The dual piston assembly includes a primary and a secondary piston that, when included within an assembly housing, provide surfaces that may be acted upon by a pressurized fluid so as to drive a servo pin into and away from a band within the transmission. The dual piston assembly allows for the application of a high apply force to servo pin while reducing the pressure of both an apply fluid and a release fluid, and therefore the amount of power used by a fluid pump external to the transmission servo assembly. The transmission servo assembly also substantially eliminates band drag by balancing the pressure applied to surfaces of dual piston system and by providing a biasing member designed and configured to provide suitable initial and ending forces to dual piston system.

The contour of the protrusion, from the radially outside portion toward the radially inside portion, first approaches the outer end face and then departs from the outer end face. Therefore, the piston is light and strong.

Abstract: A ram actuating mechanism 20 for a blowout preventer 10, the ram actuating mechanism 20 including a hydraulic booster for enhancing the ram closing force. The ram actuating mechanism 20 may be compatible for use with primary pistons 25 which include internal moving components, such as self locking pistons. The ram actuating mechanism 20 providing a hydraulic booster without increasing the diameter of the booster pistons above the diameter of the primary piston, such that BOP stack height need not be increased to accommodate a relatively large diameter hydraulic booster. The ram actuating mechanism 20 may utilize the same piston housing 60 as used by the primary piston, and the booster pistons 26, 28 may act mechanically in series upon the primary piston 25 to increase axial ram closing force. The ram actuating mechanism 20 may be capable of retro-fitting existing ram actuating mechanisms.

  • Patent number: 5129311
Abstract: A piston assembly comprising a primary piston and a co-centric secondary piston. The pistons are received within a housing for reciprocating movement therein and relative to each other. The housing and the pistons are arranged for operating pressure to be applied to the secondary piston so as to drive both pistons within the housing. The secondary piston is provided with means enabling the operating pressure to be equalized across the secondary piston and at least one bypass passage extends through the secondary piston. The arrangement is such that upon completion of the stroke of the pistons pressure equalization occurs across the secondary piston which causes the pistons to separate. The bypass passage becomes fully operable subsequent to pressure equalization, whereby a fast return stroke is achieved.
