Abstract: A power tilt assembly for a band saw has a power tilt harp plate and a length of silent chain about the harp plate's perimeter. The chain is anchored to the harp plate at each end by a chain tensioner. The column of a blade carrying frame incorporates a tilt motor and a tilt motor shaft to drive a silent chain sprocket around a portion of which the silent chain is looped. A pair of idlers are used to maintain this portion of the silent chain in contact with the sprocket. As the tilt gear motor is actuated, the sprocket moves along the chain thereby moving the column of the blade carrying frame with it. A power tilt brake pad controls incremental movement of the column and a power tilt pointer indicates degree of tilt of the column and the corresponding angle of vertical cut to the machine operator.

  • Patent number: 7036411
Abstract: An active measurement and control system for a material cutting apparatus. The apparatus comprises a cutting tool which may be pivoted for cutting a workpiece in a cutting area at a selectable angle. The cutting area defines a datum plane, and a feed table with a shuttle vise is used to move the workpiece toward the cutting area. A controller controls the feed distance of the shuttle vise and the cutting angle of the tool in response to a signal from a sensor used for sensing a transverse dimension of the workpiece relative to the datum plane. In this way, the feed distance and cutting angle are adjusted to compensate for variations in the transverse dimension. This transverse dimension can include a displacement from the datum plane of a distal and/or proximate surface of the workpiece. A method of cutting a workpiece is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 5666872
Abstract: A tapering apparatus is mounted on a table platform for tapering a sheet of foam insulation. The apparatus utilizes a rotating wire through which a current is applied in order to heat the wire. The temperature of the wire is maintained above the melting temperature of the foam insulation so that the insulation is melt and cut as it is forced across the wire. A conductive wire forms an endless belt positioned around a pair of rotatable sheaves. The wire is responsive to the angular rotation of the drive sheave. The sheaves are vertically adjustable in order to set a desired height and cutting angle for the tapering of the sheet of insulation. The current flowing through the wire is controlled such that the wire is heated to a temperature above the melting point of the foam insulation. A variable speed motor is connected to the drive sheave which is used to rotate the wire about the sheaves. The sheet of foam insulation is then forced into the rotating wire.
