  • Patent number: 5832891
Abstract: In a valve gear-mechanism for a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine, the inlet valves (E1, E2) are actuated optionally by first cams on a camshaft via first finger levers (7) or by second cams via second finger levers (9), the first and second finger levers being separate or linked together by coupling pins (13) to which a pressure medium can be applied via a longitudinal channel (15) in the finger lever shaft. In order to be able to cut individual cylinders out, the first cams allocated to the inlet valves (E1) of the cylinder concerned have a zero-lift contour and in the longitudinal channel (15) there is a sealed section (15a) allocated to one of said valves (E1) which can individually be connected to a source of pressure medium so that, when the supply of pressure medium is interrupted, the inlet valves of said cylinder are stopped and, on connection to the source of pressure medium, the inlet valves are actuated in accordance with the contour of the second cam.

  • Patent number: 5832859
Abstract: A method and apparatus for containment of a space adjacent the hull of a ship to protect the environment from polluting materials resulting from the abrasive blasting, spray painting and the like comprising, welding studs having integral connectors to the hull along a direction substantially fore and aft of the ship. Lines are supported and run relative to the studs. Sections of a shroud are connected to the lines and the lines are drawn to pull one end of the shroud sections proximal to the hull and the other end is fixed remote from the hull. Adjacent sections are secured along their sides. The entire space beneath the shroud and adjacent the hull containing the polluting materials is therefore separated from the environment.

  • Patent number: 5827956
Abstract: A measuring wheel detects forces and moments between the rim and axle of a vehicle wheel with measuring sensors between the rim face and a wheel flange apparatus transmits the energy and data to a measurement evaluation and processing system on the vehicle. The wheel flange and/or the front of the rim consists of a fiber compound, while the apparatus on the wheel for transmitting energy and data are fitted on the inside of the rim bed holding the vehicle tire and extends essentially over its circumference. Thus the static properties and dynamic behavior of the measuring wheel during travel correspond to the greatest degree to the original wheel. Effects which falsify the measurements such as increased wheel weight and the like do not arise.

  • Patent number: 5808888
Abstract: A method and apparatus for programming the motion of a machine tool in a three-dimensional machining space defined by an X, Y and Z coordinate system, the machine tool having a spindle linearly displaceable in three orthogonal X, Y and Z axes and rotatable about two mutually perpendicular A and C axes within the machining space. A probe, mounted in the spindle and coupled to transducers, is moved by hand through a desired cutting path for an actual part. A computer connected to the transducers moves the machine in the direction that the probe is moved and selectively records the position of the probe to create an NC parts program that replicates the cutting path motions.

  • Patent number: 5795524
Abstract: A mandrel is fitted with a molded sleeve of low-temperature alloy for forming a rigid bulge along the surface of the mandrel. The sleeve is shaped to define the internal surface of the shell at the bulge. After the mandrel has been so modified with the low-temperature alloy sleeve, it is wrapped with composite cloth containing any thermosetting resin. These resins heat to a known temperature, and permanently set when cured at the set temperature. The curing temperature of the prepreg cloth composite material is lower than the melting point of the low temperature alloy. After curing, the temperature in the curing oven is raised above the cure temperature until it reaches the melting point of the low-temperature alloy, and the alloy liquifies and drains out the drain passageways provided in the mandrel without melting the thermoset resin binder in the fiber cloth as well as leaving the bulge formed by the composite cloth in the shell without obstructing the removal of the mandrel.

  • Patent number: 5793703
Abstract: This invention relates to improvements in or relating to digital time-delay acoustic imaging. According to the invention there is provided an acoustic imaging method for marine survey and other purposes comprising the steps of: insonifying a target area by periodic acoustic pulses; detecting reflections of said pulses by an array of at least two receiver transducers, which transducers generate respective output signals in response thereto, wherein further the signals are: sampled in time at a predetermined rate during an interval between said pulses; converted from analog to digital form; processed so as to generate a composite acoustic signal for each pixel in the insonified target area required to be imaged; and match-filtered with optimised filters in the frequency domain with an estimated source pulse signature.

  • Patent number: 5788411
Abstract: A roller compacted concrete (RCC) dam is formed from inverted T-shape face panels to produce a lower sloped profile and L-shape face panel to produce an upper vertical profile. The face panels have drain openings in their penetrating legs to communicate with drain fill lifts placed against the vertical rise of the face panels. RCC lifts are placed on the penetrating legs to lock the placement of these face panels. The drain openings provide terminal drainage for lift line seepage. The inverted T-shape face panel has both a protruding leg and a penetrating leg projecting into the RCC lift. The protruding leg is provided with a dowel for gripping and alignment that permits raising and lowering of the face panel and is received within a sleeve in the face panel therebelow.

  • Patent number: 5785425
Abstract: A Portable Fluid Boiling Point Sensing Device (1) which can be used to measure the boiling point of fluids. The device includes a probe (2) for immersion in fluid to be tested, in particular in fluid reservoir. The probe (2) comprises a casing (2a) defining a chamber (3) for a semi-encapsulated portion of fluid (3a). The fluid (3a) kept at an optimum level without sensitive probe (2) depth measurement by a quantity of air (4) being trapped above an aperture means (6a) on the casing (2a) causing an artificial fluid level (L.sub.1) to be maintained below the surface of the test fluid. A heater (8) and a temperature sensor (9) are present in the housing (2a) and apertures (5, 6a, 6b) are provided to permit fluid flows into and from the chamber (3). The device senses the boiling temperature of the fluid by measuring the temperature of the vapors (11) given off the heated fluid (3a) within the housing (3), or alternatively directly from the fluid (FIG. 5a/b).
