  • Patent number: 6584311
Abstract: A system for facilitating the acquisition of a most desirable wireless service for a wireless phone. The system includes a scanning mechanism for periodically scanning for a signal indicative of a wireless service having a coverage area that overlaps one or more coverage areas of other wireless services. A service acquisition mechanism acquires the wireless service or one of the other wireless services based on predetermined selection criteria and the signal. More specifically, the present invention includes a wireless phone having a first mechanism for determining if a detected system, i.e., service is associated with a coverage area that overlaps one or more coverage areas of different systems. A second mechanism compares the different systems to the detected system and selects a preferred system based on the comparison. A third mechanism acquires the preferred system.

  • Patent number: 6574596
Abstract: A voice recognition rejection scheme for capturing an utterance includes the steps accepting the utterance, applying an N-best algorithm to the utterance, or rejecting the utterance. The utterance is accepted if a first predefined relationship exists between one or more closest comparison results for the utterance with respect to a stored word and one or more differences between the one or more closest comparison results and one or more other comparison results between the utterance and one or more other stored words. An N-best algorithm is applied to the utterance if a second predefined relationship exists between the one or more closest comparison results and the one or more differences between the one or more closest comparison results and the one or more other comparison results.

  • Patent number: 6516188
Abstract: A method and apparatus for acquiring an emergency service from one or more candidate mobile radio communication systems. An attempt is made by the mobile radio unit to acquire normal non-emergency service. If the attempt of acquiring normal non-emergency services fails and the user needs to originate an emergency call, an emergency scan list containing one or more candidate mobile radio communication systems is scanned, and an attempt is made to acquire emergency service from one of these systems. The emergency scan list is different from the normal preferred roaming list stored in the mobile radio unit. Next, the invention originates an emergency call in accordance with the service acquired from the emergency scan list.

  • Patent number: 6490460
Abstract: A method and apparatus for dynamically adjusting a power control loop that attempts to maintain either the transmit power of a signal sent from a base station to a mobile station or the signal to noise ratio of a signal sent from the mobile station to the base station above a minimum threshold. Location information that is representative of the distance and morphology between the mobile station and the base station is determined. The minimum threshold of the power control loop is then adjusted in accordance with the location information such that the minimum threshold varies as the distance and the morphology between the mobile station and the base station change. A transmitter sends the signal at a power level that is controlled by the power control loop with the adjusted minimum threshold.

  • Patent number: 6480528
Abstract: A method and a receiver for processing a desired signal for decoding (i.e., by a decoder). In accordance with the method, an input signal that includes the desired signal and additional signals is received and filtered with a first filter having a bandwidth greater than a bandwidth of the desired signal. The filtered signal is then sampled to generate discrete time samples, which is then filtered with a discrete time matched filter. The filtered samples are then scaled with a scaling factor and quantized. A quantity related to an amplitude of the quantized samples (i.e., power) is measured, and the scaling factor is adjusted in accordance with the measured quantity. The quantized samples can be further processed (i.e., demodulated) and provided to a decoder. The desired signal can be a quadrature modulated signal, in which case matched filtering, scaling, and quantization are performed on the in-phase and quadrature components of the desired signal.

  • Patent number: 6466150
Abstract: A polar analog-to-digital converter ADC that can be advantageously used to extract phase and/or frequency information from a pair of input signals. The polar ADC includes first and second scaling elements, a number of comparators, and a decoder. The first scaling element receives and scales a first signal to provide a set of one or more scaled first signals. The second scaling element receives and scales a second signal to provide a set of one or more scaled second signals. Each of the comparators receives and compares a respective pair of scaled first and second signals and provides a comparison output. The decoder receives the comparison outputs from the comparators and generates output data, which can be indicative of the phase and/or frequency of the first and second signals.

  • Patent number: 6449476
Abstract: A system and method for independently downloading a main program and optional features into a set of storage locations of a wireless communication device uses a memory to store the main program and a set of selected optional features. An identification element associated with one in the set of selected optional features enables the main program to interact with the one in the set of selected optional features. A programmer programs the selected optional feature programs into the memory by locating a storage location in the memory. An indicator indicates when the set of selected optional features has been stored in the memory. The memory can further contain a linking element and a pointer to identify storage locations in the memory. The invention allows the set of selected optional features to be stored after the main program is stored in the memory.

  • Patent number: 6445908
Abstract: A method and apparatus for dynamic temperature compensation and pilot stage searcher selection in a mobile unit of a CDMA wireless communication link. Temperature values and measured pilot frequencies are stored in a Temperature Compensation Table and a Temperature Array. The dynamically updated frequency values maintained in the Temperature Compensation Table and Temperature Array are used to determine the searcher stage to be used in pilot signal acquisition. Both the Temperature Compensation Table and the Temperature Array (TA) are updated every 30 seconds after the mobile unit has acquired a pilot signal. The values in the Temperature Array correspond only to values measured during the current phone power on cycle. If the mobile unit loses acquisition with a pilot signal and must reacquire, the acquisition software examines the TA values to determine whether or not the current temperature is saved in the TA.

  • Patent number: 6424639
Abstract: A mobile packet network call is established over a transmission link, extending between a mobile terminal device and a given interworking function. The transmission link connects the mobile terminal device to a wireless communication device over a first interface and further connects the wireless communication device to the given interworking function over a second interface via a wireless link to a base station. The transmission link further comprises a packet mode in which the traffic channel is up and a dormant mode in which the traffic channel is down while the data link layer link and the network layer link are maintained. Network region identifier information is provided to the wireless communication device. The wireless communication device determines when the given interworking function has changed from a first interworking function to a second interworking function by determining when there is a corresponding change in the network region identifier information.

  • Patent number: 6407689
Abstract: A control mechanism that can be used to control a &Sgr;&Dgr; ADC to provide the required level of performance while reducing power consumption. The &Sgr;&Dgr; ADC is designed with multiple stages (i.e., loops or sections), and provides improved performance (e.g., higher dynamic range) as more stages are enabled. The control mechanism selectively enables a sufficient number of stages to provide the required performance and disables remaining stages to conserve power. The control mechanism achieves this by measuring one or more characteristics (e.g., signal level) of the ADC input signal through a &Sgr;&Dgr; ADC that is similar to the &Sgr;&Dgr; ADC on the signal path, comparing the measured characteristic(s) to particular threshold level(s), and controlling the stages such that the desired objectives are achieved. In one implementation, the control circuit includes one or more detector stages, a conditioning circuit, and a signal processor.

  • Patent number: RE38010
Abstract: An encoder for encoding data as trellis coded data and a decoder for decoding the trellis coded data. The encoder uses a rate ½ convolutional encoder punctured to a rate k/n to produce n symbols from k input bits. The symbols are converted by a converter to sets of p symbols and provided to an interleaver. In the interleaver certain ones of the symbols are delayed. Symbol sets are output from the interleaver to a 2P-ary modem for modulation and transmission. The decoder uses a modem for providing from the modulated data sets of p symbols. A deinterleaver delays certain ones of the symbols to achieve time alignment of the originally interleaved symbols. The sets of time aligned symbols are provided to metric calculators for computing signal metrics which are provided to a converter for providing n sets of metrics to a metric decoder. The metric decoder computes from the n sets of metrics an estimate of the encoded k data bits.
