  • Patent number: 6308420
Abstract: The folding knife includes an elongated handle forming a spacing therebetween. An elongated blade having a working end and a tang at the opposite end within a common plane, a pivot including a pivot axis connecting the tang to the handle to permit the blade to pivot selectively into an open position at which the blade extends outwardly from the handle and into a closed position in which the blade is nested into the spacing. The blade is provided with a cam, that may be a rolling cam, secured to the blade eccentric to the pivot axis and spaced from the plane that includes the blade. An operating spring is secured at one end to the handle and has abutting contact with the cam remote from the end in the handle thus forming force vectors that are arranged selectively to resist the pivoting of the blade to an open position and when in an open position resisting the pivoting of the blade to a closed position.

  • Patent number: 6269066
Abstract: A composite interferometer and electro-optical prism provide a means to control the position of a spot of light to read and write data on an optical disc. In this invention each light ray from a spectral source of a cone of light rays is regenerated into a plurality of light rays by an interferometer. These rays are transmitted through an electro-optic crystal and focused by a lens into a constructive interference fringe on an optical disc. A voltage across the electro-optical crystal and magnetic field inside the spectral source define the position of the constructive interference fringe on the disc.

  • Patent number: 6264871
Abstract: The method of forming a field joint around the bare joint of two joined insulation covered pipes includes providing a first angular cut back in the coating to expose the end of a pipe and providing a second cut back in the coating to provide an annular band of the coating of a lesser diameter than the coating on the pipe. A thin coating of polyurethane may then be applied over the first and second cut backs and a recess provided in the band of coating. A mould may then be secured around the lesser diameter band, and polyurethane pumped into the mould in a sufficient amount to form a field joint which extends into the second cut back and lies flush with the coating of the pipes so as to allow for reeling and laying of the pipe without snagging. The field joint can be located around the bare joint and includes a polyurethane infill recessed into the insulated coating of the pipes such that infill lies flush with the surface of the coating on the pipes.

  • Patent number: 6253552
Abstract: An apparatus for heating a multicomponent working fluid includes a circulating fluidized bed configured to combust a collection of solid particles producing flue gases carrying particulate matter. Heat from the flue gases is transferred to a multicomponent working fluid contained within a plurality of first fluid tubes forming an enclosure for containing and directing a flow of the flue gases. The enclosure may also contain additional tubes forming a superheater. A separator receives the flue gases from the enclosure and separates the particulate matter therefrom expelling a first portion of the flue gases substantially without the separated particulate matter and a second portion of the flue gases containing the particulate matter. A heat exchanger receives the second portion of the flue gases provided as an output from the separator. An adjustable flow controller regulates the flow from the separator of the second portion of the flue gases to the heat exchanger and to the enclosure.

  • Patent number: 6213088
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for improving the thorough mixing of the exhaust gas/fuel mixture in an internal combustion engine (1), whereby the exhaust gas stream is at least temporarily impinged upon by an increased exhaust-gas mass flow when additional fuel is supplied. According to said method, during the exhaust stroke, when the exhaust valve (8) or exhaust valves are open, the additional fuel is fed directly into the combustion chamber of the internal combustion engine (1). The invention also provides for a device to carry out said method, according to which the additional fuel is injected during the exhaust stroke when the exhaust valve (8) or exhaust valves (8) are open by means of at least one injection nozzle (10) positioned in the combustion chamber. Both the method and the device are especially simple and cost-efficient.
