  • Patent number: 4576338
Abstract: The spray tip of a diesel fuel injector, downstream of a conventional pressure actuated injector needle valve, includes a plug holder used to support and retain a hollow inner plug valve element, containing a number of radial through orifices communicating with an annular groove in the outer peripheral surface of the plug valve element and an outer hoop valve element with a hoop-skirt valve encircling the inner plug valve element. A shrink-fit exists between the hoop-skirt valve and the inner plug valve element to provide for a zero sac volume spray tip. The hoop-skirt valve operates as an integral hoop valve which is expanded relative to the inner plug valve element when supplied with high pressure fuel to form therewith a fuel discharge annulus.

  • Patent number: 4572436
Abstract: An electromagnetic fuel injector is provided with a tapered armature valve plate operatively positioned by means of a locator so that it is arranged so as to, in effect, pivot from a spring biased position at which it seats against a valve seat associated with a plurality of orifice discharge passages located concentrically about the axis of the injector to a second position adjacent to the working surface of the pole piece means of the associate solenoid. Preferably, the electromagnetic fuel injector is of the bottom feed type whereby it can be supplied with fuel in excess of the amount to be injected, with the flow path of fuel being arranged so that the excess fuel will purge vapors from the injector and cool the solenoid coil therein.

  • Patent number: 4571133
Abstract: A loading washer assembly includes an annular first washer provided with spaced apart ears on its outer peripheral edge with each of the ears having a return bent portion at its free end, an annular second washer provided with spaced apart notches on its outer peripheral edge for slidably receiving the ears whereby to prevent relative rotation of said washers, the return bent portions of the ears limiting the axial extent of separation of these washers. Each of the washers on their opposed surfaces have circumferentially spaced apart, radial extending raised ribs with the ribs on the first washer rotatively offset from the ribs on the second washer. A normally flat spring ring is interposed between the first washer and the second washer in position so as to be engaged by the opposed sets of ribs whereby the spring ring will be deformed into a wave-like spring upon axial displacement of the first washer toward the second washer.

  • Patent number: 4568021
Abstract: An electromagnetic unit fuel injector for use in a diesel engine includes a housing with a pump therein defined by an externally actuated plunger reciprocable in a bushing and defining therewith a pump chamber open at one end for the discharge of fuel to a spring biased, pressure actuated fuel injection nozzle. The pump chamber is also connected to a supply/spill chamber via a normally open, hollow, ported valve controlled passage to permit the ingress and egress of fuel, the valve being operated by a solenoid. The stator assembly of the solenoid is fixed to the housing over the supply/spill chamber and has a cover fixed thereto to define an armature chamber for a moveable armature. The solenoid pole piece has a stepped bore therethrough to interconnect the armature chamber and the supply/spill chamber. The armature is operatively connected to the valve by a guide pin slidably and sealingly journaled in a non-magnetic bushing fixed in the stepped bore so that the armature chamber remains dry.

  • Patent number: 4502278
Abstract: An exhaust cleaner and multi-point burner system for a diesel engine has a burner device with concentric first and second sets of circumferentially spaced apart point igniters facing the inlet end face of a particulate filter to effect multiple points of ignition of the particulates collected thereon, and a central point igniter to serve as a pilot light, supplied with an air/fuel mixture by a first supply conduit and a solenoid valve controlled supply conduit, respectively. The arrangement is such that the air/fuel mixture to the sets of point igniters is ignited using a single central electric igniter, such as a spark plug to ignite the air/fuel mixture supplied to the central igniter. Once all points are ignited, the solenoid valve is closed, thus increasing the flow of the air/fuel mixture to the sets of point igniters. This change in flow reduces heat losses and minimizes air/fuel requirements to effect ignition of the particulates.
