  • Patent number: 4131108
Abstract: Andiron for supporting logs on a hearth in two primary fuel banks disposed in an inverted V-position to form triangular opening facing room to be heated. Andiron has horizontal baffle member supported above and between spaced positioning members by frame means. Baffle member and positioning members on each side of andiron are positioned so that primary fuel banks extend between edges of baffle member and positioning members so as to be inclined at particular angles with banks almost touching at apex. Secondary fuel placed between lower ends of primary fuel banks when ignited cooperates with primary fuel to form a concentrated, triangular-sectioned combustion zone of essentially uniform temperature defined by burning faces of primary and secondary fuel. Primary fuel burns mostly on inner faces with negligible burning of outer faces which reduces convection losses up the chimney.

  • Patent number: 4127154
Abstract: Tree harvesting apparatus adapted to be fitted to conventional vehicle for use in relatively hilly terrain. The apparatus has holding and cutting means including a main post carrying upper and lower grapples to hold tree, and cutting means disposed below the lower grapple. Post is mounted on a hinge mounting carried on vehicle for swinging relative to vehicle about a generally vertical cutting position. Hinge mounting permits forward and backward tilting movement relative to the vehicle, and sideways tilting means permits similar relativesideways tilting movement so that grapples can cooperate with tree notwithstanding uneven terrain. Main post can slide transversely relative to vehicle to provide lateral movement of grapples. Cutting means has sliding knife blade which cooperates with opposed anvil having recessed inner face to accept knife blade. Bunk carried on vehicle behind the driver's cab accepts cut log from grapples when post is swung to inclined unloading position in which bunk is beneath the log.

  • Patent number: 4121697
Abstract: Caliper brake assembly using a cam structure to actuate brake shoes to permit selection of a wide range of braking forces and to increase design flexiblity. The assembly has a frame journalling a pair of opposed arms with opposed brake shoes hinged adjacent opposed inner ends of the arms to brake a disc sandwiched between the shoes. The cam structure includes a cam member having a cam surface which cooperates with a brake actuator so that the cam surface is displaced by the actuator. A pair of cam followers cooperate with the respective arms and the cam surface during brake actuation to rotate each arm about a respective hinge axis relative to the frame so as to force the shoes against the disc. In one embodiment the cam member is displaced parallel to the hinge axes and each cam follower includes a swivellably mounted roller to accommodate swinging of the arms. In an alternative embodiment, the cam has double-acting wedges in which the actuator effectively floats between the arms.

  • Patent number: 4117620
Abstract: A release device for deadfall traps of the type having a load line for supporting a deadfall in a raised position, the device having a load line engaging arm swingably mounted on a body which is maintained in an engaging position by engagement with a movable detent member the latter being held in a set position by a movable trigger. When the trigger is moved out of engagement with the detent member by the detent members swings away from the arm and allows the latter to swing to the release position to thereby release the load line and allow the deadfall to drop.

  • Patent number: 4108285
Abstract: Pneumatic caliper brake actuator having diaphragm, piston member and cylinder body. Cylinder body has outer portions having clearance recesses therein to accept the outer ends of arms carrying brake shoes. At least two return compression springs extend between the piston member and outer portion of cylinder body, the springs having outer ends straddling the clearance recess and inner ends against piston member to retract piston when fluid pressure is reduced. The clearance recesses are hollow projections positioned off-center and symmetrically relative to outer portion of cylinder and spaced apart to accept arm outer end therebetween and accept outer ends of the return springs therein to restrict lateral movement of springs. Overall dimension across outer faces of projections on opposite sides of the cylinders is approximately equal to an overall dimension across the outer portions of the opposed arms.

  • Patent number: 4097562
Abstract: Carburetor for mixing air and fuel for internal combustion engines having fuel spray tube extending into throat to produce air/fuel mixture for combustion. Valve assembly has two similar sliding gate valve members which slide transversely across throat equal amounts in opposite directions and cooperate with tube. Fuel metering means coupled to valve members meters flow of fuel through fuel spray tube in amounts proportional to valve opening. In preferred embodiment spray tube has air bleed and discharge jet means spaced along tube which communicate with mixing manifold within tube and are closed concurrently by valve members as valve members approach each other. • Patent number: 4067294
Abstract: Tape and adhesive dispenser having adhesive-containing hopper with tape inlet and outlet openings adjacent lower wall of the hopper. Roll of tape is supported so that run of tape passes between openings and along upper surface of lower wall and collects adhesive thereon. Outfeed platform extends outwardly from outlet opening and has spaced edge guide means to restrain opposite margins of tape as tape passes along platform. Tape restrainer is mounted for rotation in direction of feed of tape above platform so that a lowermost portion thereof is spaced closely from the platform to permit tape to pass between platform and restrainer. The restrainer has clearance so that minimal adhesive is removed from tape as it passes beneath the restrainer. The restrainer is cylinder carrying pair of thin spaced discs, positioned adjacent central portion of tape to provide restraint at tape center. Two embodiments of self-threading means permit easy threading of tape.

  • Patent number: 4067425
Abstract: Clutch apparatus having a drum having an inner annular clutching face adapted to be secured to the crank shaft of an engine for rotation therewith. A hollow drive shaft centered within the drum carries a plurality of radially movable clutch shoes which are normally urged inwards to a disengaged position by means of an annular tension spring and are moved radially outwards against the tension spring by means by a linearly movable conical wedge which is grooved to accept round-ended stems extending from each of the clutch shoes and which is normally spring-urged into engagement with the shoe stems to move the shoes into clutching engagement with the drum against the action of the coil spring. The conical wedge is operatively connected to a piston which rides in the hollow drive shaft into which a pressurized fluid is injected to operate the piston and move the wedge out of engagement with the shoe stems to enable the tension spring to move the shoes radially inwards out of engagement with the clutch drum.

  • Patent number: 4060153
Abstract: A self-balancing structure for brake shoes in a caliper brake assembly to equalize essentially wear of brake linings. Brake assembly has frame journalling on opposite sides thereof opposed first and second arms, the arms journalling first and second brake shoes respectively. The arms cooperate with brake actuator, and member to be braked is positioned between the shoes. Self-balancing structure includes pair of balancing links, each link interconnecting a particular shoe on one side of frame with an arm on opposite side of frame so that each shoe reflects movement of opposite arm. Thus a movement towards the member by one side of the shoe is reflected by movement of essentially equal magnitude towards member by an opposite side of the other shoe. Resilient connector can be provided in balancing link to accommodate lateral movement of the member, thus permitting brake shoes to float to an extent determined by resilient connector.

  • Patent number: 4044968
Abstract: Downrigger for trolling having a reel mounted for rotation for winding a line thereonto, and unwinding line therefrom. Downrigger has brake means which permits control of rotation of the reel with one hand only to leave the other hand free for trolling rod. The brake means brakes the reel against rotation when engaged and permits free wheeling of the reel when disengaged. A cam means cooperates with the reel and has a cam surface and a cam follower cooperating with each other so that a particular relative movement between the cam surface and the cam follower actuates the cam means to engage the brake means. Brake means can be cocked so that rotation of the reel in a direction to unwind the line actuates cam means which then engages the brake means to prevent accidental unwinding, but still permits winding in of the line when required.
