  • Patent number: 4778660
Abstract: A method and apparatus for improving the separation of a catalyst phase from a gas suspension phase in a fluidized catalytic cracking (FCC) unit. In a vertical separation embodiment, a cyclone separator inlet is located in the upper portion of a riser conversion zone and draws off gaseous hydrocarbon materials, while catalyst particles continue vertically to the end of the riser conversion zone, and pass through a catalyst conduit to a catalyst storage area. In a horizontal separation embodiment, the catalyst/hydrocarbon mixture is transported horizontally from the end of the riser conversion zone past a cyclone separator inlet towards a catalyst conduit. The cyclone inlet draws off gaseous hydrocarbon materials, while the catalyst particles pass through the catalyst conduit to a catalyst storage area.

  • Patent number: 4776478
Abstract: A wastebasket includes a container and a lid which is mounted on the container. The container is formed with an opening providing access to the container's interior. The lid is pivotable about a pivot axis to cover and at least partially uncover the container opening. The pivot axis divides the lid into a forward portion and a rearward portion which are respectively disposed on opposite forward and rearward sides of a vertical plane encompassing the pivot axis when the lid is in a position covering the container opening. The forward portion of the lid has a greater cross-sectional area than the rearward portion, and the rearward portion has a greater weight than the forward portion. The lid is pivotable between a first position, where the lid substantially covers the container opening, and a second position, where the forward portion of the lid is disposed inwardly of the container and uncovers at least a portion of the container opening.

  • Patent number: 4777156
Abstract: A process for using hydrogen-containing gas to regenerate a zeolite catalyst comprising at least some crystalline aluminosilicate zeolitic material having pore windows formed by 8-membered rings of oxygen atoms, e.g., ZSM-34, which has been used to promote conversion of methanol and/or methyl ether to light olefins. Contact of such catalysts with hydrogen-containing gas such as hydrogen or synthesis gas at particular regeneration temperatures and pressures can restore the activity of such catalysts either in the presence or absence of organic reactants without forming potentially catalyst-damaging by-products such as water.

  • Patent number: 4776398
Abstract: The permeability of a subterranean oil-bearing formation is controlled by the injection of an aqueous solution of a cross-linked block copolymer containing polar and non-polar segments, with the polar segments generally making up at least 50 percent, usually 60 to 99 percent, of the copolymer. The polar segments are derived from an alkylene oxide and the non-polar segments from styrene or an alkyl styrene either by itself or with a diene. The copolymers are cross-linked with an amino resin or a combination of a phenolic and a water-dispersible aldehyde component. The resulting copolymer gels are stable at low pH conditions, such as those of CO.sub.2 flood conditions.

  • Patent number: 4774888
Abstract: A composition for making an in situ disposable propellant canister for utilization in controlled pulse fracturing. Said canister is composed of a porous light fabric material in combination with a gel solution. The gel creates a formable mass after solidification. Said mass can be made of a gel thickness sufficient to support and contain a propellant. Upon ignition of said propellant, the gelled canister is destroyed thereby alleviating a clean up operation.

  • Patent number: 4775962
Abstract: A fluid filled marine seismic streamer employs a plurality of hydrophones spaced apart along its length to detect seismic reflection signals from subsurface formations below a water layer. A plurality of fluid blocking members are also spaced apart along the length of the streamer. A plurality of flow through spacers having varying flow through apertures are positioned between each hydrophone adjacent to a fluid blocking member that generates pressure pulses in the fill fluid of significant magnitude to be detected by such hydrophone. The size of the flow through apertures of such spacers progressively increases in a direction leading from the fluid blocking member toward the hydrophone.

  • Patent number: 4773483
Abstract: The relatively highly permeable zones of a subterranean oil containing formation having a neutral to alkaline pH are selectively plugged by initially injecting an aqueous acid solution into the relatively highly permeable zones that lowers the pH of these zones to about 6 or less. Thereafter, an aqueous polysulfide solution is injected into the formation that preferentially enters the relatively highly permeable zones and allowed to disproportionate under the pH conditions within the relatively highly permeable zones to form a precipitate of elemental sulfur in situ which plugs the relatively highly permeable zones in the formation. Thereafter, improved sweep efficiency is realized in displacing oil from the lesser permeable zones. If the natural pH of the relatively highly permeable zones in the formation is about 6 or less, the initial treatment with the aqueous acid solution is unnecessary.
