    Abstract: A process produces fibers from polymers which give off troublesome gases and/or vapors during spinning, comprising the steps of:a) extruding the molten polymer through a spinneret into a closed spinning shaft,b) quenching the resulting filaments in the spinning shaft with a gas,c) taking off the resulting filaments from the spinning shaft,d) conducting the quench gas away from the spinning shaft and introducing it into a gas purification system ande) purifying the used quench gas by contact with an adsorbent for said troublesome gases and/or vapors.It is possible by the present invention to keep hazardous gases occurring during the spinning of polymers away from the surroundings and to dispose of them. Suitable polymers are in particular polyphenylene sulfides.

    Abstract: An apparatus and process is provided for the production of hot mix asphalt (HMA) by the treatment of virgin material alone or adding reclaimed or recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) of up to 100% of the HMA comprised of reclaimed asphaltic pavement (RAP). The HMA is first heated in either a parallel or a counter flow rotating drum which is supplied with hot combustion gases generated by a remote low NO.sub.x burner. The temperature of hot gases entering the drum is from about 400.degree. to 2,000.degree. F., and the temperature of gases exiting from the drum is from about 130.degree. to 220.degree. F. The HMA material optionally can be subjected to microwave radiation to raise the material to a final temperature, or optionally to only reorient the dipolar molecules of the material without any measurable heating of the material. The exhaust gas is treated and made environmentally safe.

The corrugated structure provides very little pressure drop as the air passes through available channels and large, powerful fans are not necessary to move air therethrough.

    Abstract: This invention describes a process for regeneration of halocarbon bearing carbonaceous adsorbents through which a carbonaceous adsorbent is contacted with hydrocarbon gases, preferably propane, butane and pentane at near room temperatures and at atmospheric pressure. As the hydrocarbon gases come in contact with the adsorbent, the hydrocarbons displace the halocarbons by physical adsorption. As a result of using this process, the halocarbon concentration and the hydrocarbon eluant is increased thereby allowing for an easier recovery of pure halocarbons. By using the process of this invention, carbonaceous adsorbents can be regenerated by an inexpensive process which also allows for subsequent re-use of the recovered halocarbons.

The gas may be treated with this iodine-and/or inorganic iodide-supporting activated honeycomb 6 and an acid-supporting activated carbon honeycomb 7. A fan 8 may be provided in a downstream position within the gas passageway. The operation of the fan may be associated with a sensor for detecting malodorous/harmful components and/or a timer which controls the operating duration of a motor. The above activated carbon honeycomb will eliminate various malodorous/harmful substances, such as ammonia and sulfur-containing compounds, with high efficiency and low flow resistance. The activated carbon honeycomb can be used for the treatment of a variety of gases and is particularly useful for the deodorization of toilets.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a process for cleaning a stream of crude gas and/or waste gas charged with hydrocarbon vapors resulting in recovery of the hydrocarbons. The process consists of adsorption, desorption, and condensation and/or absorption, and the adsorption is accomplished in two two-stage adsorber systems connected to each other in parallel. A charged stream of gas is first directed to the first adsorber system for coarse cleaning by a primary adsorber (2) and then for precision cleaning to a secondary adsorber (4) connected in series to the first adsorber. The hydrocarbons adsorbed in the primary adsorber (2) are desorbed by use of a vacuum pump (26) and the hydrocarbon vapors depleted of inert gas that are obtained are recovered in the condensation and/or absorption system (24) after compression in the vacuum pump (26) and the hydrocarbon components that are not condensed or absorbed are returned to the stream of crude gas.

    Abstract: The light alcohol component of exhaust gases from such commercial operations as paint spraying booths and printing presses is found to be selectively adsorbed, even under high relative humidity conditions, to a surprisingly high degree using bonded high-silica zeolite agglomerates which have been calcined only once to remove the organic templating agent present in the as-synthesized form of the zeolite. Under certain conditions of alcohol concentration and relative humidity, the capacity of the once-calcined zeolite for alcohol adsorption is nearly twice as great as the same zeolite which has been calcined more than once at temperatures high enough to decompose and remove the organic moieties.
