  • Patent number: 8235221
Abstract: Liquid filter assemblies including an upper sample reservoir, a sample filter and a lower storage bottle are supported by a vacuum base. The base has a vacuum inlet port and, for connection to the liquid filter assembly, a vacuum outlet port. A vacuum is provided through the base to below the sample filter to draw sample liquid through the sample filter into the storage bottle. The base may include an auxiliary vacuum outlet port for connection with additional devices. The bases may be connected from one to another through auxiliary vacuum outlets and the vacuum inlets to make a chain of liquid filter assemblies supplied from one vacuum source. Alternatively, one base may include multiple vacuum outlet ports so that it may support and supply vacuum to a plurality of liquid filter assemblies.

  • Patent number: 8238575
Abstract: Embodiments of the invention disclose computer-implemented methods, systems, and computer program products for estimating signal coherence. First, a sound generated by a sound source is detected by a first microphone to obtain a first microphone signal and by a second microphone to obtain a second microphone signal. The first microphone signal is filtered by a first adaptive finite impulse response filter to obtain a first filtered signal. The second microphone signal is filtered by a second adaptive finite impulse response filter, to obtain a second filtered signal. The coherence of the first filtered signal and the second filtered signal is determined based upon the filtered signals.

  • Patent number: 8239160
Abstract: A method of detecting activity in a MEMS accelerometer captures an acceleration bias, measures acceleration at a predetermined time, calculates a change in acceleration using the measured acceleration and the acceleration bias, and compares the change in acceleration to a threshold to detect activity. A method of detecting inactivity uses a similar technique along with a timer. The method of detecting inactivity in a MEMS accelerometer captures an acceleration bias, measures acceleration at a predetermined time, calculates a change in acceleration using the measured acceleration and the acceleration bias, and compares the change in acceleration to a threshold to detect inactivity. The method further determines if the change in acceleration is less than the threshold and, if so, determines if a predetermined period of time has elapsed to detect inactivity.

  • Patent number: 8239203
Abstract: Adjusting confidence score thresholds is described for a speech recognition engine. The speech recognition engine is implemented in multiple computer processes functioning in a computer processor, and is characterized by an associated receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. A results confirmation process interprets user confirmation of speech recognition results within a given confidence score threshold to create a confirmed portion of the ROC curve for the speech recognition engine. A curve extension process extends the confirmed portion of the ROC curve by extrapolation of unconfirmed speech recognition results beyond the confidence score threshold to generate an extended ROC curve. A threshold adjustment process adjusts the confidence score threshold based on the extended ROC curve to meet target operating constraints for operating the speech recognition engine to perform automatic speech recognition of user speech inputs.

  • Patent number: 8233044
Abstract: A method for demultiplexing time-division multiplexed digital video data which originates from multiple sources. The video data is not indexed nor identified to the sources. A first set of digital video data representative of a first image is identified as representative video data of the first source. A second set of digital video data representative of a current image is then retrieved. A difference ratio is calculated using the representative digital video data and the current set of digital video data. If the difference ratio is above a threshold, a display query is prompted to a user to indicate the source. If the response is indicative with a new source, the current set of digital video data is stored to a second memory location associated with the second source and identified as a representative of the second source.

  • Patent number: 8231108
Abstract: A lifter of furniture and other loads has a wheel-mounted base comprising a plurality of radially extending beams and a transversely mounted, planar support structure. One of the beams lies within the plane defined by the support structure. The support structure has a bracket extending transversely away from the floor surface and adapted to accept a telescoping support in a sliding fit. • Patent number: 8225536
Abstract: A removable cleat for footwear. The cleat includes a disc with opposing faces. A shoe coupling element is attached to one face of the disc. The other disc face supports a cushioning layer. Traction elements are supported by the cushioning layer. When a user steps on a surface wearing a shoe outfitted with these cleats, the resilience of the cushioning layer at once both lessens the impact of the traction elements on the ground surface and lessens the reaction force on the user's foot transmitted through the shoe's outsole. The user's comfort is thereby enhanced.

  • Patent number: 8228378
Abstract: An apparatus and method for preparing a composite image from a video data stream and for identifying changed features in two composite images. Frames from the video data stream are transformed to a projected 2D image, aligned with adjacent frames and overlapping areas are averaged to provide a higher apparent resolution. The composite image can be stored in real-time. As a second composite image is prepared of the same location at a later time, portions of the second image can be compared to corresponding portions of the stored image after the intensities of the images are equalized. Image areas whose absolute difference exceeds a threshold are again intensity equalized. Areas that are again above threshold can be flagged for further scrutiny, either by a human or by a machine that performs object recognition. In this way, composite video images of a scene can be prepared and compared in real-time.

  • Patent number: 8224877
Abstract: A hardware-based file system includes multiple linked sub-modules that perform functions ancillary to client data handling. Each sub-module is associated with a metadata cache. A doubly-rooted structure is used to store each file system object at successive checkpoints. Metadata is stored within an object and/or as a separate object. Provisions are made for allocating sparse objects. A delayed write feature is used for writing certain objects into non-volatile storage. Checkpoints can be retained as read-only versions of the file system. Modifications to the file system are accomplished without affecting the contents of retained checkpoints. The file system can be reverted to a retained checkpoint. Multiple file servers can be interconnected as a cluster, and each file server stores requests from another file server. Interconnections between file servers can be dynamically modified. A distributed locking mechanism is used to control access to file system objects stored by the file servers.

  • Patent number: 8223981
Abstract: A microphone system has an output and at least a first transducer with a first dynamic range, a second transducer with a second dynamic range different than the first dynamic range, and coupling system to selectively couple the output of one of the first transducer or the second transducer to the system output, depending on the magnitude of the input sound signal, to produce a system with a dynamic range greater than the dynamic range of either individual transducer. A method of operating a microphone system includes detecting whether a transducer output crosses a threshold, and if so then selectively coupling another transducer's output to the system output. The threshold may change as a function of which transducer is coupled to the system output. The system and methods may also combine the outputs of more than one transducer in a weighted sum during transition from one transducer output to another, as a function of time or as a function of the amplitude of the incident audio signal.

  • Patent number: 8225135
Abstract: Methods and apparatus automatically identify certain types of data storage system problems, such as a flawed storage device or an incompatibility between a data storage system and a data storage device or an incompatibility between the storage system and a user computer. The existence of such a problem may be highlighted to a user through an indicator on the storage system and/or through a “dashboard” application being executed by the user computer, and the problem may be automatically corrected by automatically downloading a fix (e.g., new firmware or a “patch”) from a server (e.g., a server managed by the storage device manufacturer, a server managed by the storage system manufacturer and/or a server managed by a third party) and automatically implementing the fix.

  • Patent number: 8215151
Abstract: A MEMS stiction testing method applies a first electrical signal to a MEMS device having two opposing surfaces to cause the two opposing surfaces to make physical contact. The two opposing surfaces produce a second electrical signal when in physical contact. The method then substantially mitigates the first electrical signal after detecting that the second electrical signal has reached a prescribed maximum value.
