  • Patent number: 4485969
Abstract: An electromagnetic unit fuel injector for use in a diesel engine includes a housing with a pump therein defined by an externally actuated plunger reciprocable in a bushing and defining therewith a pump chamber open at one end for the discharge of fuel to a spring biased, pressure actuated fuel injection nozzle. The pump chamber is also connected to a first chamber via a solenoid actuated, normally open, hollow pressure balanced poppet valve controlled passage to permit the ingress and egress of fuel. The first chamber adjacent to one end of the valve is in flow communication with a second chamber at the opposite end of the valve and these chambers are connected to a drain passage and supply passage, respectively. During a pump stroke, the solenoid can be energized to move the valve in position to block flow from the pump chamber to the first chamber so as to allow the pressurization of fuel by the pump to effect discharge of fuel from the injection nozzle.

  • Patent number: 4423841
Abstract: An electromagnetic fuel injector includes an armature stop member, providing a flat surface with the lower body portion being of semi-spherical configuration, which is pivotably positioned in a conforming ball socket provided in the free end of an armature so that the flat surface extends outboard of the armature whereby it can abut against an associate pole piece to provide for a fixed minimum air gap between the pole piece and armature. In the event of any slight skewness between the axis of the pole piece and the reciprocating axis of the armature, the armature stop member will pivot, as necessary, to effect parallelism of the flat surface thereof with the flat working surface of the pole piece.

  • Patent number: 4412519
Abstract: The reciprocating plunger reciprocable in the pump cylinder of a distributor type diesel fuel injection pump is helically splined to an index ratchet gear that is also operatively associated with a pawl detent whereby the index ratchet gear is rotatable in only one direction. The plunger has a discharge slot on its outer peripheral surface which registers with one of the plural discharge ports opening from the pump cylinder and the plunger controls the covering and uncovering of a fuel inlet port to the pump cylinder. Upon a pump stroke of the plunger, the index ratchet gear is rotated so that the next adjacent tooth is brought into alignment with the pawl detent to then prevent its rotation in the opposite direction during the suction stroke of the plunger. With the index ratchet gear thus fixed, the plunger is thus rotated on the suction stroke so as to align the discharge slot with the next adjacent discharge port.
