Abstract: A system according to one embodiment includes a magnetic pole; a bump structure above the pole, the bump structure having a first surface oriented at a first angle between 1° and 89° from a plane of deposition of the pole, and a second surface oriented at a second angle between 1° and 89° from the plane of deposition of the pole, wherein the second angle is greater than the first angle; and a shield above the bump structure. A method according to one embodiment includes forming a bump layer above a magnetic pole; removing a portion of the bump layer for forming a step therein; and milling the bump layer for defining thereon a first surface oriented at a first angle between 1° and 89° from a plane of deposition of the bump layer, and a second surface oriented at a second angle between 1° and 89° from the plane of deposition of the bump layer, wherein the second angle is greater than the first angle.

Abstract: Perpendicular-magnetic-recording head with leading-edge taper of a planarized stepped-pole layer having greater recess distance than a flare point of a main-pole layer. The perpendicular-magnetic-recording head includes a write element including the main-pole layer having the flare point recessed a first distance from a pole tip of the main-pole layer at an air-bearing surface below the air-bearing surface. The write element includes the stepped-pole layer magnetically coupled with the main-pole layer across an interface between the main-pole layer and the stepped-pole layer. The stepped-pole layer has the leading-edge taper recessed a second distance from the pole tip of the main-pole layer at an air-bearing surface below the air-bearing surface. The second distance of the leading-edge taper is greater than the first distance of the flare point.

Abstract: A head for a hard disk drive that includes a primary read element and a first sensor read element coupled to a head body. The first sensor read element is offset from the primary read element. The first sensor read element provides a read signal that can be analyzed to determine a pitch of the head. The head may also have a second sensor read element that is offset from the first sensor read element. The second sensor read element provides a read signal that can also be analyzed to determine a pitch of the head. Read signals of the first and second sensor read elements can be analyzed to determine a roll of the head.

Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention provide a magnetic head for perpendicular magnetic recording, and a magnetic disk apparatus capable of preventing data erasure caused by alignment marks. In an embodiment, the magnetic head includes a head element including at least a main pole having a pole face on a flying surface and an auxiliary pole; alignment marks made of a magnetic material and used to detect the amount of lapping work when lapping the pole face of the main pole; and members made of a magnetic material, continuously extending in either direction with respect to the position of the main pole from within the alignment marks outward at least beyond the alignment marks.
