the tension load on the blade can be accurately read out.

  • Patent number: 4283980
Abstract: Apparatus for sawing which can be used either in portable, manually operated form, or as a stationary bench-mounted sawing device for sawing through a workpiece along predetermined angles of cut. The apparatus comprises a portable chain saw which includes a prime mover secured to one side of a flat mounting plate. A saw blade guide plate projects from the prime mover through a slot provided in the mounting plate, and in a plane substantially normal to the plane of the mounting plate. A saw blade is extended around, and guided by, the guide plate, and is protected by guard means pivotally mounted on the mounting plate. A cradle frame structure releasably receives and clamps the mounting plate in a table sawing position when the chain saw is to be so used. A cradle frame pedestal pivotally supports the cradle frame structure for pivotation about a horizontal axis.

  • Patent number: 4275632
Abstract: A portable sawmill is provided in which a rigid straight channel support is placed on a floor or on the ground with one end slightly elevated. A pair of longitudinally spaced log supports are mounted in the channel piece at a distance corresponding to the length of a log to be placed thereon. A carriage with rollers is mounted to ride along the upturned edges of the channel piece and is adapted to roll by gravity from the elevated end of the channel piece to the lower end. The carriage includes a bandsaw driven by a low horse power motor and is equipped with a release mechanism for automatically disengaging the drive between the motor and the saw at the end of a cutting stroke. A jacking mechanism and adjustable shelves on the log supports are included for raising the log to a new height after each cut.

  • Patent number: 4245535
Abstract: A portable sawmill includes a log supporting mechanism for holding a substantially horizontal log. A chain saw with a substantially horizontal effective cutting edge at least as long as the log is supported at only one end by a saw mounting assembly with the cutting edge generally parallel to the axis of the log. The saw mounting assembly is adapted for lateral movement relative to the log, as well as upward and downward movement, so that the saw can be positioned beneath a portion of the log and moved upwardly through the log to cut wood slabs. The saw is pivoted to the saw mounting assembly so that the angle between the effective cutting edge and the axis of the log can be adjusted to produce elongated wood fibers during cutting. A pivoting mechanism is provided for rotating the log between cuts so that slabs tapered from one side to the other can be cut.

  • Patent number: 4208937
Abstract: Apparatus for accurately cutting logs and large timbers at selected angles with a chain saw is disclosed. The invention includes a base framework which works in combination with a support table. The base framework includes vertical rods mounted to the base framework. The bar of the chain saw is secured to guides which slide up and down on the rods. The chain saw and base framework combination are pivotally secured to the support table such that the chain saw blade can be positioned at various angles with respect to the log or other material being cut. Once the angle has been selected, the chain saw and base framework combination are secured to the support table such that the angle at which the logs are cut will remain constant as the saw is operated. One embodiment includes means for counter balancing the chain saw weight to aid in operation of the saw.

  • Patent number: 4048892
Abstract: A belt saw guiding device for a belt saw machine comprises a pair of guide pulleys, a pair of pulleys and a pair of guide rollers. The guide pulleys rotate on the respective axles extending vertically at the lower front right and left sides of a movable frame below which a work piece is to be placed. The pulleys are positioned at the upper rear right and left sides of the frame, respectively and rotate on the axles extending horizontally. Each of the guide rollers is inclined at an angle and arranged between the corresponding pulley and guide pulley. On the inclined guide rollers a belt saw is twisted so as to have its course changed while it runs, driven by the pulleys and the guide pulleys.

  • Patent number: 3952622
Abstract: A multiple-use portable band saw for mounting on a standard work shop type vice. The band saw blade and blade mounting are standard in the art and therefore, not described in detail. The band saw is mounted on a rotatable shaft and can be operated in either a generally vertical table saw position or a generally horizontal tilting saw position. The rotatable shaft forms a portion of the clamping structure which mounts the band saw onto the standard vice. The clamping structure includes a stabilizing tongue memeber to prevent the entire band saw structure from tipping during or after the horizontal cutting operation, a stop means to prevent the downward movement of the band saw beyond a predetermined position and an adjustable arm member to eliminate unwanted movement when the saw is used in either the vertical or horizontal position. In the vertical position, a removable work table is mounted onto the clamping structure itself. The table is positioned and supported by three leg type appendages.
