    Abstract: Disclosed is an apparatus for providing a shower of fog onto a web or a machine component in contact with a web. The fog, which has a temperature lower than the temperature of the surface of the web or the machine component to be cooled, is applied to the surface and is caused to evaporate by the difference in the temperatures. A supply of dry air is supplied to transport the evaporated fog from the region surrounding the surface to be cooled. Fog may be generated through the use of an air-atomizing nozzle which propels water and compressed air through a small orifice under pressure to create an atomized mist or fog. The fog may also be generated through the use of an ultrasonic transducer which expels fine droplets of water from its surface by means of a high-frequency oscillating transducer motion. In one embodiment, the fog may also be generated in controlled specified quantities locally at each nozzle as required to provide for a controllable fog application rate across the full apparatus width.

    Abstract: A data telecommunications system and method is provided for sending a data stream of characters in distinct data packets between two units of data terminal equipment (which can be either terminals and/or computers) connected over communication lines. A modem is connected between each unit of data terminal equipment and the communication lines, and one initiating modem includes a means for changing the packet size of the data which is transmitted. The receiving modem checks the packets for errors, and if errors are found, the packet is retransmitted. The initiating modem counts the number of transmissions of data packets as well as the number of retransmissions of data packets. A ratio of retransmissions to transmissions is used to determine the optimum packet size. The packet size is continually subject to change as the ratio changes during transmission.

    Abstract: The invention concerns a centrifuge intended for use in mainpulating liquid batches on an analytical scale. The centrifuge consists of a body (2) rotatable about its axis (1) provided with input and output conduits (8,9,11) and presenting the essential feature that therein are contained two parallel, circular arc-shaped volumes (3,4) located at different distances from the axis (1) of the body (2) constituting the center of curvature, and communicating with each other through a narrow gap (7) so that when the body is rotating, the heavier components of the liquid accumulate in the volume (4) further away from the axis, and the lighter components accumulate in the volume (3) closer to the axis, whereafter one of these two volumes can be emptied through a conduit (12), while the surface tension acting in the gap between the volumes keeps the liquid in the other volume in its place. The centrifuge of this invention is particularly appropriate for separating blood plasma from the red and white cells in the blood.

    Abstract: Disclosed is a steam-shower apparatus and method including a supply of steam which is fed through a Coanda nozzle and along a path running parallel with one surface of the apparatus. The sheet to which the steam is to be applied runs parallel to this same surface of the machine, but in a direction opposite to the direction of the flow of steam. The sheet travels along a path spaced slightly from the surface of the machine, and the flow of steam runs the entire length of this surface heating the sheet as it flows in the opposite direction. The apparatus may be divided into several sections so that the sheet may be profiled along certain regions which are defined by these sections. In addition, means are included for altering the volume of flow to any one of the particular sections.

    Abstract: In a method for reprocessing aqueous, oily and greasy cleaning solutions by separating oil and grease out of the solution in an oil separator, a mixture of oil, grease and cleaning solution separated in the oil separator is subjected to vaporization for the purpose of thickening it, the hot water vapor thereby resulting is used to heat the oil separator and the condensed water resulting from the vapor is fed back to the cleaning solution for its regeneration. An apparatus for performing this method is characterized in that the oil separator is enclosed by an outer casing, in the bottom region of which the separated cleaning solution containing oil and grease is collected and vaporized, the hot vapor thereby resulting being utilized to heat the cleaning fluid in the oil separator. A condensate collecting tray is provided between the bottom region of the outer casing and a bottom wall of the oil separator and condensed water flows from this tray back into the cleaning solution.

    Abstract: There is disclosed a solid ultrasonic delay line comprising a solid ultrasonic delay medium on which polygonal multiple-reflective surfaces are formed. An input transducer for radiating longitudinal waves is disposed on one of the reflective surfaces. The longitudinal waves are transformed into transverse waves by other one of the reflective surfaces and then reconverted by yet other one of the reflective surfaces into longitudinal waves which enter an output transducer disposed on still other one of the reflective surfaces. Ultrasound absorbers cover at least portions of the main boundary surfaces perpendicular to the reflective surfaces. Spurious waves of the longitudinal waves radiated from the input transducer are transformed by the main boundary surfaces into transverse waves which enter the absorbers.

    Abstract: A method of and apparatus for burning liquid fuels such as oil or the like and/or solid fuels, especially coal, peat or the like, in pulverized form, the latter either in dry condition or mixed with a carrier liquid such as water and/or oil to form an emulsion being introduced together with the liquid fuel into a combustion chamber while creating a recirculating flow profile, said flow profile being confined by a rotating outer flow of air. For thorough breaking-up of the fuel introduced into the combustion chamber the fuel inlet is constituted by a plurality of inlet ports approximately evenly distributed along a circumference, especially a circle, the liquid-fuel inlet ports and the inlet ports for solid fuel or a fuel emulsion being alternately arranged along said circumference. The fuel inlet ports may be directed either radially and/or at an outward inclination in the direction of flow, based on the longitudinal axis of the combustion chamber.
