  • Patent number: 7119897
Abstract: A curved mirrored surface is used to collect radiation scattered by a sample surface and originating from a normal illumination beam and an oblique illumination beam. The collected radiation is focused to a detector. Scattered radiation originating from the normal and oblique illumination beams may be distinguished by employing radiation at two different wavelengths, by intentionally introducing an offset between the spots illuminated by the two beams or by switching the normal and oblique illumination beams on and off alternately. Beam position error caused by change in sample height may be corrected by detecting specular reflection of an oblique illumination beam and changing the direction of illumination in response thereto. Butterfly-shaped spatial filters may be used in conjunction with curved mirror radiation collectors to restrict detection to certain azimuthal angles.

  • Patent number: 7116413
Abstract: A compact surface inspection optical head is disclosed which comprises a frame with two rings of apertures therein. The first set of apertures surrounding and close to a normal direction to the surface to be inspected is connected to fibers used to collect scattered radiation useful for the detection of micro-scratches caused by chemical and mechanical polishing. Where the position of these apertures is selected to be away from patterned scattering or diffraction, these apertures and their associated fibers may be useful for anomaly detection on patterned surfaces. A second ring of apertures at low elevation angles to the surface inspected is connected to fibers to collect radiation scattered by the surface inspected for anomaly detection on patterned surfaces.

  • Patent number: 7116155
Abstract: In a non-volatile memory, charge pumps are used to provide high voltages needed for programming memory cells that have floating gate structures. Charge pumps have a series of voltage multiplier stages in series to boost voltage. These charge pumps must rapidly charge a load to a high voltage and then maintain a voltage with a high degree of stability. Techniques for achieving both of these goals are presented. In one aspect, a charge pump has two operating states, one to charge a load rapidly and a second to maintain a voltage on a charged load with high stability. These states are achieved by changing the current output-from a high current during charging to a low current to maintain the voltage. This is done by changing the capacitance used in the individual voltage multiplier stages. In another aspect, two different current levels are produced by changing the voltage used to charge the capacitors of the voltage multiplier stages.

  • Patent number: 7114659
Abstract: A mother/daughter card non-volatile memory system includes a daughter card containing the memory and a mother card containing the memory controller and host interface circuits. The daughter memory card contains as little more than the memory cell array as is practical, in order to minimize its cost, and has an interface for connecting with a variety of mother controller cards having physical attributes and host interfaces according to a number of different published or proprietary memory card standards. Different types of memory cards may be used when the operating parameters of the memory are stored within it in a protected location, the mother card controller then reading these parameters and adapting its operation accordingly. A radio frequency antenna may be included on a surface of the card along with its electrical contacts, in order to provide a radio frequency identification function.

  • Patent number: 7116864
Abstract: We introduce a new all-optical mechanism that can compress the bandwidth of light pulses to absolute zero, and bring them to a complete stop. The mechanism can be realized in a system consisting of a waveguide side-coupled to tunable resonators, which generates a photonic band structure that represents a classical analogue of the Electromagnetically Induced Transparency. The same system can also achieve a time-reversal operation. We demonstrate the operation of such a system by finite-difference time-domain simulations of an implementation in photonic crystals.

  • Patent number: 7117269
Abstract: A content-aware application switch and methods thereof intelligently switch client packets to one server among a group of servers in a server farm. The switch uses Layer 7 or application content parsed from a packet to help select the server and to schedule the transmitting of the packet to the server. This enables refined load-balancing and Quality-of-Service control tailored to the application being switched. In another aspect of the invention, a slow-start server selection method assigned an initially boosted server load metric to a server newly added to the group of servers under load balancing. This alleviates the problem of the new server being swamped initially due to a very low load metric compared to that of others. In yet another aspect of the invention, a switching method dependent on Layer 7 content avoids delayed binding in a new TCP session. Layer 7 content is not available during the initial handshaking phase of a new TCP session.

