  • Patent number: 10656335
Abstract: A method for cleaving a fiber comprises rotating an actuator to apply a positioning force to a blade in a scoring assembly. The positioning force produces a score in the surface of a fiber, and the method further comprise applying a cleaving force to the fiber to cleave the fiber. The method can further include measuring the magnitude of the positioning force and rotating the actuator until the magnitude corresponds to a pre-determined magnitude. A cleaver comprises a scoring assembly, drive assembly, and a cleaving assembly. The scoring assembly includes a holder having one or more blades, and an actuator. The cleaving assembly secures a fiber in the scoring assembly. The drive assembly rotates the actuator to position one or more blades to score the surface of the fiber. The cleaving assembly applies a cleaving force to the fiber to cleave the fiber at the location of the score.

  • Patent number: 8997619
Abstract: A glass cutter is provided which can form, using a wheel, a uniform crack in glass even when a projection or an earlier-formed scribe line is present on the glass. When the wheel is moved on the glass, a fracture layer is formed causing a rib mark to be formed below the fracture layer and a crack to be formed below the rib mark. To cut the glass, the crack is required to be formed uniformly. Applying a force to resist the rotating force of the wheel makes it possible to form a uniform crack even when a projection is present on the glass. This improves glass cutting yield.

Abstract: A mechanical method for producing micro-scale and nano-scale textures that facilitates, for example, the cost-effective production of nanostructures on large-scale substrates, e.g., during the large-scale production of thin-film solar cells. A “scratcher” (multi-pointed abrasion mechanism) is maintained in a precise position relative to a target substrate such that micron-level features (protrusions) extending from the scratcher's base structure are precisely positioned to contact a surface material layer of the target substrate with a predetermined amount of force, and then moved relative to the substrate (e.g., by way of a conveying mechanism) while maintaining the pressing force such that the micron-level features define elongated parallel nano-scale grooves and/or form nano-scale ridges in the surface material layer (i.e., by mechanically displacing) portions of the surface material layer to form the nano-scale grooves/ridges).

The mandrel is insertable within the mesh cage to support and/or retain a portion of the mesh cage. The mandrel can also apply a force to the score mark to cleanly separate two portions of the mesh cage at the score mark.

The first and second surfaces have a strengthened surface layer under a compressive stress, and a central region under tensile stress. The method further includes applying a scoring blade to the first surface at an initiation location that is offset from the first edge by an initiation offset distance greater than a diameter of the scoring blade, and translating the scoring blade or the strengthened glass substrate such that the scoring blade scores the first surface. The translation is terminated such that the scoring blade stops at a termination location that is offset from the second edge of the strengthened glass substrate by a termination offset distance greater than the diameter of the scoring blade.

The tip holder 10 is attracted by a magnet for attachment so that detaching and attaching can be performed easily. Tip offset data is recorded as a 2-dimensional code 17 on the surface of the tip holder 10. When replacing the tip holder, the offset data is read out and inputted to a scribe device, thereby canceling the offset. The notches (2) are thereby formed to such depths, depending on the material, that as far as possible no sliding fractures are formed. The notches (2) are interrupted by unnotched regions—the mutual spacing of which in the respective notch (2) determines the later possible mesh width—at least in such a way that they later form network nodes (4). The network nodes (4) are offset by approximately half a network node spacing in the respectively adjacent notches (2).
