  • Patent number: 4880592
Abstract: HB polymers, such as copolymers of hydroxy butyric acid and hydroxy valeric acid, are provided as melt extruded films having a thickness of 5 to 200 .mu.m. Sheet materials may consist of such a film or the film may be laminated with other films to increase strength or impermeability. The films are best made by co-extrusion with a thermoplastic that is substantially non-tacky upon solidification. The sheet materials are of particular value as diaper backsheets and ostomy bags. They may include a layer of non-woven material.

  • Patent number: 4879124
Abstract: In order to reduce splitting in a perforated, heat shrinkable, thermoplastic bags made from seamless tubing, rather than employ needle punched perforations, it has been discovered that slits cut by a knife blade will surprisingly reduce the splitting when a product, such as a meat product, is cooked within the bag.

  • Patent number: 4797235
Abstract: Described is the presence of both a chemical cross-linking agent and irradiation such as electron beam irradiation, in the manufacturing process for making an oriented, i.e. heat-shrinkable, polymeric film. The presence of both results in an amount of cross-linking that is effective to accomplish an increased orientation rate during manufacturing.

  • Patent number: 4779398
Abstract: A method and apparatus for making gas flushed packages in a vacuum chamber machine which includes a bag mouth clamp spaced apart form seal bars disposed to transversely seal the bag neck. A vertically moveable piercing blade and nozzle penetrate the upper wall of the bag neck as the chamber pressure is lowered and the bag "balloons" thereby causing the upper and lower neck walls to separate. Once the bag is pierced and the residual air escapes, a predetermined amount of gas is injected and then the bag is sealed. If desired, sufficient gas can be injected to make a pillow pack.

  • Patent number: 4761080
Abstract: A gusseted bag is provided which, according to a preferred mode, is constructed of thermoplastic multilayer film with an outer sealing layer and has a seamless folded bottom and reverse-fin-sealed sides. Advantageously, the starting material for such bags is lay-flat tubular film cut longitudinally along the center of one side, which is folded and joined to itself along each side of the longitudinal cut, respectively. In an alternate mode wherein the bag bottom is not seamless but is end-sealed, the bag is constructed by joining together two such lay-flat tubes along each side of their longitudinal cuts, respectively.

  • Patent number: 4724208
Abstract: This invention contemplates a novel process for the preparation of solution stable alpha-amylase obtained from Bacillus licheniformis, and to the high potency liquid enzyme product prepared by this process. Typically, the enzyme-containing solution from a fermentation is concentrated and starch is added to the concentrate. Alternatively, a precipitation agent such as salt is added to the solution, and a cake containing the enzyme precipitates. The cake is then contacted with an aqueous solution containing starch to extract the enzyme out of the cake to provide a stable liquid enzyme product.