  • Patent number: 7113432
Abstract: A non-volatile flash memory system counts the occurrences of an event, such as the number of times that individual blocks have been erased and rewritten, by updating a compressed count only once for the occurrence of a large number of such events. Complementary embodiments include updating the compressed count based upon a random number or upon the actual count matching a multiple of the fixed number. These techniques also have application to monitoring other types of recurring events in flash memory systems or in other types of electronic systems. In another aspect of the present invention, provisions are made to maintain an accurate experience count if the memory system experiences an improper shutdown, for example in case of power loss or removal of a memory card.

  • Patent number: 7114071
Abstract: A method and apparatus for adding watermark data to an input signal is provided. For this method watermark data is embedded into the input signal by modulating elements of the input signal to predefined relationships in reference to other elements of the input signal. By using referential relationships and by using patterned sequences, one or more bits of data can robustly be embedded. Further, a method and apparatus for recovering data embedded by the method and apparatus of the present invention, are also provided. To recover the embedded data, differences between elements of the input signal to reference elements of the signal are calculated and checked against predefined relationships. Predefined relationships thus found are used to recover pieces of the embedded information.

  • Patent number: 7110298
Abstract: In a non-volatile memory system, when it is discovered that the voltage pump pulse provided by a charge pump for programming the memory cells does not match a reference voltage, the programming time period of the voltage pump pulse is adjusted to a value that remains substantially unchanged until the end of the programming cycle. In this manner, the fluctuation in the effective programming time period of the programming pulses is prevented for the remainder of the programming cycle so that a broadening of the threshold voltage distribution will not occur or will be reduced. This feature allows a short programming time period to be designated for the programming pulses for enhanced performance, while allowing the flexibility of increased program time period when the charge pump is operating under conditions that causes it to be slow and/or weak.

  • Patent number: 7106440
Abstract: A diffraction grating and a prism with the appropriate characteristics are employed to provide a combined dispersive characteristic that is substantially linear over the visible spectrum. Radiation from the grating and prism is collimated by a lens towards a detector array. The grating or a telecentric stop between the grating and prism is placed at a focal point of the lens in a telecentric arrangement so that equal magnification is achieved at the detector array. If the detector array is replaced by a plurality of optical channels, a multiplexer/demultiplexer is obtained.

  • Patent number: 7106318
Abstract: Two separate power supplies are employed to generate electrical potentials for driving row and column electrodes of LCDs. One or more energy storage devices are preferably used together with the two power supplies for generating such potentials. In the first phase, the energy storage devices are charged and in the second phase, such devices and the power supplies are employed to generate the appropriate potentials for driving the row and column electrodes. Such schemes permit the column electrodes to be driven through a voltage range much smaller than the convention IAPT driving schemes and vastly reduces the power consumption by the driver. The total voltage dynamic range experienced by the driver circuit is comparable to the IAPT driving scheme.

  • Patent number: 7100430
Abstract: A dual stage scanning instrument includes a sensor for sensing a parameter of a sample and coarse and fine stages for causing relative motion between the sensor and the sample. The coarse stage has a resolution of about 1 micrometer and the fine stage has a resolution of 1 nanometer or better. The sensor is used to sense the parameter when both stages cause relative motion between the sensor assembly and the sample. The sensor may be used to sense height variations of the sample surface as well as thermal variations, electrostatic, magnetic, light reflectivity or light transmission parameters at the same time when height variation is sensed. By performing along scan at a coarser resolution and short scans a high resolution using the same probe tip or two probe tips at fixed relative positions, data obtained from the long and short scans can be correlated accurately.

  • Patent number: 7102924
Abstract: Techniques of overcoming a degradation of the apparent charge levels stored in one row of memory cells as a result of subsequently programming an adjacent row of memory cells. After storing the data of the subsequently programmed row elsewhere, the charge levels of its cells are driven to common level. The charge levels of the first row of cells then have a uniform influence from the charge levels of the second row, and, as a result, the chance of successfully reading the data stored in the first row is significantly increased.
