Patent number: 7154605Abstract: A method is described for characterizing defects on a test surface of a semiconductor wafer using a confocal-microscope-based automatic defect characterization (ADC) system. The surface to be tested and a reference surface are scanned using a confocal microscope to obtain three-dimensional images of the test and reference surfaces. The test and reference images are converted into sets of geometric constructs, or “primitives,” that are used to approximate features of the images. Next, the sets of test and reference primitives are compared to determine whether the set of test primitives is different from the set of reference primitives. If such a difference exists, then the difference data is used to generate defect parameters, which are then compared to a knowledge base of defect reference data. Based on this comparison, the ADC system characterizes the defect and estimates a degree of confidence in the characterization.Type: GrantFiled: May 8, 2003Date of Patent: December 26, 2006Assignee: KLA-Tencor CorporationInventors: Bruce W. Patent number: 7152801Abstract: Enclosed re-programmable non-volatile memory cards include at least two sets of electrical contacts to which the internal memory is connected. The two sets of contacts have different patterns, preferably in accordance with two different contact standards such as a memory card standard and that of the Universal Serial Bus (USB). One memory card standard that can be followed is that of the Secure Digital (SD) card. The cards can thus be used with different hosts that are compatible with one set of contacts but not the other. A sleeve that is moveable by hand may be included to expose the set of contacts being used.Type: GrantFiled: April 16, 2004Date of Patent: December 26, 2006Assignee: SanDisk CorporationInventors: Edwin J. Patent number: 7151964Abstract: Multi-phase RF ablation employing a two-dimensional or three-dimensional electrode array produces a multitude of currents paths on the surface of the ablation zone. This results in a uniform lesion with a size defined by the span of the electrode array. An orthogonal electrode catheter array suitable for cardiac ablation is used in conjunction with a two-phase RF power source to produce uniform square-shaped lesions of size 1.2 cm2. Lesions of larger size are created by successive adjacent placement of the square-shaped lesions. A temperature sensor at the electrode tip allows monitoring of ablation temperature and regulation of thereof to minimize the electrode tips from being fouled by coagulum. In another embodiment, an external auxiliary electrode is used in combination with the catheter electrodes. This also produces lesions of greater depth. In yet another embodiment, ablation is performed with a sequence of elementary electrode-electrical configurations.Type: GrantFiled: May 30, 2003Date of Patent: December 19, 2006Inventors: Jawahar M. Patent number: 7149871Abstract: A non-volatile memory is divided into logical zones by the card controller in order reduce the size of the data structures it uses for address translation. Zone boundaries are adjusted to accommodate defects allowed by memory test to improve card yields and to adjust boundaries in the field to extend the usable lifetime of the card. Firmware scans for the presence of defective blocks on the card. Once the locations of these blocks are known, the firmware calculates the zone boundaries in such a way that good blocks are equally distributed among the zones. Since the number of good blocks meets the card test criteria by the memory test criteria, defects will reduce card yield fallout. The controller can perform dynamic boundary adjustments. When defects occur, the controller can perform the analysis again and, if needed, redistributes the zone boundaries, moving any user data.Type: GrantFiled: April 26, 2005Date of Patent: December 12, 2006Assignee: SanDisk CorporationInventor: Kevin M. Patent number: 7145304Abstract: An adaptive feed forward controller inserts signals into control loops of an optical disc player and/or recorder at a frequency of the rotation of the disc and one or more harmonics thereof, while at the same time maintaining the stability of the control loops. This makes the control loops more responsive to harmonic components of eccentric and/or tilt motion of a track being followed, a characteristic of poor quality optical discs. The quality of playback or recording such discs is thereby improved. Signal processing forming the control loops including the adaptive feed forward controller is carried out by a software controlled processor on an integrated circuit chip within the optical disc instrument. A signal representing the frequency of rotation of the disc, which is used in the signal processing, can be derived from the control loop rather than by directly measuring rotation with a transducer in the rotating system.Type: GrantFiled: August 29, 2005Date of Patent: December 5, 2006Assignee: Zoran CorporationInventors: Mario Jodorkovsky, Assaf Margalit, Yehonatan Mandel

