Within the spring return actuator, the output of nested torsion springs is transformed into various torque outputs, particularly constant torque outputs and increasing torque outputs. Spring output is transformed by eccentric spool and flexible element mechanisms or by four bar mechanisms through changes in leverage produced by varying torque arms. The output of a controlled actuator can be transformed into torque outputs which are decreasing, increasing, etc., using eccentric spool and flexible element mechanisms or using four bar mechanisms in order to produce a loadmatch to the valve load.

The geometry of the crank wheel, pitman arm, and rocking beam provides substantially constant, positional of the polish rod on the downstroke, with rapid positional occurring at peak polish rod velocity, which causes a longer downhole pump stroke because of the induced elongation of the sucker rod string.

    Abstract: A beam pump for use as a chemical injection pump in conjunction with a walking beam and having a pump shaft which is slidable within a pump body. The shaft is pivotally connected to a lever bar which is drivingly connected to the walking beam. A pivot support bar is semi-rigidly attached to the beam pump body and is pivotally attached to the lever bar. The semi-rigid attachment enables the pivot support bar to move slightly in order to maintain the vertical alignment of the pump shaft with respect to the pump body. Further guidance and sealing is provided by an O-ring seal which is made up of a solid lubricant material, a guide plug and a spring loaded seal ring and back up seal. The pump shaft and pump body surrounding said shaft are coated with a solid lubricant material. Further lubrication of the pump shaft is accomplished by lubrication passages within the pump body.

    Abstract: A subsurface well safety valve having a housing with a valve closure member which is controlled by a flow tube which includes an improved hydraulic actuating mechanism. The housing includes a cylinder with a straight portion and a curved portion which is adapted to receive hydraulic fluid from the surface and a piston is movable in the cylinder and connected to the flow tube for moving the flow tube to an open position. The piston includes a metal seal and a flexible portion connected to the top of the metal seal and the flexible portion is adapted to move through the curved portion of the cylinder. A valve and a valve seat are provided in the cylinder above the piston for sealing the hydraulic fluid from the well surface when the valve is open and for engaging and holding the flexible portion and the piston in the open position.

    Abstract: An apparatus for automatically crimping terminals to electric wires by a cooperation between a pressing punch driven through a press ram and a stationary anvil. The apparatus has a crimp height adjusting mechanism which includes a tapered spacer movable perpendicularly to the press ram, a stopper member having a complementary tapered surface and slidably placed on the tapered spacer so as to be able to move only vertically as the tapered spacer is moved. The stopper member has an upper surface adapted to be contacted by a portion of the press ram thereby determining the stroke end of the press ram. The tapered spacer is slidingly moved in a controlled manner by an electric motor, so that the heightwise position of the stopper member is changed to allow a delicate adjustment of the lower stroke end of the press ram. In consequence, the crimp height is automatically adjusted minutely in accordance with the diameter of the electric wire to be processed.

The pin interconnecting the wheels is received in one of a plurality of radially spaced pairs of openings to enable the stroke of the pump to be varied by varying the radial position of the pin in relation to the rotational axis of the wheels.

    Abstract: An extension and retraction system for a multiple section, telescoping boom apparatus of the type utilized for raising and lowering a work platform or basket. Extension chains trained about sprockets carried by certain of the sections automatically extend the other extensible sections upon extension by the cylinder assembly of the innermost longitudinally movable section. Automatic and positive retraction of such sections is accomplished by retraction chains operating in response to retraction of the innermost section. The cylinders of the dual cylinder assembly are pivotally coupled at a pivot mount longitudinally slidable along a guideway carried by the base section to thereby accommodate deflections of the boom sections located between the opposite extremities of the dual cylinder assembly.

    Abstract: My invention relates to pumping apparatus, particularly to a hydraulically-operated pump jack for oil, brine water and the like. The apparatus is fabricated from steel plate to make a strong, but light-weight tower which may be easily transported from one site to another by a small boom truck or gin pole truck. In contrast to pump jacks of the walking beam type which are massive in size, my improved pump jack is compact and is seated on and secured directly to the head of an oil well casing. A vertically-arranged hydraulic cylinder has its piston rod connected to a cross head on which a pair of sprockets are journalled. Chains pass around respective sprockets, one reach of each chain extending upwardly and is anchored to a stationary part of the tower. The other reach of each chain extends upwardly and over and around an upper sprocket journalled on a shaft carried by the upper end of the tower, each chain then extending downwardly to a yoke to which the polish rod is connected.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to a fail-safe actuator of the type in which a piston riding in a cylinder is urged toward a port end of the cylinder by an energy storage spring. The piston is prevented from moving toward the port end so long as liquid remains entraped between the piston and port end, movement of the piston toward the port end resulting in shifting of a cable and consequent rotation of a quadrant about which the cable is arrayed to rotate a shaft. A rolling seal diaphragm is interposed between the piston and cylinder whereby leakage is prevented over protracted use periods, and the piston is isolated from liquid between the port and piston. Optionally, an annulus disposed between the piston and cylinder bears against the roll seal portion of the diaphragm preventing extrusion or permanent distortion of the diaphragm under high pressure conditions.
