Patent number: 6202529Abstract: This invention is a safe, effective, attractive apparatus for slicing bread products such as bagels, bulkie rolls, and English muffins into two approximately equal sections. The invention is comprised of two primary components. The base unit (1) is essentially a rectangular block with a narrow slot (5) on either side of a cavity (3) that is open at the top and shaped to receive and center a bread product (12). The second component is a unique separate top block (2) that has an inverted slot (6) on the underside to receive a knife so that it is recessed from the underside of the top block. A knife is placed into the slot of the top block, and together they are placed into the chamber of the base unit, with the knife now guided by the slots on either side of the base unit. The top block is used to hold down the bread product to keep it from rotating, while keeping fingers safely away from the knife blade. The user draws the knife back and forth, and is able to cut easily through the bread product.Type: GrantFiled: June 9, 1999Date of Patent: March 20, 2001Inventor: Jerry Grant Hodsdon

Patent number: 5974935Abstract: An apparatus for variable length belt splitting includes a stepwise feeder which urges the belt, such as conveyor belt, forward in discrete steps and a reciprocating cutter disposed downstream from the feeder. The feeder preferably includes both a holding clamp and a feed clamp that is connected to, and is moved with respect to, the holding clamp by a feed actuator. The cutter preferably moves parallel to the holding clamp and is moved back and forth by a bi-directional ram. The cutter splits the belt edge to edge at a predetermined depth in length increments corresponding to the feeder's step length to a total length determined by the user. Optionally, the feeder and cutter are connected to a support structure which allows the feeder and cutter to be placed at an angle with respect to the path of the belt through the machine, thereby allowing for diagonal splits to be made with respect to the longitudinal axis of the belt without stewing of the belt.Type: GrantFiled: June 26, 1998Date of Patent: November 2, 1999Assignee: Belt Equipment, Inc.Inventors: John A. Willis, Adrian J. Willis, George H. Stoner, III, William J. Hayes, Jr.

Patent number: 5918517Abstract: An apparatus for cutting any one of blocks and panels of cellular plastics into various shapes. The cellular plastic is held on a stationary platform around which a movable frame is affixed to two slides. The movable frame moves on two horizontal rails to effect cutting in the x-direction. Cutting is done with a hot wire affixed to two slides which move together vertically on vertical rails along the moveable frame to effect cutting in the y-direction. Stepping motors are driven by a computer to provide for displacement of the hot wire. Each motor includes a pinion which is mounted on a shaft directly engaging gear-racks parallel to the rails, to effect cutting of various shapes defined by the equation y=f(x).Type: GrantFiled: November 21, 1996Date of Patent: July 6, 1999Assignee: Societe CromaInventors: Philippe Malapert, Jacques Crouet

Patent number: 5852877Abstract: A belt skiving apparatus and method in which a free-standing blade-carrying carriage is employed which does not require a guiding base. The carriage has a pair of rollers defining a nip into which a belt end to be skived is passed. The rollers press together about the belt end to securely grip the belt. One of the rollers is toothed to provide a non-slip engagement with the surface of the belt and at least one of the rollers is driven, preferably manually, through a crank arm. Rotation of the rollers advances the carriage relative to the belt to advance the carriage across the width of the belt. As the carriage is advanced, the belt is passed through the rollers and through a cutting blade disposed adjacent the rollers. As the carriage is advanced along the width of the belt, the blade slices a thin strip of the upper portion of the belt adjacent its upper face from the remainder of the belt. The thin strip that is removed is the portion of the belt that was punctured by the teeth of the driving roller.Type: GrantFiled: July 23, 1996Date of Patent: December 29, 1998Assignee: Flexible Steel Lacing CompanyInventors: David A.
