Abstract: A ferroelectric random copolymer consisting essentially of about 65 to 80 mole percent of vinylidene fluoride and 35 to 20 mole percent trifluoroethylene with an increased Curie temperature obtained via a heat-treatment within certain temperature ranges. The heat-treatment can be isothermal or cyclic. The resulting material can be used in nondestructive devices over a wider temperature range than conventional materials.
Abstract: Constellations are depicted on a ceiling with phosphorescent indicators of a predetermined planar surface area, which indicators are proportionally related to each other by a constant multiplication factor, to depict various star brightness magnitudes. A template has apertures with predetermined shapes, such that each aperture permits the affixing therein of only one indicator of a specific surface area against a ceiling. When all apertures are filled with indicators, the template is removed leaving a depiction of the constellations on the ceiling.

Abstract: A method of removing complexed zinc-cyanide from wastewater involving a multiple stage process including, in a first step, control of ferrous ions to a critical minimum concentration of 250 to 400 ppm, together with pH control in the first and also a second step, together with recycling of a portion of sludge precipitated in the process. Improved sludge stability is achieved by aeration to oxidize precipitated ferrous hydroxide to ferric hydroxide, immediately before settling the sludge in a thickener.
Abstract: A mobile, offshore, jack-up, marine platform, adjustable for sloping sea floor having a mat, a multilegged column pivotally connected thereto and a work platform slidably mounted on the column. Means are included for independently vertically adjusting at least one leg and for selectively cantilevering a drilling unit on the work platform, with offset ballasting of the work platform.
Abstract: In the operation of a by-product coke oven, in order to provide a coking cycle that meets an aim push time and also includes a coke soaking period of pre-selected length, the method of obtaining a plurality of liquid catch specimens having condensed therein volatiles from samples of gas withdrawn from the oven; determining a light-transmitting value for such liquid catch specimens for the coke devolatilizing period and for the coke soaking period; determining the end of the devolatilizing period based upon the light-transmitting values so determined; and, if necessary, adjusting the heating rate of the coke oven on subsequent coking cycles. Apparatus for obtaining such liquid catch specimens, and for determining such light-transmitting values is disclosed.
Abstract: A thermocouple, for measuring the temperature of flat strip moving horizontally through a furnace, extends vertically into the furnace and can move vertically within a fixed guide assembly. The ceramic insulated thermocouple element, inside an outer thermocouple member, can move within the outer thermocouple member, in response to the urging of a spring, and has a contact pad composed of a metal with a melting point such that a layer of molten metal forms on the contact pad from frictional heat from the moving strip. In a second embodiment, for measuring vertically moving strip, with the thermocouple assembly horizontally positioned, the thermocouple assembly includes a second spring to urge the thermocouple assembly horizontally into the furnace against the moving strip.
Abstract: A portable, hand-held, detachable, rotatable driving head for driving a continuous grinding belt by means of an air-driven, rotatable spindle including a detachable safety shield around the driving head.

Abstract: A scanning device for examining an object with gamma rays with shielding for protection from radiation and protection of the mechanism from heat by a cooling jacket formed by spaced plates around the object. The shielding is formed by a pair of shutter-halves forming a lead shutter with mechanism to move the shutter-halves toward and away from each other and one of the shutter-halves mounted on a rotating drum which also carries three gamma ray sources. Gamma ray detectors are mounted in a circle concentric and outside the circle of the sources.

Abstract: A computer-based eddy current nondestructive or ultrasonic testing system automatically inspects rolling mill roll surface defects during roll grinding operations comprising articulated probe means, eddy current, or ultrasonic, test instrument means, computer means, display and printer means. The articulated probe mechanism is mounted on a traversing roll grinder carriage, is automatically positioned over the test roll in response to control means initiated by the grinder operator, and has a probe head with a controlled fluid bearing, air or liquid, to automatically maintain probe-head-to-test roll gap. One or multiple eddy current, or ultrasonic, probes in the test head generate anamoly test signals, which, together with a probe head temperature sensor signal, are processed in a modified test instrument and the computer. Computer plots defects signals as color bars vs. probe position and displays these bars graphically and other messages on a color CRT display and/or a graph printer.
Abstract: A cooling plate for insertion into the lining of a blast furnace or the like wherein the plate is adapted to have a chamber with cooling water channels for the passage of cooling water therethrough and having a unique baffle means for dividing the flow of water to increase the velocity of flow and avoid stagnant zones.
Abstract: Driving a dividing shear to a home position after cutting a workpiece is done without oscillations at the home position. Control uses shear position feedback signal to shape nonlinearly a variable shear velocity reference signal such that no overshoot occurs. Adaptive control procedure automatically adjusts variable shear velocity reference signal to compensate for dynamic changes in cutting operation.
Abstract: Ingot yield is improved by changing teeming practice to pouring ingot body and hot top by weight rather than by volume to a mark on a hot top casting. Correct weight addition to the ingot hot top is calculated by a computerized weight-loss weigher system using either a value related to ingot mold body size or a precentage of body weight. Calculation is initiated either manually or automatically when hot metal level is detected at the bottom of the hot top casting.
Abstract: Multi-channel automatic on-line ultrasonic inspection system for real time high-speed pulse echo testing is done across the width of a hot moving workpiece, such as steel plates and the like. In addition to a multiplexed transducer array search unit, the system includes an adjustable ultrasound fluid couplant, a main ultrasonic instrument modified with a digital multi-channel R.F. attenuation controller and a digital automatic flaw gate controller combined as on-line calibration means. The calibration means automatically corrects echo pulses for attenuation errors due to effects of variations in workpiece alloy or composition and temperature, and timing errors due to effects of variations in thickness and transducer gap, respectively. System further includes an ultrasonic data buffer/controller (UDBC) for digitizing, encoding and storing corrected or uncorrected flaw area data passed by the flaw gate during workpiece movement.
