Abstract: If a defective cluster in a spare area is managed with a defect entry, the size of a DFL will increase as the size of the spare area increases with an increase in the number of recording layers stacked in a disc. An information recording medium according to the present invention has pointer information indicating the location of the next available cluster in each spare area, and restricts the direction in which the spare area is used. Also, a defect entry indicating a defective cluster in the spare area is registered with the DFL. Thus, even if the size of the spare area 15 increases, the size of the DFL 21 can be kept relatively small. Furthermore, even after physical reformatting is done, a defective cluster, if any, in the spare area 15 can still be recognized as a defect and the control operation can be performed so that a replacement cluster is not re-allocated to that defective cluster (i.e., the defective cluster is not used).

Abstract: An object of the present invention is to provide an optical information recording medium suited for high-density and high-speed recording using a recording wavelength of 360 to 450 nm, in particular, around 400 nm (for example, 405 nm) and its recording method. The present invention is based not on a conventional High to Low method but on a Low to High method and, when the reflectance of the pit is higher than that of the non-pit area, the maximum film thickness of the recording layer at the track area where the pits are arranged is in the range from 25 to 60 nm and the maximum film thickness of the recording layer at the area adjacent to the track area is in the range of 5 to 30 nm, a satisfactory push-pull signal can be obtained. Further, the film thickness of the reflecting layer is preferably set in the range from 120 to 180 nm, and groove width of the reflection layer is preferably set in the range from 85 to 150 nm.

Abstract: A configuration for reading out disc management information easily without errors from a disc in which recording is conducted with data recording densities of a plurality of kinds. An optical disc includes a plurality of data recording areas in which information is recorded with data recording densities which are different from each other. Information of the data recording densities in the data recording areas is recorded in a management information recording area (a BCA area or a PIC area) by using a unique format which does not depend upon the data recording densities of the data recording areas. The divided data recording areas are disposed in the same plane of the disc, or disposed over a plurality of recording layers.
