Patent number: 5611571Abstract: The invention relates to a pole shaft for a cross-country ski pole. Longitudinal and transverse fiber layers are used for providing a hollow shaft, whose cross section changes progressively downwards into a droplet shape and, below the mid-way point of a shaft, the length of a droplet shape in relation to its width increases while the cross-sectional area diminishes. By virtue of the droplet shape, the pole can be given more rigidity in skiing direction, whereby the bottom end of a pole can be made lighter while improving the aerodynamics of a pole.Type: GrantFiled: September 1, 1995Date of Patent: March 18, 1997Assignee: Exel OyInventors: Taisto Manninen, Markku Ripatti, Pauli Jaatinen

Patent number: 5583636Abstract: An interferometric modulator uses a beamsplitter to produce deflected and transmitted light beams onto mirrored surfaces of a piezoelectric crystal pair, one piezoelectric crystal being driven by a modulating voltage signal, whereupon the light beams are reflected back to the beamsplitter to produce a modulated optical output signal, with the modulator being especially adaptable for use as a digital photonic clock, as a pulse width/amplitude modulator, and as a bistable optical memory cell. A self-switching optical digital clock generates a digital signal without piezoelectric crystals by using analog optical feedback signals of precise time durations. Interferometric modulation is also used to amplify a sinusoidal electromagnetic signal, to regulate signal amplification, and to create logic functions.Type: GrantFiled: May 3, 1994Date of Patent: December 10, 1996Inventor: Jeffrey A. Patent number: 5580104Abstract: A single insert is provided with a plurality of curved channels extending therethrough. Such insert allows passage of a relatively large number of cables through a relatively small area of a pressure vessel wall, and the curvature of the channels prevents a straight line path for gamma radiation. The curvature of the channels (i.e. their radius) exceeds the design minimum bend radius for cables that will be passed through the insert. The ends of the insert are conical in shape to provide increased spacing for gland nuts secured in the ends of the channels.Type: GrantFiled: May 3, 1995Date of Patent: December 3, 1996Assignee: Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock CompanyInventor: Clinton W. Patent number: 5577288Abstract: A vehicle washing system includes an arch frame that moves on rails over and along the length of a vehicle. A rack support arm is rotatively connected to a horizontal cross member of the frame and a rack with vertically depending cleaning strips is connected to the support arm. Prior to activation, the vertically depending cleaning strips are located on the side(s) of the frame so that an unobstructed vehicle entry and exit way is provided. Once activated, the cleaning strips are rotated into position in contact with the vehicle. Thereafter, the rack support arm is reciprocated to move the strips back and forth across the vehicle as the frame moves. A dual-rod cylinder provides movement of the rack support arm into an active position with the cleaning strips in contact with the vehicle and also provides the reciprocating action. A rocker panel cleaning assembly is provided to clean the sides of the vehicle as the frame moves and the rack support arm reciprocates.Type: GrantFiled: August 27, 1993Date of Patent: November 26, 1996Assignee: Magic Wand, Inc.Inventors: Michael D. Patent number: 5547003Abstract: Square inside corners are formed in raised panels from a single workpiece to be used in the manufacture of cabinetry, furniture and the like. A machine with a rotatable spindle provides the drive for the square corner forming tool bit. The tool bit is mounted on a support that translates the rotary motion of the spindle to a reciprocating motion of the tool bit. The tool bit has a pair of side wall surfaces that are displaced at an angle equal to one half the angle formed by the corner, relative to the line of travel of the tool bit. The lower edges of the side wall surfaces are formed with cutting blades, ridges, or abrasive surfaces or, alternatively, the bottom wall surface of the tool bit is formed with such cutting edges.Type: GrantFiled: May 11, 1994Date of Patent: August 20, 1996Assignee: Thermwood CorporationInventors: Kenneth J. Patent number: 5535704Abstract: A valve-actuating mechanism for a multicylinder internal combustion engine has, for each inlet valve of a cylinder, a low engine speed cam and a high engine speed cam. A first rocker arm cooperates with the low engine speed cam and the valve, while a second rocker arm cooperates only with the high engine speed cam and in the high engine speed range can be coupled to the first rocker arm in order to operate the valve in accordance with the contour of the high engine speed cam. The coupling between the first and second rocker arms is effected by means of a piston which can be moved by a pressure medium and which is acted on by the latter only when sufficient time remains to bring the piston into its coupling position before the commencement of the lifting phase of the valve in question.Type: GrantFiled: March 28, 1995Date of Patent: July 16, 1996Assignee: Audi AGInventor: Michael Paul
