  • Patent number: 4728386
Abstract: Apparatus for applying plastic film material to a glass sheet has a first roller mounted for rotation about its longitudinal axis and having a rubber-like surface and a diameter of at least about 30 inches (75 cm). A second roller is mounted for rotation about its longitudinal axis adjacent to the first roller to form a nip between the first and second rollers. A length of plastic film material having adhesive on one surface is supplied under controlled tension to the first roller at a position remote from the second roller, with the opposite surface of the film material in contact with the first roller, to cause the film material to pass around a substantial portion of the circumference of the first roller to a position adjacent the second roller. The glass sheet is fed through the nip to cause the second roller to press the glass sheet towards the first roller and cause the film material to be adhered to the glass sheet.

  • Patent number: 4725444
Abstract: A method of making a bun or like edible product produced from dough includes placing dough in a mold having an outer peripheral wall defining the outer periphery of a bun to be baked, a flat bottom wall extending inwardly from the outer peripheral wall, and an upstanding recess-forming member surrounded by the bottom wall. The recess-forming member has an inner peripheral wall extending upwardly from the bottom wall and a top extending across the top of the inner peripheral wall. The dough is baked in the mold to form a bun having a flat bottom surface with a recess, and the bun is then cut across a horizontal plane above the recess to provide an upper part and a lower part, the lower part is turned upside-down to position the recessed surface uppermost, edible filling material is placed in the recess, and the upper part is placed on the upside-down lower part to form a filled bun.

  • Patent number: 4717540
Abstract: A rotatable device is suspended in a melt of zinc and the device is rotated to draw a vortex in the melt. The device comprises a hollow cylinder having an open top and a closed bottom. An array of openings in the cylinder side wall is adapted to allow zinc melt to pass through. Nickel is added in particulate form into the vortex in the device. The openings in the cylindrical wall are adapted to retain the nickel particulates in the device to be washed with molten zinc until the particulates are substantially dissolved. The temperature is kept at a minimal value, i.e., no superheat is required to dissolve the nickel homogeneously throughout the zinc melt. After the nickel is dissolved, the nickel-zinc melt is solidified in zinc slabs. The zinc slabs containing nickel have narrow standard deviations from their specification.

  • Patent number: 4715939
Abstract: Monovalent ions, especially chloride and fluoride, but also thallium, sodium and potassium are efficiently removed from ZnSO.sub.4 electrolyte by electrodialysis. Monovalent anions are removed using alternating monovalent anion permselective membranes and cation exchange membranes. Monovalent anions and cations are removed using alternating monovalent anion and monovalent cation permselective membranes. Electrodialysis is carried out under turbulent conditions, at up to 60.degree. C., a differential membrane pressure of less than 150 kPa, a current density of 10 to 500 A/m.sup.2, and a pH of less than 5.5. Where both chloride and fluoride are removed a pH of 3.5 to 5.5 is maintained.

  • Patent number: 4709148
Abstract: A quadrupole mass spectrometer has a housing containing pole rods which define a passage through which ions can pass when the housing is evacuated. RF voltage is supplied to the pole rods to cause ions only of a predetermined mass/charge ratio to pass through the passage. Such ions are detected and their rate of receipt is inducted. The temperature of the RF supply is controlled to enable more consistent analytical results to be attained.

  • Patent number: 4697815
Abstract: A dart has a cavity extending rearwardly from a front end of the main body for a predetermined distance to an end wall, and a point assembly comprises a collar detachably securable to the front end of the main body, the collar having an axially-extending aperture extending therethrough, and a point comprising an elongated shaft with a pointed front end, the shaft extending through the collar and having a forwardly tapering portion at least in the region of the collar. The forwardly tapering shaft portion engages a rear end of the collar in a forward position of the point relative to the body to limit forward movement of the point relative to the body and permitting the body and collar to move forwardly relative to the point, when the point hits the target, to cause the cavity end wall to engage a rear end of the point shaft and drive the pointed front end into the target and to permit rotation of the body relative to the point about its longitudinal axis.

  • Patent number: 4697960
Abstract: A method and apparatus for anchoring rock bolts and cables in drill holes is disclosed. The method of the invention comprises mixing a dry aggregate-cement mixture with a limited, predetermined amount of water in a water fitting and blowing the wetted cementitious mixture through a delivery tube into a drill hole, in which an anchor cable or rock bolt has been inserted, resulting in the cable or bolt becoming permanently anchored in the drill hole. The use of a wetted dry cementitious mixture eliminates leakage of mixture from the drill hole and obviates the use of a plug, cover or collar plate. The equipement includes a pressurized, dry mix delivery vessel, a source of pressurized air, a water fitting for wetting dry mix with water and a delivery tube for delivery of the wetted dry mix into the drill hole.

  • Patent number: 4690725
Abstract: Cd and Te are purified by multiple-pass zone refining in the presence of a small amount of an added gettering substance chosen from Cd, Te and CdTe. In the purification of Cd, Te, or CdTe is added, the amount of Te or of Te in CdTe being less than the amount of Te in the Cd-rich eutectic composition between Cd and Te. In the purification of Te, Cd or CdTe is added, the amount of Cd or of Cd in CdTe being less than the amount of Cd in the Te-rich eutectic composition between Cd and Te. The Cd and Te so purified have an improved purity as witnessed by SSMS analyses, the increased ductility of the Cd and a much higher yield of the number of slices of CdHgTe produced with the refined Cd and Te meeting the specifications for carrier concentration and mobility.

  • Patent number: 4689352
Abstract: A process for the production of plastic foam material includes forming a liquid mixture by mixing an unsaturated resin, a catalyst operable to cause curing of the unsaturated resin, a promoter operable to activate the catalyst, a gas-releasing salt, and an acid operable to cause the release of gas from the salt so that the liquid mixture foams and cures by gelling and subsequent hardening. Included in the mixture is a volatile liquid gas-release control agent which volatilizes during curing to maintain gas release passages open in the foam and thereby permit release of gases from the foam during hardening after gellation at least until the foam is structurally stable.

Abstract: An air suspension system for tandem axles vehicles includes a pair of inboard, laterally-spaced air springs disposed within or below the vehicle frame each in communication with a separate reservoir compartment. The air springs are connected to a transverse tubular cross member at their upper ends, which may function as to the air reservoir compartments and are seated on the interior ends of transverse levers, each lever articulating on a floating walking beam. Each floating transverse lever may be pivotally connected at its outer end to the lower end of an outrigger bracket which is mounted at its upper end on the frame of the vehicle. A rubber spring preferably is interposed between the outer end of the transverse lever and the outrigger bracket.Upper torque rods interconnect the tandem axles and the vehicle frame, while lower torque rods interconnect the frame support bracket and the tandem axles.
