Abstract: An applicator comprising a support stick having mounted on at least one end thereof a one-piece swab formed of a fibrous, non-woven material having an outer flock surface is described. The applicator is useful in the application of such cosmetics as eye shadow and eye liner.
Abstract: A spray head is disclosed having an aligned fluid conduit leading respectively to a source of pressurized water and a spray outlet. A rotatable, vertically movable valve element lies in a suitable bore in the spray head between the conduits. The valve has a horizontal conduit therethrough which merges with a vertical conduit adapted to convey liquid from a container to which the spray head is connected. A frangible locking collar lies between the head of the valve and the upper surface of the spray head holding the valve from either rotational or vertical movement towards the container. Breaking and removal of the locking collar allows for 90.degree. rotation of the valve to unseat inwardly from a flange carried by the valve body from inwardly projecting retaining flanges carried by the spray head body thereby allowing for downward movement of the valve to puncture a seal over the container holding the liquid.
Abstract: An insect-active assembly which can provide insect repellency, insecticidal action, or both, and which is adapted to be directly affixed to the garment worn by a person is provided. The assembly comprises a polymeric body which contains an insect-active composition, as a volatile plasticizer, which, over time, migrates from the polymeric body to provide the desired degree of insect-active action. The insect-active assembly can be affixed directly to the garment of a person either by being configured to fit over or be affixed to a portion a the person's garment, (e.g., as a hatband) or by having separate means provided to affix it to the garment. Such separate means for affixing the polymeric body to the garment include pressure-sensitive adhesive coatings and hook-and-loop fasteners.
Abstract: Aqueous-based adhesive compositions having good adhesion to a non-polar polymeric surface and to cellulosic materials comprise a dispersion of an adhesive comprising an N-vinyl lactam polymeric resin, a tackifier for such adhesive, and an effective amount of an ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer emulsion stabilizer for the resin and tackifier. Preferred N-vinyl lactam polymeric resins are vinyl pyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymers and a preferred class of tackifier are the rosin ester tackifiers.
Abstract: The present invention is an improved applicator swab which contains a resilient cushion element between the end of the applicator stick and the adherent, absorbent swab tip for the applicator swab. The presence of the cushion element, which is preferably formed of a soft, resilient hot melt adhesive, gives an added degree of protection should the end of the stick holding the swab tip protrude through the body of the tip upon being manipulated by the end user of the applicator swab.

Abstract: In liquid, pourable, thickened chlorine bleaching compositions, in which the thickening is produced by at least two different detergent active compounds, a buffer salt is included to improve their stability at lower chlorine levels and at reduced pH values. Typically, a composition comprises an aqueous solution of alkali-metal hypochlorite, thickened by means of a tertiary amine oxide and a saturated fatty acid soap, and contains an alkali-metal orthophosphate buffer system, at a chlorine content of 1-10% and a pH of 10-12.5. The compositions are useful in bleaching operations, especially in bleaching hard surfaces such as toilets, tiles, kitchen sinks, etc.
Abstract: Oil-in-water emulsions, which are microbiologically stable upon storage, consisting of oil, water, thickeners, emulsifiers, and optional further ingredients, are obtained by subjecting at least one of these components to an osmotic and/or acid shock and to a temperature shock by heating said component(s) within 3 minutes, preferably within 1 minute, to 40.degree.-55.degree. C., preferably to 45.degree.-50.degree. C., and processing the thus treated component(s) with the remaining ingredients into a final emulsion, during which the temperature of the final emulsion up to and including the filling and hermetically sealing of the containers into which it is being packed, is maintained at 40.degree.-55.degree. C. Preferably the temperature shock is achieved by adding during the preparation of the final emulsion a thickener suspension having a temperature of 70.degree.-95.degree. C. to the remaining components which have been subjected to an osmotic and/or acid shock.
Abstract: A particulate alkaline detergent composition is disclosed which is suitable for washing fabrics and exhibiting good detergency, stability and bleaching while the level of inorganic material deposited on the fabrics is at an acceptably low level. The composition comprises a synthetic detergent active, a mixture of tripolyphosphate and orthophosphate in the ratio of 20:1 to 3:1 and a mixture of a peroxygen bleach such as perborate and a bleach activator such as tetraacetylethylenediamine. The phosphates constitute from 10 to 40% of the composition while the bleach system constitutes from 5 to 30%. The amount of pyrophosphate, if any, should be kept below 5%. Soap may be added to the composition. The compositions may be prepared by mixing the bleach system and optionally the alkali metal phosphate with a spray dried powder containing the remaining constituents.

Abstract: A process for producing absorbent granules from sodium tripolyphosphate or disodium hydrogen orthophosphate by simultaneously granulating and hydrating the salts to full hydration. The process produces granules which have good absorbency without the need for a drying step. The granules can be used for absorbing liquid nonionic surfactant or other liquid components of detergent powders such as perfumes.
Abstract: The invention relates to non-aqueous, built liquid detergent compositions. By a judicious choice of surfactant, solvent, alkaline material and builder, and the use of an at least partially hydrolyzed copolymer of maleic anhydride and ethylene or vinylmethylether, stable compositions are obtained. The method of making same requires first dissolving the copolymer in the solvent before the other ingredients are added.

Abstract: A liquid formulation for depositing perfumes on fabric surfaces comprises an aqueous base, 0.5 to 30% of a fabric conditioning agent such as a fabric softener and 0.5-50% of particles consisting of an intimate mixture of an amine and a perfume, the particles having a size of 0.1-200 micron, preferably 0.1 to 5 micron. The amine may be a primary amine, a tertiary amine or a diamine. The particles are formed from a liquid melt of the amine and the perfume by dispersing in water. A benefit over particles consisting of non-ionic, cationic and perfume can be demonstrated.
Abstract: Concentrated, liquid fabric-softening compositions containing 15-60% of a cationic fabric-softening agent, and an aqueous medium, are prepared by inclusion therein of an effective amount of polymer, such as polyethyleneglycol with a molecular weight of 6,000. These compositions are water-dispersible and pourable, and can be easily dosed into the rinse cycle of a washing process, e.g. by means of automatic dosing devices in the washing machine.
Abstract: Process for the selective hydrogenation of polyunsaturated compounds with a metallic catalyst. The selectivity is increased and trans-isomerization is decreased by carrying out the hydrogenation in the presence of a catalyst to which, before the hydrogenation is started, an external potential, differing from the naturally occuring equilibrium potential, is applied while in contact with an electrolyte, such as a quaternary ammonium salt, dissolved in a liquid, such as an alcohol or a ketone.

Abstract: A novel method for applying adjuvants to fabric employing a tumbler-type dryer is disclosed. To achieve uniform distribution in the dryer, the adjuvant, such as a fabric softening agent in accordance with the present invention, is diluted with a distributing agent spreadable under the dryer conditions, the concentration of the distributing agent being at least about 5% by weight of the mixture of adjuvant and distributing agent, the adjuvant being present in an effective amount. Novel compositions of matter and articles suitable for use in the practice of this invention are also disclosed.
Abstract: A defatted meal originating from oil-bearing seeds such as soybean, rapeseed or cottonseed is treated with an acidic aqueous solution to solubilize protein present in the meal. If desired any insoluble carbohydrates present can be removed. The pH of the resulting slurry or clarified solution is lowered to between 2.0 and 3.0 and maintained to dissociate the protein into its subunits. The slurry or clarified solution is heated to cause aggregation of the subunits and its pH is then raised prior to ultra-filtration. A membrane is employed which retains the proteinaceous material and yet allows salts and low molecular sugar to permeate.