Patent number: 7145804Abstract: In a non-volatile memory, the displacement current generated in non-selected word lines that results when the voltage levels on an array's bit lines are changed can result in disturbs. Techniques for reducing these currents are presented. In a first aspect, the number of cells being simultaneously programmed on a word line is reduced. In a non-volatile memory where an array of memory cells is composed of a number of units, and the units are combined into planes that share common word lines, the simultaneous programming of units within the same plane is avoided. Multiple units may be programmed in parallel, but these are arranged to be in separate planes. This is done by selecting the number of units to be programmed in parallel and their order such that all the units programmed together are from distinct planes, by comparing the units to be programmed to see if any are from the same plane, or a combination of these.Type: GrantFiled: September 28, 2005Date of Patent: December 5, 2006Assignee: SanDisk CorporationInventors: Daniel C. Patent number: 7142364Abstract: We theoretically introduce a new type of optical all-pass filter based on guided resonance in coupled photonic crystal slabs. The filter exhibits near-complete transmission for both on- and off-resonant frequencies and yet generates large resonant group delay. We further show that such a filter can be mechanically switched into a flat-top band rejection filter. We also show that a single photonic crystal slab can also function either as optical all-pass transmission or flattop reflection filter for normally incident light. Both filter functions are synthesized by designing the spectral properties of guided resonance in the slab. The structure is extremely compact along the vertical direction.Type: GrantFiled: September 8, 2004Date of Patent: November 28, 2006Assignee: The Board of Trustees of the Leland Stanford Junior UniversityInventors: Wonjoo Suh, Olav Solgaard, Shanhui Fan

Patent number: 7139864Abstract: A non-volatile memory system is organized in physical groups of physical memory locations. Each physical group (metablock) is erasable as a unit and can be used to store a logical group of data. A memory management system allows for update of a logical group of data by allocating a metablock dedicated to recording the update data of the logical group. The update metablock records update data in the order received and has no restriction on whether the recording is in the correct logical order as originally stored (sequential) or not (chaotic). Eventually the update metablock is closed to further recording. One of several processes will take place, but will ultimately end up with a fully filled metablock in the correct order which replaces the original metablock. In the chaotic case, directory data is maintained in the non-volatile memory in a manner that is conducive to frequent updates. The system supports multiple logical groups being updated concurrently.Type: GrantFiled: December 30, 2003Date of Patent: November 21, 2006Assignee: SanDisk CorporationInventors: Alan David Bennett, Alan Douglas Bryce, Sergey Gorobets, Alan Welsh Sinclair, Peter John Smith

Patent number: 7139465Abstract: Non-volatile memory that has non-volatile charge storing capability such as EEPROM and flash EEPROM is programmed by a programming system that applies to a plurality of memory cells in parallel. Enhanced performance is achieved by programming each cell to its target state with a minimum of programming pulses using a data-dependent programming voltage. Further improvement is accomplished by performing the programming operation in multiphase where each successive phase is executed with a finer programming resolution such as employing a programming voltage with a gentler staircase waveform. These features allow rapid and accurate convergence to the target states for the group of memory cells being programmed in parallel, thereby allowing each cell to store several bits of information without sacrificing performance.Type: GrantFiled: May 9, 2005Date of Patent: November 21, 2006Assignee: SanDisk CorporationInventors: Geoffrey Gongwer, Daniel C. Patent number: 7130039Abstract: A compact and versatile multi-spot inspection imaging system employs an objective for focusing an array of radiation beams to a surface and a second reflective or refractive objective having a large numerical aperture for collecting scattered radiation from the array of illuminated spots. The scattered radiation from each illuminated spot is focused to a corresponding optical fiber channel so that information about a scattering may be conveyed to a corresponding detector in a remote detector array for processing. For patterned surface inspection, a cross-shaped filter is rotated along with the surface to reduce the effects of diffraction by Manhattan geometry. A spatial filter in the shape of an annular aperture may also be employed to reduce scattering from patterns such as arrays on the surface. In another embodiment, different portions of the same objective may be used for focusing the illumination beams onto the surface and for collecting the scattered radiation from the illuminated spots simultaneously.Type: GrantFiled: April 17, 2003Date of Patent: October 31, 2006Assignee: KLA-Tencor Technologies CorporationInventors: Mehdi Vaez-Iravani, Lawrence Robert Miller

Patent number: 7120051Abstract: The present invention presents techniques whereby a memory system interrupts a programming process and restarts it including additional data. More specifically, when a memory system programs data into a group of cells together as programming unit, programming can begin with less than the full data content which the group can hold. In one embodiment, the present invention allows overlapped programming of upper and lower data pages, where once the memory begins programming the lower logical data page, if data is received for the upper page assigned to the same physical page, programming is interrupted and recommenced with the concurrent programming of both the upper and the loser pages. In a complimentary embodiment, when a page contains multiple sectors of data, programming of the physical page can begin when one or more, but less than all, of the sectors forming the corresponding logical page have been received, stopped and restarted to include additional sectors of the page.Type: GrantFiled: December 14, 2004Date of Patent: October 10, 2006Assignee: SanDisk CorporationInventors: Sergey Anatolievich Gorobets, Yan Li
