Abstract: A method for improving die-cutting involving first creating a back plate footprint, possessing impressions of the imperfections found in the cutting surface of a die-cutting machine. This method provides die-cutters a simple, inexpensive way to dramatically improve the alignment of die-cutting knives for making cuts. The method uses a malleable material that will readily receive an impression of imperfections of a cutting surface when some pressure is provided, but the material must also be capable of hardening into a useable solid material. The principles of this method may be applied to all die-cutting machines by making a back plate footprint of the die-cutter in question and by properly inserting it back into the chase where the impressions contained therein will press down on the material below it so as to better align the cutting knives of the die being used.

  • Patent number: 7244083
Abstract: A cutting head assembly for use in cutting plate glass has a simplified drive train, all positioned about the vertical rotational centerline. The drive train includes a hollow bore drive motor having a drive adaptor directly engaged with a spline shaft that extends through the hollow bore. The lower end of the spline shaft is directly engaged with a cutting tool holder for retaining a cutting tool. The drive motor imparts rotational movement to the cutting tool through the spline shaft and the cylinder imparts vertical movement to the cutting tool by vertical movement of the spline shaft.

  • Patent number: 7226405
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for forming a score line with a reverse kiss cut in a deformable material are provided. A method can include providing two plates, such as a die plate with a scoring rule thereon and a counter plate with an aligned corresponding recess with a knife edge positioned therein and protruding toward the scoring rule. When the die plate is advanced toward the counter plate, the deformable material is forced into the recess of the counter plate to form the score line and the knife simultaneously forms a cut or slit in the bottom surface of the deformable material to form a reverse kiss cut.

  • Patent number: 7168364
Abstract: A method and an apparatus are provided for marking a sheet-shaped workpiece using a marking tool. The marking tool is mounted in a punch holder of a punch press and a counter-support is fixed in place on a side opposite of a marking surface of the workpiece to be marked. The surface of the workpiece is marked by displacing the workpiece in its plane while engaging the marking tool with the workpiece. In one form, a support roller provides counter-support. In another form, an elastic element is cooperatively associated with the punch stroke of the punch press to translate an exactly defined contact pressure force between the tool tip and the workpiece to be marked.

  • Patent number: 7156011
Abstract: A channel cutting tool may include an arbor that connects to a rotating spindle of a machining tool or a similar spinning part of a machining tool. Two slot cutting blades may be fixedly mounted to the arbor. An inner washer may be fixedly mounted on the arbor between the cutting blades and establish the blade spacing. An outer washer may be rotationally mounted to the inner washer with a smaller thickness to facilitate rotation relative to the two cutting blades. The arbor rotates about a longitudinal rotation axis, which also may be the rotation axis for the cutting blades, the inner washer, and the outer washer. The outer washer functions as a depth-limiting safeguard for the channel cutting tool.

  • Patent number: 7059232
Abstract: A tamper indicating closure comprising a base wall and a peripheral skirt having an internal thread adapted to engage the threads of a container wherein a tamper indicating band is provided on the skirt by a plurality of circumferentially spaced bridges. The band includes portions adapted to engage an annular bead on the container. The bridges are formed by using a primary knife having an interrupted cutting edge to produce a circumferential score in the side wall of the closure leaving spaced connectors or bridges followed by using a secondary knife having a continuous cutting edge to provide a continuous external score line and an accurately dimensional radial thickness of the bridges. In a preferred method and apparatus, the closures engage the successive primary and secondary knives and are moved such that the closures roll relative to the knives.

Abstract: A cutoff apparatus includes a blade and an actuator, the actuator being operatively connected to the blade for selectively moving the blade in a rectilinear direction. A cutting block is disposed adjacent the blade, and the cutting block is positioned off-center with respect to a plane defined by the blade's rectilinear movement. A depth control mechanism is utilized for selectively controlling a degree of movement of the blade toward the cutting block. Operation of the actuator selectively causes the blade to move in the rectilinear direction thereby impacting the cutting block to an extent in accordance with the depth control mechanism.

In addition, a processing machine for carrying out the process is suggested as well as the use of the processing machine for the milling of a groove into a multilayered or composite material board.

  • Patent number: 6592703
Abstract: A method and an apparatus for cutting a laminate made of a brittle material and a plastic with a cutting tool is described. The plastic is heated up, thereby lowering its viscosity, at least in the region of a predetermined cutting line. A cutting tool is placed onto the plastic side of the laminate, the loading pressure being adjustable. By moving cutting tool relative to the laminate along the predetermined cutting line, the plastic is severed; at the same time the brittle material is scored, thereby inducing a mechanical stress. If appropriate, the mechanical stress along the cutting line is subsequently increased to exceed the rupture strength of the scored brittle material. A preferred application is the cutting of thin glass or glass-ceramic/plastic laminates.
