Patent number: 5957929Abstract: An expandable stent has a sheeted material which is expanded from a compacted configuration to an expanded configuration. The sheet is maintained in the compacted configuration at least in part by operation of a dynamic force, and the expansion occurs at least in part by removal of the dynamic force. In preferred embodiments, a biocompatible sheeted material is wrapped around a retaining wire to produce a compacted configuration, and the retaining wire is rotated to maintain the compacted configuration during insertion of the stent into a patient. The rotation is continued while the stent is positioned, and then the rotation is stopped or slowed to permit expansion of the sheet.Type: GrantFiled: May 2, 1997Date of Patent: September 28, 1999Assignee: Micro Therapeutics, Inc.Inventor: Rodney A. Patent number: 5953899Abstract: In a combined cycle gasification plant, high pressure fuel gas from the gasification unit is heated prior to combustion, and is then used to dry the feedstock. The moist fuel gas from the drying operation is combusted to drive the turbine. Alternatively, high-pressure inert gas such as nitrogen is heated in the gasification unit and is then used to dry the coal feed. Some of the moist inert gas is recycled, and some if it is passed to the combustion turbine.Type: GrantFiled: August 26, 1997Date of Patent: September 21, 1999Assignee: Fluor Daniel, Inc.Inventors: Ashok D. Patent number: 5914041Abstract: A plurality of reverse osmosis units each having a cavity and a membrane are placed within a deep channel. The channel contains an unpurified liquid, and the membranes communicate directly with the unpurified liquid in the channel. The level of unpurified liquid is such that the differential pressure across the membranes is sufficient to cause purified liquid to accumulate in the cavities, from which it is emptied and pumped to the surface. The high pressure sides of the membranes are flushed by unpurified liquid being pumped through the channel. In this manner, a relatively large percentage of the channel diameter can be utilized, and the mechanisms can be implied over prior systems in which unpurified and purified liquids are piped from one reverse osmosis unit to another.Type: GrantFiled: September 8, 1997Date of Patent: June 22, 1999Assignee: Nate InternationalInventor: Dennis H. Patent number: 5875722Abstract: A system and method for purification of combustion gases cools the combustion gases to an optimal oxidation temperature, oxidizes the combustion gases, injects water or uses natural moisture content to form acid aerosols, neutralizes the acid aerosols with an alkaline solution, and then filters the acid aerosol, alkaline solution and water from the combustion gases. The purified gas stream is then exhausted from the system. Oxidation can be provided in stages to obtain optimal oxidation of different combustion gas components with different optimal oxidation temperature ranges. When used in a thermal power plant, the cooling of exhaust gases can be accomplished by regenerative preheating of combustion air, boiler feedwater or combustion fuel, and the clean exhaust gas can be cooled below the conventional exhaust stack temperature range, thus enhancing power plant efficiency.Type: GrantFiled: September 9, 1996Date of Patent: March 2, 1999Assignee: Dasibi, Inc.Inventors: Albert E.
