Patent number: 6230576Abstract: A single actuator such as an electric motor is used to actuate a shift range changing mechanism of an automatic transmission. The motor has a plurality of torque generating units each of which is capable of generating a torque sufficient to effect any shift range changes of the shift range changing mechanism. All of the torque generating units are driven electrically normally in response to a shift range change command. Operation of each torque generating unit is monitored separately from each other. When one of the torque generating units fails in operation, the torque generating unit in failure is not driven but the other torque generating units are driven to effect a shift range change. The failure of the torque generating units is indicated on an indicator in a vehicle. The motor may be a brushless type or a reluctance type.Type: GrantFiled: September 27, 1999Date of Patent: May 15, 2001Assignee: Denso CorporationInventors: Yoshichika Yamada, Masashi Hori, Hironori Asa

Patent number: 6232728Abstract: In a discharge lamp apparatus for a vehicle, it is determined that a grounded condition is present when a lamp voltage is less than a predetermined voltage and a lamp current is less than a predetermined current. Electric power supply to the lamp is stopped temporarily in response to the determination of the grounded condition, and then the lighting operation is restarted again. If the grounded condition is determined again, the above operation is repeated. If this repetition continues for a predetermined period, the lighting operation is disabled continuously. In controlling the lamp, a voltage of a battery is boosted by a voltage booster transformer, which is turned on and off by a MOS transistor so that electric power supplied to the lamp is duty-controlled. An upper limit is set to the duty ratio, and the upper limit is increased as the lamp current decreases, so that the lighting characteristics of the lamp is improved.Type: GrantFiled: May 5, 1999Date of Patent: May 15, 2001Assignees: Denso Corporation, Koito Manufacturing Co., Ltd.Inventors: Noboru Yamamoto, Goichi Oda, Tomoyuki Funayama

Patent number: 6230120Abstract: In some call-switching systems, transmitted speech samples may be sent back (back-looping) to the sender from a telephone switching center if the switching center is unable to send the speech samples forward. When supplementary information is sent with the speech sample, back-looping may cause a problem if the sending device interprets the signal as originating from another device. To avoid this problem, transmitted samples are subjected to a check value calucation such as a checksum or a cyclic redundancy check. The check value is stored in memory and any received samples are subjected to a check value calculation and compared to the stored samples. If the comparison yields a match, then the device will know that the received samples originated from itself and can be properly handled.Type: GrantFiled: April 21, 1999Date of Patent: May 8, 2001Assignee: Nokia Communications OyInventor: Jyri Suvanen

Patent number: 6230125Abstract: The present invention relates to processing speech coding parameters in a telecommunication system. The speech coding parameters of a speech frame, produced by a speech encoder, are divided into groups, i.e. so-called virtual channels, in which speech parameter error correction, channel coding and processing of error-free or erroneous speech parameters are performed independently. At the receiving end, the processing (505) of erroneous and error-free speech parameters can thus be controlled independently on each virtual transmission channel (502) according to the quality of each virtual transmission channel. The speech parameters of the high-quality virtual channels of a speech frame can thus be processed as error-free, replacing the speech coding parameters of the low-quality virual channels only. The independently processed (505) speech parameters of the virtual channels are thus reassembled (507) into a speech frame, which is applied to decoding.Type: GrantFiled: January 5, 1998Date of Patent: May 8, 2001Assignee: Nokia Telecommunications OyInventor: Janne Vainio
