  • Patent number: 8275092
Abstract: Methods for a tangible image of an inspected object. An object is illuminated with at least two sources of penetrating radiation that generate respective pencil beams and define respective viewing points and view planes. Post-interaction penetrating radiation due to the respective sources is used to generate signals based on respective views of the inspected object, and thus derive information with respect to a dimension transverse to the first view plane based on the second signal. A tangible image of the inspected object is then displayed depicting information with respect at least to the first view plane and the transverse dimension.

  • Patent number: 8269779
Abstract: Computer-implemented methods and computer program products for automatically transferring expressions between rigs with consistent joint structure, and for automatically transferring skin weights between different skin meshes based on joint positioning. A method is provided for transferring an expression between a plurality of source rigs and a target rig, where each rig characterizes an animated character, and each rig, in turn, is characterized by a set of joints and a skin mesh having a plurality of vertices, with each vertex characterized by a matrix of weights relating a response of the vertex to movement of associated joints. A set of offsets is calculated of joint positions of a goal expression of each source rig relative to a neutral expression of the source rig. A scaling transformation is then applied to the set of offsets to produce a scaled set of offsets, which are added, in turn, to a neutral expression of the target rig.

  • Patent number: 8270568
Abstract: During treatment by brachytherapy, radiation passes beyond the target volume and delivers radiation dose to adjacent tissue such as the lungs and, especially in the case of treatment of the left breast, to the heart. The heart is particularly vulnerable to radiation; to minimise the dose it receives in such circumstances, we propose an apparatus for treatment by brachytherapy comprising an X-ray source sized for insertion into a patient, a respiration state monitor, and a control apparatus adapted to receive respiration state information from the respiration state monitor and control the output of the X-ray source; the control apparatus being arranged to operate the X-ray source at a first output level when the respiration state monitor indicates a degree of lung inflation above a first preset threshold and operate the X-ray source at a second and lower output level when the respiration state monitor indicates a degree of lung inflation below a second preset threshold.

  • Patent number: 8265747
Abstract: A method and apparatus for diagnosing and treating neural dysfunction is disclosed. This device has the capability of delivering the therapeutic electrical energy to more than one treatment electrode simultaneously. In another exemplary embodiment, this device can perform EMG testing both before and after the therapeutic energy has been delivered, to assess whether the target nerve was successfully treated. In another embodiment, the device has the capability to record and store sensory stimulation thresholds both before and after treatment is described, which allows the clinician to accurately determine whether the target nerve has been desensitized. Energy control may achieved by simultaneously comparing the tip temperature of each treatment electrode to a set temperature selected by the operator, and regulating the therapeutic energy output to maintain the set temperature.

  • Patent number: 8265730
Abstract: Methods are disclosed for assessing the condition of a cartilage in a joint, particularly a human knee. The methods include converting an image such as an MRI to a three dimensional map of the cartilage. The cartilage map can be correlated to a movement pattern of the joint to assess the affect of movement on cartilage wear. Changes in the thickness of cartilage over time can be determined so that therapies can be provided. Information on thickness of cartilage and curvature of cartilage or subchondral bone can be used to plan therapy. Information on movement pattern can be used to plan therapy.

  • Patent number: 8241931
Abstract: A method of producing a MEMS device provides a first substrate having a first interior surface and thickness, and a second substrate having a second interior surface. The method also forms at least one closed wall on at least one of the first and second substrates, weakens the first substrate in a plane generally parallel to the first interior surface, and secures the first substrate to the second substrate. The at least one closed wall extends between the first interior surface and the second interior surface. The method further separates a portion of the first substrate along the plane generally parallel to the first interior surface after securing the first and second substrates, and removes an excess portion of the first substrate to produce a reduced thickness first substrate of no greater than about 20 microns.

  • Patent number: 8238574
Abstract: The invention provides a computer-implemented method for determining a time delay for time delay compensation of a microphone signal from a microphone array in a beamformer arrangement. For a given time, an instantaneous estimate of a position of a wanted sound source and/or of a direction of arrival of a signal originating from the wanted sound source is determined. The computer system then determines whether the instantaneous estimate deviates from a preset estimate of a position of the wanted sound source and/or of a direction of arrival of a signal originating from the wanted sound source according to a predetermined criterion. The predetermined criterion comprises a check whether the instantaneous estimate deviates from the preset estimate by at least a predetermined deviation threshold.

  • Patent number: 8237296
Abstract: Organic anti-stiction coatings such as, for example, hydrocarbon and fluorocarbon based self-assembled organosilanes and siloxanes applied either in solvent or via chemical vapor deposition, are selectively etched using a UV-Ozone (UVO) dry etching technique in which the portions of the organic anti-stiction coating to be etched are exposed simultaneously to multiple wavelengths of ultraviolet light that excite and dissociate organic molecules from the anti-stiction coating and generate atomic oxygen from molecular oxygen and ozone so that the organic molecules react with atomic oxygen to form volatile products that are dissipated, resulting in removal of the exposed portions of the anti-stiction coating. A hybrid etching process using heat followed by UVO exposure may be used. A shadow mask (e.g., of glass or quartz), a protective material layer, or other mechanism may be used to selective expose the portions of the anti-stiction coating to be UVO etched.

  • Patent number: 8239566
Abstract: Processing transaction requests in a shared memory multi-processor computer network is described. A transaction request is received at a servicing agent from a requesting agent. The transaction request includes a request priority associated with a transaction urgency generated by the requesting agent. The servicing agent provides an assigned priority to the transaction request based on the request priority, and then compares the assigned priority to an existing service level at the servicing agent to determine whether to complete or reject the transaction request. A reply message from the servicing agent to the requesting agent is generated to indicate whether the transaction request was completed or rejected, and to provide reply fairness state data for rejected transaction requests.
