Patent number: 8506686Abstract: A reel-to-reel aerosol collection and storage system for capturing and storing a plurality of separate samples of aerosol particles using electrostatic precipitation technology for collecting such particles onto a tape mechanism for analysis at a future time. The particles are collected onto a region of the collection tape for a defined period of time and then that portion of the collection tape is advanced out of the collection zone and manipulated so as to form sealed pouches or pockets which can be either severed from the collection tape for individual storage in a temperature controlled storage container, or which can be stored on a take-up reel in a temperature controlled environment. The collected aerosol particles are stored with a buffer fluid to preserve and maintain the viability of the collected particles for future extraction and analysis. Several embodiments for forming sealed pouches or pockets and methods of storing the collected particles are disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: February 2, 2011Date of Patent: August 13, 2013Assignee: Midwest Research Institute, Inc.Inventors: Joseph M. Patent number: 8241398Abstract: The invention provides methods and apparatuses for removing aerosols and, in some cases, vapor phase contaminants, such as mercury, from a gas stream. One method is directed to the removal of additional aerosols from a gas stream from which aerosols have previously been removed by using a screen in combination with a primary aerosol collection device. Another method is directed to the removal of both aerosols and vapor phase contaminants by using a sorbent in combination with a screen. Another method is directed to the removal of vapor phase contaminants by using a catalyst to convert the contaminant to a form that is more easily removed from the gas stream and optionally injecting a chemical to increase the rate of conversion. The invention also provides various apparatuses for use in performing the various methods of the invention.Type: GrantFiled: April 22, 2010Date of Patent: August 14, 2012Assignee: Electric Power Research Institute, Inc.Inventors: Mark Simpson Berry, Ramsay Chang

Patent number: 7708803Abstract: The invention provides methods and apparatuses for removing additional aerosols and in some cases additional particulate matter from a gas stream, wherein a certain portion of such aerosols and particulate matter has already been removed using a primary aerosol and particulate collection device. In some embodiments, the invention includes a method for removing additional aerosols from a gas stream, including passing a gas stream having a plurality of aerosols through a gas duct; removing a first portion of the plurality of the aerosols using a primary aerosol collector; passing the gas steam through a screen; collecting at least a second portion of the plurality of aerosols on the screen; and cleaning a portion of the screen outside of the gas duct. The invention also provides various apparatuses for use in performing the method of the invention.Type: GrantFiled: November 3, 2006Date of Patent: May 4, 2010Assignee: Electric Power Research Institute, Inc.Inventors: Mark Simpson Berry, Ramsay Chang

Patent number: 6958088Abstract: A carbon separation and collection device used for a high performance dust collector includes a water supply tube, a water pump, a high pressure negative electrode discharge device, a high pressure positive electrode discharge device, a rotary brush, a removing plate, a carbon collector, a liquid tank, and a speed change device and an exhausting tube. The two discharge devices serve to achieve a function of electrolyte. When the cleaning liquid with carbon flows into the water supply tube by using the water pump. The carbon is adhered to the high pressure positive electrode discharge device. The high pressure positive electrode discharge device is driven to rotate by the speed change device. The carbon is moved from the high pressure positive electrode discharge device by the rotary brush and removing plate. Then, the removing carbon drops into the carbon collector.Type: GrantFiled: September 27, 2004Date of Patent: October 25, 2005Inventor: Toshio Moriyama

Patent number: 6648948Abstract: A high performance dust collector has a main body. The main body includes a suction tube, a discharging electrode, a discharging plate, a dust accumulating electrode, and an exhaust tube. When exhaust gas from the burnt light or heavy diesel oil enters into the suction tube, since the exhaust gas passes through the discharging electrode and the discharging plate with negative charges, the coal particles in the exhaust gas become anions. When the waste gas passes through the metal net transfer belt, the coal particles with anions will adhere to the metal net transfer belt since the dust accumulating electrode is connected to a positive voltage end. Thereby, air exhausted from the exhaust tube has been cleaned and thus has no coal particles.Type: GrantFiled: June 20, 2002Date of Patent: November 18, 2003Inventor: Toshio Moriyama

Patent number: 4141732Abstract: A method of preparing color separated font characters and components in which positive proofs of the characters of the font intended for color printing are arranged by rows in linear spaced relation with the color components of each character of the font disposed one above the other on a flat plane in predetermined spaced relation. The color separated components and characters of the font are then printed on a transparent film for subsequent transfer of selected characters of the font to a layout sheet for photographic reproduction and forming plates or engravings to be printed in two or more colors.Type: GrantFiled: July 28, 1977Date of Patent: February 27, 1979Inventor: Thomas L. Byers

Patent number: 4116694Abstract: A method of preparing color separated components and characters of a film strip type font in registration for photo composition. Positive proofs of the characters of a type font adaptable for multicolor printing are arranged in linear spaced relation. An overlay strip is formed for each supplementary color component of the type font characters to be printed. The several linear strips are arranged on a flat plane in superposed identically spaced parallel relation. A single negative film strip is formed from the assembled character and component strips for contact printing on photo sensitive paper of selected characters and components on the negative film.Type: GrantFiled: March 23, 1977Date of Patent: September 26, 1978Inventor: Thomas L. Byers

Patent number: 4111696Abstract: A method of visually portraying an image of an assumed scene comprising portions of each of a plurality of scenes. Photographs, preferably in the form of transparent slides, are made of a relatively large number of diverse scenes. Portions are selected from each of two or more slides for combination to form the assumed scene. The composite scene is recorded in a single photograph by making repeated exposures of a single frame of film as the images are sequentially projected with their corresponding masks positioned on the viewing surface. All except the selected portions are covered by opaque masks as the individual images are projected sequentially on the single viewing surface.Type: GrantFiled: January 29, 1976Date of Patent: September 5, 1978Inventor: Jerome Sirlin

Patent number: 3969022Abstract: A system is disclosed for producing a colored-motion picture film from a black-and-white source film. Each frame of the black-and-white film is projected as an image onto a work surface to which colors are applied within selected areas for combination with the projected black-and-white image to provide a color composite. The color composite is then photographed with color sensitive film. The black-and-white film is processed frame-by-frame, preserving registration from one frame to the next (in a sequence) with the colored format which is accordingly modified to a limited extent to produce each composite that is photographed.Type: GrantFiled: March 9, 1971Date of Patent: July 13, 1976Inventor: Deloy J. Patent number: 3953210Abstract: A film coated with a dispersion of an N-vinyl compound, an organic halogen compound and a sensitizer in gelatin is preheated at 60.degree.-120.degree.C before an imagewise exposure to sensitize the film and to destroy fog-nuclei. After the imagewise exposure the film is subjected to a red light flood exposure for intensifying latent image, heating for development and flood light exposure for fixing to give a negative image of high contrast. The preheating may be applied to a film once exposed to extinguish the resulting latent image and thereby to be subjected to another exposure.Type: GrantFiled: July 23, 1974Date of Patent: April 27, 1976Assignee: Matsushita Electric Industrial Company LimitedInventors: Katsue Hasegawa, Reiji Sano, Shirow Askawa, Shunsuke Matsuda
