  • Patent number: 4221389
Abstract: Game apparatus for a game which has a board representing a battlefield divided into a plurality of spaces to receive game pieces. The spaces are in a rectangular grid having a first pair of oppositely disposed margins having adjacent spaces representing trenches, and a second pair of oppositely disposed margins having adjacent spaces representing gun positions. Gun pieces located in the gun positions are oriented before firing so that their range is unknown to the opponent and pairs of guns can be interchanged before the guns have been fired, which is a realistic representation of a battlefield situation. Some spaces on the board are designated as being within range of a particular type of gun and tank pieces moving along the board from one trench towards the other trench are subjected to gun fire from an opponent's guns, if he so desires, when positioned on a particular space within range of a particular gun.

  • Patent number: 4219210
Abstract: An auxiliary trailer for towing behind a tractor and main trailer combination adapted to carry an elongated self supporting load. A forward end of the load is carried on a bunk on the tractor, and the bunk that normally supports the aft end of the load is removed and fitted on a turntable of the auxiliary trailer. A lower portion of the turntable fitted on the main trailer receives a complementary forward portion of the auxiliary trailer and the load now extends between bunks fitted on the tractor and the auxiliary trailer, the main trailer serving merely to support a forward end of the auxiliary trailer and to transmit turning forces to the auxiliary trailer. In this manner, the number of load bearing axles and spacing between the axles is increased, thus increasing capacity of the vehicle. Normal onboard load measuring gear is adaptable to indicate vehicle load. Equivalent structure for coupling the auxiliary trailer to the main trailer can be substituted for the turntables.

  • Patent number: 4187173
Abstract: Reverse osmosis, particularly for water desalination, is achieved using semipermeable membranes which selectively permeate purified water from a feed solution pressurized by reciprocating piston or diaphragm pump. Pump action is assisted by returning pressurized concentrate fluid acting on reverse side of the pump piston or diaphragm. Directional valves controlling alternating admission and venting of concentrate fluid to and from pump cylinder are actuated mechanically by reversal of force applied to the piston rod. Mechanical dwell is provided in the piston or diaphragm motion during directional valve actuation. Pump may be operated by a manual lever or by a crank mechanism on a low speed rotary shaft. An optional differential surge absorber provides continuity of feed solution circulation past membrane surfaces during the return pump stroke, thus minimizing detrimental salt concentration build-up on the membranes.

  • Patent number: 4184581
Abstract: Loading apparatus having vehicle body, inclined conveyor assembly extending upwardly and rearwardly from front of vehicle body, and hopper adjacent front of vehicle to direct material onto conveyor. Apparatus has extendable excavating assembly including a guide mounting a carrier which carries a hoeing assembly. The guide is mounted on vehicle body, and the carrier means cooperates with the guide for movement parallel to movement of conveyor when viewed from above. The hoeing assembly is carried on carrier means to be generally adjacent the hopper to draw material onto hopper for feeding onto conveyor. Carrier and guide can be carriage mounted on rails, or telescoping ram arrangement to provide extendable mount for hoeing assembly which increases reach thereof without requiring excessively long arms, and also facilitates operation of hoeing assembly for drawing material onto the hopper. Operator is positioned at front of vehicle for good visibility during operation of hoeing assembly.

  • Patent number: 4171586
Abstract: A purse seine hairpin retainer and purse ring handling method which simplifies and lessens the danger involved in collecting and securing the purse rings that are attached to the base of a fish net used in a seining operation for catching fish. The purse rings are threaded by a purse line which is hauled in toward the boat thereby gathering the purse rings together in a closely grouped arrangement and closing the bottom of the net. The purse rings are then threaded onto the lower leg of a hairpin member which is generally hauled up and temporarily suspended over the deck of the boat while upper end of the net is hauled in and the fish removed therefrom.

  • Patent number: 4164993
Abstract: Air cooled brake disc having first and second disc-shaped face portions with each face portion having an outer braking surface and an inner surface. A plurality of radially disposed webs extend between the face portions from an inlet adjacent an inner portion of the disc to an outer portion of the disc, the webs defining with inner surfaces of the face portions radially extending cooling passages within the disc. A plurality of radially disposed cooling fins extend from opposite inner surfaces of each passage. Sums of cross sectional areas of inner and outer cooling passage portions defined in part by the cooling fins are generally equal to reduce air flow velocity variations within the cooling passages. In one embodiment, a clearance space extends between opposed edges of the fins adjacent a central diametrical plane of the disc.

  • Patent number: 4155409
Abstract: Reversible puller for quickly pulling drill rods from, or for re-inserting drill rods into, drill hole. Rock drill has drill head mounted on feed carriage, drill head including rod rotating structure for rotating drill rod when in drilling mode. Rod puller includes drive wheel and idler wheel mounted for rotation with peripheries adapted for engagement with drill rod. Drive wheel is coaxial with, and rotates with, rod rotating structure and idler wheel cooperates with drill head for movement relative to drive wheel to permit idler wheel to be positioned so as to be essentially coplanar with drive wheel with wheel axes parallel. Drill head is swivellably mounted on carriage to permit drill head to be positioned in rod pulling mode wherein wheel axes are disposed generally normally to drill rod axis and periphery of drive wheel is spaced closely adjacent drill rod. • Patent number: 4155682
Abstract: Fluid propulsive device for accelerating flow of fluid passing through the device, for pumping fluid, or solids carried in fluid, or for propelling the device through fluid. The device has a main body having a duct provided with primary and secondary jet means adapted to receive working fluid under pressure. The jet means extend peripherally around the duct generally within planes normal to duct central axis and direct conical sprays of working fluid downstream into the duct. Primary jet means sprays working fluid initially at a conical semi-angle of between 18.degree. and 30.degree. so as to converge inwards initially towards a theoretical apex of the cone of the spray adjacent the duct central axis. Secondary jet means disposed downstream of the primary jet means within plane containing theoretical apex sprays fluid initially at angle of between 6.degree. and 10.degree. to duct side wall.
