  • Patent number: 8335203
Abstract: Embodiments include systems and methods for allocating time to a plurality of devices in the network of a piconet controller. Embodiments comprise selectively directing a steerable antenna beam of the piconet controller to a plurality of devices in succession during a polling process to receive time allocation requests from one or more of the devices. Subsequent to the polling process, a grant procedure is performed wherein a device is granted permission to transmit in a subsequent time interval. Also during the grant process, one or more devices are instructed to receive from the device granted permission to transmit. The polling process and the grant process occur in the same superframe.

  • Patent number: 8335198
Abstract: Apparatuses, systems, and methods for transmitting data frames over data networks with varying Interframe Space (IFS) times are disclosed. A system embodiment may comprise a mobile computing device with an integrated wireless networking card. The card may receive a transmission of several data frames. While receiving the several data frames, the networking card may determine that a response will need to be transmitted back to the sending station after the sending station sends the last frame of data. After a short period of delay following the end of the last transmitted frame the card may immediately begin transmitting a preamble of the response, while still demodulating and processing data of the transmitted frames. Upon finishing data processing of the remaining frames, the card may generate the content for the rest of the response, such as a block acknowledgment.

  • Patent number: 8335279
Abstract: Apparatuses, systems, and methods that align channel filters for dual tuners are disclosed. An embodiment may comprise an IC having two tuners. Each tuner may have a low-noise amplifier, a mixer with a local oscillator, and channel filter. To perform a channel filter alignment, a bandwidth controller may cross-couple the local oscillator of each tuner to the input of the mixer of the opposite tuner. The bandwidth controller may adjust the frequencies of the local oscillators to produce different configuration tone frequencies at the outputs of the mixers, which are inputs to the channel filters. The bandwidth controller may then determine an amplitude difference between two separate measurements of a channel filter output and, based on a comparison of the measurements with predicted values, increment or decrement the filter bandwidth for each tuner and store parameters for the channel filters which create the largest signal amplitudes.

  • Patent number: 8327448
Abstract: Methods and arrangements to persist a trusted time for a protected clock based upon a non-trusted but persistent time source are disclosed. Embodiments may comprise an embedded device, which may be hardware, software, firmware, and/or other logic, to maintain a trusted time in a protected clock. The embedded device may initialize the protected clock by obtaining a trusted time from a trusted time source such as a network server. The embedded device then maintains the trusted time in the event of a power loss to the protected clock by monitoring a time differential between the protected clock and a non-trusted system clock. Many embodiments also employ the protected clock without a battery backup to advantageously save manufacturing costs and space, while maintaining the trusted time in the event of a power loss by relying on a battery backup for the non-trusted system clock. Other embodiments are disclosed and claimed.

  • Patent number: 8315154
Abstract: Apparatuses, systems, and methods that reduce the amount of time for recovering multiple beam-formed links in a wireless network are disclosed. An embodiment may, e.g., be a mobile computing device with wireless beamforming communications capabilities. Upon establishing links with multiple stations, the mobile computing device may sense that the link quality or strength is degrading for several of the links. The laptop may transmit a single forward-transmission sector sweep (FWD-TXSS) to initiate recovery of the links. The other stations previously linked to the laptop may detect the degradation the links and start monitoring for the single FWD-TXSS. The receiving devices may each perform reverse-transmission sector sweeps (REV-TXSS), in sequence, to reestablish beam-formed links with the laptop without requiring multiple forward-transmission sector sweeps.

  • Patent number: 8204156
Abstract: Apparatuses, systems, and methods that employ conditional probabilities to calculate phase errors are disclosed. For a received signal, the embodiments may develop several phase error estimates relative to each point of a constellation, the number and location of points of the constellation depending on the modulation technique of the received signal. In addition to calculating the phase error estimates, the embodiments may also calculate weights, or probabilities, associated with each of the estimates. The embodiments may use the estimates and the weights to calculate a composite phase error estimate. The composite phase error estimate may be used to correct the received signal and eliminate or reduce the impact of the phase error.

  • Patent number: 8200888
Abstract: Methods and apparatuses for delaying execution of input/output (I/O) requests for solid state drives are contemplated. Some embodiments comprise receiving I/O requests for a solid state drive and calculating amounts of time based on characteristics of the requests, such as differences of the logical block addresses (LBAs) of the requests. The embodiments may then delay responses by the solid state drive for the requests. Calculating the amounts of time and delaying the responses by the amounts of time may allow the solid state drives to emulate the responses of various types of hard disk drives. Some embodiments comprise an apparatus for delaying execution of the I/O requests for solid state drives. The apparatuses may have numerous modules, such as a request receiver to receive the I/O requests, a calculation module to calculate the amounts of delay times, and a delay module to delay the responses of the I/O requests.

  • Patent number: 8152995
Abstract: Hot water pipes, in areas with hard water, tend to fill with scale until they no longer pass enough water. De-scaling water pipes with acid is dangerous, expensive and damages the pipes. Ion exchange and reverse osmosis water softeners eliminate scale buildup in pipes, but are expensive. Embodiments of this invention provide a means of keeping an amount of the scale precipitate, created when water is heated, inside a housing by passing the hot water through a removal medium where the scale sticks to the surface. The removal medium can be placed inside the water heater or in a separate housing connected to the water heater; both configurations remove the precipitate from hot water; both save hot water pipes from scale accumulation.
