Abstract: An igniter for a propane burner is made substantially impermeable to moisture by coating the porous ceramic igniter shell with at least one layer of an inorganic, nonmetallic coating, the coating being an alkali silicate formed from dehydrating liquid water-glass on the surface of the ceramic igniter shell.
Abstract: A muffler for a fluid-activated, percussive, impact apparatus includes a hollow, elongated shell, forming a closed exhaust chamber, extending lengthwise along a body of the apparatus, the shell partially encircling the body of the apparatus. The shell is removably attached to the body of the apparatus so that an inlet aperture in the shell coincides with an exhaust port of the apparatus. An adjustable deflector is positioned on the outlet aperture of the shell. The shell is provided from a flexible, plastic material.
Abstract: A vibration absorbing handle for a power tool includes a monolithic, elastomeric outer gripping member having affixed and extending therein an elongated, hollow support member and a first mounting member for connection to a tool housing, the outer gripping member forming an annular flange between the hollow support member and the mounting member, the flange and outer gripping member providing flexibility and vibration absorption.
Abstract: A fluid-activated, percussive impact tool has a piston therein that reciprocates longitudinally but not rotationally. The piston activates a wrap spring clutch to rotate the drill steel. A removable splined nut in combination with the tool's housing restrains rotation of the piston, while permitting longitudinal reciprocation of the piston.

Abstract: A hydraulic system for moving a drilling head in a rectilinear motion between a mast crown and a mast table on a drilling machine includes a double rod hydraulic cylinder connected at a bottom end to a mast table and at a top end to a traveling sheave block; first and second flexible connector members for connecting a drilling head to the mast through the sheave block; and hydraulic feed circuitry for actuating the cylinder to move the sheave block and drilling head alternately in a first pulldown direction and in a second pullback direction.
Abstract: A filter having a filter element is provided for a rockdrill. The filter can be operated in three modes, namely, filtering or drilling, rinsing and back-flushing. As the filter element becomes clogged a handle on the filter can be turned to a back-flushing mode position whereby the flow of fluid through the filter element is reversed and the flow of fluid thereby expels dirt and debris accumulated in and on the filter element to the atmosphere through the a outlet port. When the handle is turned back to a filtering mode position ports in a support shaft in the filter pass through the rinsing mode which washes dirt that may have accumulated on the filter element during the back-flushing mode and expels it to the atmosphere through the vent outlet port. When the handle is positioned in the filtering mode position the filter element is clean.
Abstract: A movable instrument console for an asphalt paving machine includes a hollow instrument body movable back and forth along support rails extending widthwise of the machine and a brake shoe locking mechanism for locking the instrument console in place, and for unlocking it for movement to either side of the paving machine.
Abstract: A drill steel retainer for a jackhammer includes a latch pivotally mounted on the front head of the jackhammer, a detent mechanism for retaining the latch in a tool retaining and tool releasing position, and a stop member on the fronthead for insuring spacing between a work surface and the latch, whereby the latch can be pivoted by the operator at all times. Elastic shock absorber members are included in the latch.
Abstract: A process for producing a crack-free, laser nitride-hardened layer on a titanium substrate, the process including preheating the substrate, melting a small area of substrate with a laser, and shrouding the melted area with a gas mixture having a maximum critical amount of nitrogen not greater than 85%. A crack-free pump shaft so hardened to Rockwell 52 C is produced.

Abstract: A reversible casing for a down-the-hole drill has a predetermined snap ring groove length centered between the casing ends, based upon the casing bore, the snap ring groove depth and the snap ring body length, whereby a snap ring will be retained in the snap ring groove, while permitting lengthwise movement of the snap ring during reverse orientation of the casing.
Abstract: A wrap spring clutch, for use in a percussion device activated by a fluid having a lubricant therein, includes a plurality of grooves in at least one of the friction engagement surfaces of the wrap spring clutch, to transmit a portion of the lubricant away from the friction zone of the clutch, to enhance the friction performance of the clutch. The grooves can be parallel and separate, or a single, continuous spiral groove.
Abstract: A fluid-assisted dust seal for a drill shaft includes a tubular housing, flexible seals spaced apart in the housing along its length in contact with a drill shaft therein, a fluid plenum between two adjacent seals in the housing, and a fluid inlet for admitting pressurized fluid into the plenum, to deflect the seals downwardly so as to cause fluid flow out the bottom of the seal and thereby limiting entry of dust into the housing.
Abstract: A valveless percussive pneumatic drill includes a housing, a piston in the housing, reciprocating along the axis of the housing, a piston support bearing in the housing and an air distributor in the housing, the air distributor being mounted in the housing for flexible elastic movement therein, to permit slight misalignment of the piston with respect to the axis of the housing.
Abstract: A debris flushing system for a percussive, fluid-activated apparatus includes a first and second separate and independent flushing system in the apparatus, each flushing system having a separate combination of passageways in the apparatus for fluid communication between an inlet port and a front piston exhaust chamber. Each flushing system has a separate seal and throttle combination for opening and closing its own passageways. A third, independent flushing system for flushing water can be added to the apparatus.

A removable splined nut in combination with the tool's housing restrains rotation of the piston, while permitting longitudinal reciprocation of the piston.
Abstract: A pressure sensitive valve for a fluid-actuated percussive drill includes passageways for fluid flow to expose a valve surface to a burst of short-interval, high pressure fluid from a drive chamber to cause early closing of the valve.
Abstract: A throttle valve system for a percussive, fluid-activated apparatus includes an inlet port in a backhead, a backhead bore in the backhead, fluid passageways through the backhead to a central bore of the apparatus, a removable seal elastically mounted in the backhead bore for opening and closing the backhead bore and a throttle lever having a cam detent surface thereon for opening and closing the seal, as the lever is moved.
